Asiwaju Tinubu : The Limits Of Political Influence By Joseph Edgar by Smoke2015: 9:07am On Oct 10, 2016
I had watched strenuously to see how far the Asiwaju would go with wielding so much power over his political structure spanning the whole of the South west and creeping towards the centre with no executive powers but mere influence. As a student of politics and a graduate of Political Science I have come to realize very succinctly that influence remains an aberration in the vicious game that is politics.

It is what people on the street calls 'breeze'. It cannot bite, does not have any legal backing, trading on morality and 'what is right' and as such enforcement of decisions especially disciplinary is at best very tricky. Today I am very sure that the Asiwaju would be rueing the day he decided to give himself the spurious title of 'Party Leader'.

For a strategist of his calibre, this was a fatal blow to his legacy. How on earth did he think he would continue to rule over his 'minions' especially with the integration of other soldiers in the enlarged party structure that was built with just influence. You see the game in which he holds whoever is the Lagos State Governor can never be used in the game at the centre. You cannot control the President of Nigeria and Commander of the Armed Forces with mere influence that comes with the empty post of Party Leader. This to me is his folly and I am sure in his moments of reflection he would just be shaking his head with regrets.

The Presidents statement during his inauguration perfectly captured this. He had said, I belong to no one. That to me perfectly encapsulates what I am talking about. Simply because you played a major role in bringing about the electoral victory is not enough currency to wield the kind of influence the Asiwaju was looking at wielding in national politics. This could be gleaned in all the subsequent defeats he has faced and culminating in this latest affront by the party chairman. Femi Fani Kayode who I usually do not agree with, put everything in true perspective in one of his numerous write ups when he illustrated how Tinubu has been embarrassed by the establishment ever since the inauguration. From the Kwara State Governorship poll, through the appointments of Fashola and the former Ekiti Governor, through even the appointment of Nike Animashaun and now the Ondo state debacle is beginning to show the Asiwaju as a giant with a clay feet.

How can you ever plan to hold power without legal backing. That is not legitimate power and as such cannot achieve sustainable leverage. I will say, he was lucky with Fashola and is also being lucky with Ambode but can you imagine a Fayose as Governor of Lagos State or even Wike and you will begin to see what I am talking about. Continuing to expect loyalty from gratitude is stupidity pardon my disrespect. But that is exactly what has been happening.

Chief Awolowo insisted on being the Premier and when he went for election in the centre and failed he came back to reclaim his executive powers and this led to the fracas that led to all that wahala in the old west simply because the combatants understood the powers that came with Executive positions.

If the Asiwaju was Party Chairman today and with his clout and charisma, even the President would think twice before he moved against him. Let us look at Chief Adisa Akinloye in the second republic, he was so powerful that his image loomed large even far and above that of the President. He never got to that point by wielding just influence.

So my advise to the Asiwaju is for him to either seek executive powers by throwing himself up for elections either at the party level or at the National platform or simply just retire from politics before he is rudely humiliated by people who despite their gratitude to him for 'making them what they are' would not allow that to becloude their judgement or decision taking in the pursuit of both their personal and national goals.

Really sad that such a brilliant tactician could not see this. Really painful.

grin nice writeup.

tinubu has been cut to size. he would have remained in controlling half of his western region. but no he wanted to extend his political career to center.

but unfortunately the center politics is more wide and bigger than he thought, and a mere party chairman cannot influence center politics. now he is even losing the half western region he use to control just like OBJ.

So lots of people are waiting for the downfall of this man. But i think some people are saying he is going down politically, if so why is it that series of write-ups about him dominates the pages of social medias everyday. I am very sure that before the end of today at least two more threads about him will be pushed to this front page. All these are what makes him more popular by the day.

Anyway... I STAND WITH TINUBU any time, any day, he had been through political fights and came out strong, this won't be an exception.

His influence is only limited to the SouthWest

The North are teaching him how to play Chess.

My fear for Tinubu is that, the DSS may try to discover an unexisting 2 million dollars in his bedroom, by so doing, Tinubu may find himself in Kirikiri Maximum Prison.
The North will turn against him, SS and SE will first wait to see the best way to fellow, While the South West will be deeply divided on Tinubu issues...
any government that will ever emerged that hate the ss and se will surely go the way of Buhari' government. we own 80% of the economy power in Nigeria.

Oga oooo. So many people are waiting for tinubu to fall.

Nice observation. People are stoked on the personal and professional implosion of the high and mighty because it gives them a sense of satisfaction seeing them fall.

More often than not, this act is driven by sheer jealousy. They derive joy from the mighty falling because it makes them feel better about their little lives. The feeling that comes with knowing that anyone could be anything.

@topic,

It's funny how people had to wait until victory was achieved to remind him of his limits.

Did they not realize from the get-go that the was doing it ultimately for his own benefit? Or what did they think was his motivation? Benevolence?

Is Tinubu selfish? Yes; just like everybody else.
Is he a giant? Sure, yes.
Does he have a clay feet? No, not a chance.

He will rise back on his feet. I doubt they can even cut him down to size. Even the devil knows to respect pacts and pay back.

You should never bite the finger that fed you, regardless what.

Now I understand fully why Krill said in Mechanic Resurrection, that loyalty is a scarce commodity in his line of business.

Loyalty is the essential of every deal, whether an ideal, a relationship, or job.

I don't know why yorubas will never learn, it beats me how they go about beating their chests shouting 'Sophistication' while everything is pointing to the contrary.

Benjamin Adekunle took his hatred for Igbos to another level during the civil war when he went about shooting women and children at the outskirts of Biafra while the hausa/fulani were watching. After using him, they disgraced him out of the army without any benefits such that he was looking for small contracts to feed himself before he died. At some point, his son was begging for donations to be made to take him to just Ghana for treatment. We are not even talking of taking him to the USA, Germany or UK oo, just to ordinary Ghana that we can trek into he could not afford it.

Obafemi Awolowo was also used by the hausa/fulani to wage the war against Igbos were he suggested that Biafran children be starved which lead to the death of so many. Awolowo was hoping that the hausa/fulani would compensate him by supporting him to become president but it only turned out he had been used and dumped. The northerners threw all their support behind their son Shagari and Awolowo was never president. As though this was not enough, Babangida was about to arrest Awolowo(which would have been the second time the northerners would be arresting him if it had happened) and to avoid this disgrace, Awolowo had to commit suicide by drinking a posionous substance.

Abiola the yoruba aere onakankanfo thought that he had the north all behind him only for them to cancel his electoral victory and throw him in prison. The hausa/fulani still went ahead to serve him a very special tea which he drank and died. They went a step further by dispatching his wife Kudirat to join him in eternity.

This brings us down to Bola Ahmed Tinubu aka BAT- jagajaga borgu. Like FFK said, Buhari is the spirit clearly behind Tinubu's woes. The hausa/fulani are out to destroy Tinubu and reduce him to one of those agberos running around Lagos shouting 'owomida' at the top of their voices. Again, another yoruba leader has been used and is being dumped. Tinubu is now sounding so humble to avoid the fulani's koboko.

Dutchboy:
"The real enemy is the man that stole the city hall. The enemy is the Iragbiji upstart who seized the local government Secretariat at Glover street in Ikoyi. Our collective enemy is the greedy man who bought the old Nurses House, the Falomo shopping complex, the Lagos state Polytechnic property at Ojota, the stretches of acres at Lekki, the old Strabag yard at Alausa, the innumerable beach front properties long owned by the people of Lagos state, the billion naira Queen’s Drive mansion, the illegal Lekki Toll Gate, the First Nation Airline, the strings of media conglomerates, the Vault and Garden Cemetery, the vast Estates on the shores of Oniru beach , the endless choice hotels and high-rises, the shopping Mall in Ikeja and Lekki, and many great assets of our people this Iragbiji man has stolen with manic desperation. That is the real enemy we must chase back to Iraghiji.

With all these crazy and bewildering acquisitions , it is obvious that this Iragbiji upstart suffers from a disease called AFFLUENZA. It is an incurable malady which makes the pathetic sufferer to pursue blind, greedy, desperate and infectious craving for acquisition after acquisition. Here , the demented sufferer can never stop the craving for unnecessary endless accumulation of wealth. He does not know what is enough. Here wealth is glorified in place of the Almighty God. This is the dreadful disease Tinubu is suffering from.

Let us remove and dismantle the greedy contraption of Bola Tinubu from Lagos and the whole South West before the madness of the Iragbiji man corrupts the whole nation."

No spoon is long enough to dine with the devil, history is been recycled and people will never learn.
Buhari's 2003, 2007, and 2011 electoral defeats taught lessons... Buhari despite been an influential figure from the North didnt come close to victory in the various poles, until in the 2015 elections ( the Yorubas ) Tinubu, Obasanjo, Amaechi etc threw their weight behind him to ensure his victory.

Is the Northern influence in politics over-rated??

Can the a Northerner succeed to the highest position without the support of any group from the South??
