Zik was clearly uncomfortable and squirmish, just like Ojukwu was when Gowon tried to shake his hand at Aburi. In those days, Igbos considered Hausas to be inferior.

The Northerners began to feel mighty when they massively joined the Armed forces and had access to fire power.

SE and north were fighting inter-tribal wars during that period so its normal for a SE politician back then to feel uncomfortable whenever they were with northern politicians..

Its not the weird SE politicians you have today that will be rolling on the floor.. in those days the SE would have mobilized and attacked the northern villages..

Note: there were no states, so an attack on any SE village was seen as an attack on the SE not the useless and senseless arguments about what state someone is from...

What we had then was the Eastern Region. Not SE. The Eastern region covered all the states in the present SE and SS with HQ at Enugu. There were no states until Gowon and Awo decided to split us up to reduce the influence and power of Igbos.

but u can see that zik is not comfortable with that kind of 'oga boss' posture of Bello its clear he is shifting out albeit diplomatically - hence the smile. . .

while Awolo is so comfortable with were he is - he is even snuggling closer! oga boss and his loyal slave lipsrsealed lipsrsealed cheesy grin
you sure dont know history of nigeria. On the contrary it was yoruba that couldnt accept being under northerners, did you know that north and east aligned to form the ruling party in first republic? With zik and figure head and balewa as real head and awolowo as opposition? Do you know that akintola incurred wrath of yoruba because of his alignment with north so as to increase federal presence in yorubaland ? If you speak yoruba go and listen to his speaches on youtube. Have you heard of joke like "kaka ka dobale fun gambari, ka kuku" meaning its better to die than bowing for a northerner.

Awo was content with what he had in the west. Gowon decided to create states because he wanted to cause division and eat out of western and eastern region's revenue and before the civil war the north had been warned not to secede by foreigners supporting the north and the foreigners told them Nigeria's revenue comes from the south..

With black gold been found in the south, if the south had remained west and east regions the black gold would have skyrocketed the south's economy..

Stop blaming Gowon because he was looking out for northern interest while Ironsi, ojukwu and crew were looking out for their selfish interests instead of the Eastern interests. Ironsi, Ojukwu and crew were too short-sighted and selfish to notice that the eastern region was going to be extremely rich unless they were "paid" by foreigners to start a war..

most of them don't know or they feign ignorance that the east has always aligned with the north.. That's one of the reasons I feel the civil war was planned to abolish regionalism and feed on revenue from the western region..

You can't assume those who comment on Nairaland are representative of everyone else. People who comment on nairaland are not up to 10% of the population, don't let's be quick to generalize using NL as a base.

You are right. many were born in the North, but I'm sure you know the reason for that. Before and after independence Igbo were heading the civil service as well as the Teaching institutions in the North. Igbos were recruited by the colonial administration to educate and run the Northern civil and teaching services. Being the most ubiquitous of all Nigerian tribes, many of our grandparents took up higher positions up North.

Even my mother was born in Lafia because my grandfather was a school headmaster in Lafia then. My mom is over 70 now. So Zik, Ojukwu, Nzeogwu's parents amongst others had to raise a family where they found themselves. Besides, they had a privileged life up North.
