Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, otherwise known as Shiites, said on Monday that they would march on Abuja to protest the continued detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, in the Department of State Service.

They noted that following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum given by the sect to the Federal Government within which to release El-Zakzaky, Shiites in millions would occupy the federal capital until their leader was released.

The group spoke under the aegis of ‘Save Zakzaky’s Life Group of Nigeria,’led by its National Coordinator, Bashir Marafa.

The group asserted that as Nigerians, “We have the right to show our grievances and concerns in peaceful manner.

“The police, soldiers and all other security agencies should take note. They should never harass, or intimidate us. Our slogan is free Zakzaky. Our mission in Abuja is to seek the release of our leader, Shaik Ibrahim Zakzaky. Nothing, but that.”

It can be recalled that members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), otherwise called, the Shi’ites, on Thursday, September 22, 2016 marched across major streets of Abuja, the Federal Capital territory, seeking the release of their leader, El-Zakzaky.

Mr. El-Zakzaky has been in detention since December last year after soldiers killed and secretly buried over 300 members of the Shiite group in a massacre that has been condemned by local and international rights groups.

P.S.. Sometimes when you guys tout international bodies, one can't help but laugh heartily aswear.. You think they care about anything but their bottomline? Why is it so acceptable that the Army, Police and other security agencies are at liberty to kill and maim Nigerian citizens at will? Have they now been constituted a firing squad? Does it mean civil protests now amount to death wishes? Is it not a problem that Nigerian lives are expendable particularly by those sworn to protect them? Whatever happened to rubber bullets or blanks or stun guns, even teargas to disperse protests in the event of any unruly conduct? Must it be the lead pellets and certain death/bodily harm and blood?

How do u calmly summarise it as a death wish then? Has Zakzaky been charged with any crime? Will they be committing any offence by embarking on peaceful protests along d streets n highways of Abuja?

El-Zakzaky has not been charged with any crime before any court. He is being held in custody without any formal charges against him. Even if he has been charged with any offence, civil protests for his release are no crimes for which citizens should be threatened or even faced with death from security agents.
