Maran1983, don't pull out all their funds, just invest some. I learned about Treasury Bills on Nairaland Business section. I think helovesme is in Investment/Finance so maybe she can give advice on diverse portfolios in general. But yeah, 1% on Savings account is just annoying and that's what most banks offer.

My mum bought shares for me while in secondary school or so under the then Afribank and Union bank.....But she never got paid any dividends. Now I want to get the shares and dividends. How do I go about it. ....where do I start?

First of all, you need the share certificate or the certificate number.
Then contact brokers or what ya man call it.

You canveven contact the customer service of the teo bodies n take it up from there.

They will either link you to the guys or give u their contact.

Onegai, thank you for starting up this very educating and interesting topic.

My kids all have accounts in my bank, but with what I have read here, I think I'll pull all their funds out of the bank and save with ARM pensions since they are already my PFAs.

I was only last week introduced to Bonds but now I'm reading T bills are better.

I will definitely be talking to an investment broker after the holiday.

Thanks to contem, helovesme and co.

Onegai, concerning the other issue, I blocked him like I said I would. Counted my losses and moved on. My sister just sent me some books, so all is well.

I still think bonds is better sha.
U dont get to touch the money for d time specified

Tbills is tempting and the interest is always paid upfront.

Can you not roll it over? If the minimum is N100,000, please how much are bonds? ARM says it does minimums of N5000 on the pdf I saw. So it seems like a more accessible option.

The rates change with each auction. You have to check with bank on that session's rate. I was offered 8.5% and I didn't buy and the next session was 14%. I don't know the minimum for your bank, you have to ask them.

I'm glad we're having this conversation here. I'm really learning a lot and that's the beauty of a forum: everyone may be a mother, but they are also bankers, doctors and engineers and lawyers as well. And it's very upsetting to see young people on NL wailing about how broke or desperate they are, when their parents could have (with the right info) started them on their lives a bit easier. And the most important fact, we as women tend to leave these decisions to our men when we may have a knack for it. God forbid something happens to your husband, he leaves the family money to his uncle or brother to administer on your children's behalf. Because he has never seen you show interest in big financial matters, he assumes you need someone to take care of you when he's gone. And we know sometimes how that story ends...

It is weekly or every fortnight. It depends on CBN selling to the banks and the banks have to sell to their customers. So the bank will be acting as brokers. I'm not a Econs person so I don't know too much about the details.

Sorry for late response, Saturday things. Different insurance company have different plan in their policies. Like Royal Exchange, you can buy any of their policy for your children, the minimum years are 5&6. Going further in the years depend on your age. If you like you can sign for 21years and if you think the years are too much u can get for 5 years, after maturity you can re-save the money again by buying another policy.

These are the plans they have under Prudential Life (1). Heritage plan: minimum of 7k monthly or higher if u can afford it. The minimum year is 5.

(2). Investment plan: minimum of 6 years based on any amount you can afford and you can have access to it every 2 years.

(3) Edu-secure: minimum of 5 years, contribution is based on how much you can afford. You can extend the years if you wish.

There are other plans but these 3 are the main children educational savings account. All the policies have compensation in case anything happen to the policyholder. Certain amount is paid to the beneficiary even if the policyholder has not made full payment before the unforeseen happened.

All the policies above can be logged on to for our personal savings too.

To buttress what onegai and iomoge2 have said, do the following:-
a. get to the registrars of these companies, (view from this link https://www.nairaland.com/2273567/list-nigeria-registrars-addresses-updated), you might need to show them a form of ID/ birth certificate which bears your maiden name( believing your surname is changed). Your share certificates, bonuses and dividends would be there,

b. you can pick them up and open an account with an investment house so your share certificates and bonus certificates can be decentralized.

c. whatever investment house you use, ensure it is credible. You will be given a CSCS No and Clearing House No (CHN), you can take back to these registrars which you have shares with so they can input into their database , this makes you get your bonuses(e-bonus) straight to your CSCS account no instead of share certificates.

d. for your dividends, ensure it is revalidated, so you can pay into your current account or ur CHN with your investment house and use to purchase shares.

Hope this helps

On treasury bill the auction is every fortnight and tenure are 90, 180,364 days from primary markets. The interest rate varies, depends on d duration. There is another one coming on Wednesday, oct 5th. You can read more on investment section of nairaland

I am sorry I came late for the party. As regards investment for our children, different things must be considered and we should try as much as possible to diversify.

Have a savings account, an insurance policy, bonds, treasury Bill and mutual fund. All are very easy but information is very important.

I learnt about treasury bills, bonds and mutual fund on nairaland. As for savings account different banks with different policy. My son has an account with first bank and the requirements is pretty straightforward.

There are different kinds of insurance policy one can take up and depending on what the company offers. Why I prefer an insurance policy to a savings account is because it has a life cover for dependent /next of kin and the process for damage to be paid is quite easy and also the money can't be withdrawn till maturity except you want to end the policy.

I will be using African Alliance children education plan (it doesn't have to be used for their education) the minimum you can start with is #6,000. Let me quote a post I made on it sometimes back
Rhukie:
my analysis will be based on African Alliance Children Education Policy. Unlike banks saving which you can withdraw from at anytime, you can't withdraw from the insurance policy account because it is meant to save towards secondary or tertiary education. Also it provides regular income for the dependent in case of permanent disability or death (which no one prepares for but life xan happen to anyone.)

You can have a policy of between 10-25 year range but not less than that. An a bonus of 3% per annum will be paid on the sum assured unlike the banks where the interest is based on what is saved. That means if you intend to save 6,000,000 in period of 10yrs you'll be getting 180,000 annually for the 10yrs as bonus.

if death or total disability occurs (God Forbid) before maturity lets assume maturity is 10yrs, the family will be paid 2% of the sum assured monthly till the maturity date of the policy. and all outstanding premium to maturity date will be paid by the company.

Also, the policy can be transferred to another named child and you can withdraw if you are not satisfied but you must have paid 2yrs complete premium.

what i have come to realise is nobody taught us financial intelligence, except for a lucky few and that is why we are always confused and also make wrong decisions when it comes to money.

Thank God for a place like nairaland and people like Arese and Nimi who have taken it upon themselves to teach people how to manage their finances no matter how much you earn.

Yall be careful with what you give your babies. You need to talk to your doctor and get supervision. Moringa powder can cause a baby to poop a lot. If you cook it, it will loose most of those listed nutrients. to put it in a childs food you need to make sure it's picked ,dried and packed neatly in hygenic condition.A lot of these packaging companies dont aPply strict hygine when they pack stuff. I have bought morringa powder that had pepper in it(they prolly use the same machine to grind pepper and other spices they package and sell). Abeg if you are not sOo poor get age appropriate infant formular(BFing is best) buy bannana, apples irish or sweet potato, green peas, rice powder, cerelac etc.
Your baby does not need to be FAT. A healthy well balanced meal may not make a child fat but works internally to help boost immunity and establish proper growth not "FAT"

Mash banana add some cerelac lighten with cool boiled water and feed baby. Mash boiled irish potato mash in boiled egg yolk(6mos baby add egg yolk) add milk and feed baby.cook and Peel green peas(I remove peels cos it causes my baby to have purge) mash and feed baby. Peel, remove seed boil mash(I have a small blender I use only for my baby,s food as it makes it smooth my baby hates lumps in her food) and feed baby apples (not sour ones) with some milk. You can grind rice into smooth powder and cook like tuwo make it light though so baby can drink it when its ready and cool add formular(milk) or Br-east milk and feed baby.
It is not easy to feed a child balanced meal as mom has to be in the kitchen and take time to make the food but the reward is that baby gets to eat unique and nice meals. Some kids just don't like to eat. I had to give my baby multivite syrup to make her eat. When all fails I just give her what ever food she favoured and after a while I try all over again to introduce new menu.
can I add it to friso gold? I mean the mashed orishirishi.

Please check my notes under each question.
Please always allow your baby to empty one breast before switching to the other one. Since you'll be returning to work soon I'll suggest you pump after breastfeeding d baby. This will also help your supply. Always empty your breast that is the surest way to know you are getting the hind milk.
Please, don't use hot water to warm your breast milk as it destroys the nutrients in it. Use warm water and shake at interval. While expressing you can use warm towel to massage your breast, this helps too. Take lots of water and please, hygiene is of upmost importance.

All should Note the boldened.

DO NOT SHAKE BREAST MILK.

Shaking breaks down some of the amino acid chains in the constitution of breast milk.

Just swirl it gently to re-incoporate the fatty bits that may have seperated.

Treasury bills is not the same as a bank account.

In lay terms, treasury bills is basically keeping your money with the government for certain number of days and then having your money+interest returned back to you after the agreed period.

Once you decide on how much you want to invest and the duration, all you have to fill all the necessary forms. If your bid is successful (your bank bids on your behalf), your account is then debited. Depending on your choice, you can either have the interest paid upfront at the commencement of the investment or at the expiration.

Yes, the rate differs with banks as some banks are more generous than others.

I think fidelity bank is one of the more generous ones but you can check with your bank and find out their rates. those willing to commit their funds for longer (for example, 365 days) tend to have slightly higher interest rate.

Speak to your account officer (if you have one) or the customer service rep at your local branch and they should be able to explain all the steps involved to you.

Hi,

See previous post to a similar question quoted at the bottom of the page, Other coments in red withing your post below.

Adeime:
Hello mamas pls i need ur input as I am due to resume to work soon and I'd have to start exoressing breast milk for my LO. Kindly help with the following question
1.Can I use other tightlt sealed plastic containers to store the milk or must it be specifically labeled milk storage containers.

you can use any container that provides a tight seal, and is small enough that you can store individual feeds, so it can be one container per feed.

If you have advent bottles, you can get a sealing cap that fits into the hole where the teat is. And the bottle can be put in the freezer..
Most feeding bottles are designed to be frozen, so i am sure most brands will also have their version of sealing caps. This limits the handling of the milk as you can simply pop the bottle in hot water, remove the sealimg cap and npop on the teat to feed baby.

2.mamas that use creche do you go with the frozen milk and let them thaw it themselves or you thaw before leaving the house,I have those feeding bottle warmers do I put the frozen milk there or warm

BM melts pretty quickly... see timescale guidance below. Only defrost when needed. And DO NOT RE-FREEZE after thawing.

3.Is it advisable to express d night or day before for the next day use or

You can express whenever you get a chance,
A little guidance on timescales: BM can stay upto 3 months if frozen, 3 days in the fridge, or 6 hrs at room temperature . Fridge and freezer times are based on there being constant light and constant temperatures can be maintained.

4.A mama mentioned about hind milk and baby's poop.please advise on this as well

If you are expressing from a very engorged breast, the difference is more visible especially if you are using a small bottle. The first batch lighter than the second so if you are using a small bottle to pump into you may have to mix your first and second batches. If you are using a bigger bottle, you may not have this issue.

Please also share any other useful information .
Many thanks all for always being there

AlphaHandMaiden:

The freezer is your friend. Use it.
Also try and get a good insulated cooling bag ( or two) and some gel ice packs ( the blue type). I have the medela storage bag and ice pack set... (you can get from amazon)

You can freeze some of the bottles directly check with the products you have if that is possible. I use the medela pump and bottles which come with a cover, i also have some inherited avent bottles and i just bought the sealing caps for them and these go into the freezer for emergency days!

If you freeze some of the expressed milk and also the ice packs and wack them all in the cooling bag it keeps cool for a very long time. I have had 6 hrs use with this on a day out and the frozen milk was still mostly frozen, and the refrigirated milk still very cold. Enough that i could still return them back to the fridge / freezer.

I have also tried a very basic approach of using 2 cooling bags, one inside the other with ice in a freezer bag. And this kept the milk a decent temperature overnight for my one attempt at a night bottle feed.

If the creche has a fridge, ask them to pop the cooling bags in the fridge. And then they can warm up the bottles as required in hot water. Take the sealing caps off and pop on the teats and they are good to go.

At the end of the day, you pick up all the empties and left overs and review what can go back into the fridge for the next day's use or thrown out. . ( Just so you know the quality of the milk they give your child. As you may be tempted to leave the unused milk at the creche, but you cany really vouch for how they have been stored during the day.)

Other tips: also allow for at least 2 or more teats, prepacked and sterelised in your kit as well.

try labelling the bottles, especially if you re-use the stash from the day before so the creche staff can use the old ones first.

You should also try to express at work if you have a private office/ space you can use and a fridge/ freezer you can store them in. Just use the same storage process to get the milk home. As it will be nigh on imposible to express all your baby needs at night when you get home. Plus your boobs will be hard as rocks and straining to burst out of your clothes if you do.

Final tip: DO NOT USE A HAND PUMP FOR THIS!!!.... except you have hands of steel..... invest in an electric pump! They use both mains and batteries. However beware electricity fluctuations so if you are in naija it may be safer to invest in a few duracells or energizers, with an extra set always on hands.

Hope this helps

Re: NEW BORN BABIES! Are U A New Mum? Then Lets Discuss Babies Here!!!!! by helovesme(f): 2:37pm On Oct 02, 2016
I want to add that with every investment, please read the legal pack (if there's one) and thoroughly understand the terms and conditions.

If you are not clear, ask as many questions as possible from the company's representative(s) and obtain clear answers to all your questions before you commit your funds. Do not feel intimidated whether it's 100k or 100m that you are investing. Its your money and you have every right to ask as many questions as possible before you commit.

Find out what deductable charges are applicable to the investment. Find out what the investment managers deduct as management fees. Find out what taxes are deducted (eg. Withholding tax). Find out what their interest rate is (is it fixed or variable). Ask for an illustrative guide to put your investment in context (that is, if I invest 100k, how much am I getting back after 3 months, what are your charges, what taxes are deducted). An illustrative guide helps in understanding/working out if the investment is actually worth it.

Already on this topic, I'm seeing some disappointing interest rates (1%, 3%, etc). It's important to work out all the figures to ensure you are not left at a loss or with very little profit at the end of your investment after all deductions. This is the reason why it's important to shop around and compare rates and charges before you commit to an investment plan.

It's also important to ask what penalties are in place if you decide to request for your money before the end of the agreed term. Some banks/investment companies are so mean with penalties as high as 50%. So if your example, you invested 100k and decided to cash in at year 2 and not year 6 as agreed, all you get back is 50k (minus all other deductions).

In summary, do your due diligence properly. Check with different banks/ insurance companies. Read up on the companies profile, those at the helm of affairs (they are the ones that decide how these monies are invested) and their reputation. For example, ARM was previously owned by GTB and they also started the very successful "discovery fund". So I could trust their fund managers to properly manage the money market fund which I subscribed to.

Doubledouble:
Hello mamas!
I need opinions and advise. My kids have wasted all the cereal I bought. Not even half of Gerber cereal did they eat...after buying so much! I was of the school of thought that it's whatever you teach/introduce to them they will take after all, what do they know?? So I bought plenty but they've shown me they are the ones in control not me!

With my tail in between my legs, I listened to my sis and tried pap- after all my mouth on never giving babies pap...smh. Anyways, they take pap like PROS. My 1st problem is the groundnut powder I mix the pap with. If there's a tiny seed of groundnut my girl will gag n throw up. I now decided to blend with a lil water into paste n refrigerate. Is this okay?? How long can it keep?? Refrigerator is on 90% of the time. Is there any other way to incorporate the groundnut with the pap grains??

The other thing is my boy- still not eating much solids. The first few mins he will open his mouth and eat but loses interest after 4-5 tiny filled spoons. He will shut the mouth like those soldiers guarding Aso Rock. Thing is if you smear on his lips or by mistake get the food into his mouth, he will lick n eat ooo, but to open the mouth of his free will, that is like world war 3. How do I get him to eat better?? Feeding time with him does my head in. His food is still mainly formula, he weaned himself from breast milk at 8months. His weight is fantastic and his paediatrician, thinks am worrying over nothing...but she's not the one buying formulas...

Apologies I'm just replying.

Have you tried sweet potatoes combo? Babies tend to love sweet potatoes.

Mashed sweet potatoes with diced boiled chicken works well. Sweet potatoes with mixed vegetables (carrot, sweet corn, green peas, broccoli) is also another fab combo. You can interchange sweet potatoes with Irish potatoes.

Sweet potatoes, sweet red pepper and spinach Is another combo I recently tried and my son loves.

Another combo that's a hit is minced meat stew (minced beef, onions, sweet peppers all fried in small sunflower oil), Irish potatoes and small oily Fish (mackerel). The minced meat stew can also be used to serve him pasta.

Boiled Sweet or Irish potatoes mashed with boiled ripe plantain is another favourite.

Since your son likes pap, you can blend these combos listed above and feed him and sees if he likes it.

With kids, it's all about the texture of the food in their mouth. Your son might not like lumpy food and would rather like his as a smooth paste.

Oven baked potato chips with fish is another combo. If your son has no allergy, wheat bread is another favourite.

In addition to everything listed above, try and be more creative during feeding times. Other tricks such as singing, using words like "yummy", you pretending to eat the food, a big "yayyyy"/excitement and clapping for him every time he takes a spoon also encourages him to experiment more with food.
