NUPENG To Embark On A 3-Day Warning Strike by Islie: 5:44pm On Dec 18, 2016
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) says its members would begin a three-day nationwide warning strike by January 9 2017, in protest of the anti-labour practices of international oil companies.

Tokunbo Korodo, the south-west chairman of the union, told NAN in Lagos that the warning strike was inevitable because all other options had failed.

He noted that in spite of the federal government’s directive that both the workers and oil companies should maintain status quo, the latter party is acting above the law.

Korodo said NUPENG has to “take the bull by the horn” as it appears that the oil companies are more powerful than the government.

“We are not gaining anything by going on strike because it is not a joyful thing but as a union, we have to protect and fight for the welfare of our members.

“We have sensitised the public and also seek the intervention of the federal government over the anti-labour activities of the IOCs on our members but we are not getting results.

“Our members that put in their best within the duration of time they worked were not paid their severance packages by their employers when they sacked them.

“This is a big slap and it will not be allowed. What they are practising here in Nigeria, they cannot practise in their countries, so that is why we say enough is enough. We will take the bull by the horn.

The chairman said what led to the planned warning strike was inherited by the present administration, while some occurred within the same government.

“Two hundred and fifty members of our union were affected by the divestment by Chevron Nigeria Ltd., in the south-east. And this is giving us a serious concern because they cannot feed their families.

“The minister of labour, Chris Ngige, asked all parties to maintain the status-quo ante and we complied because we respect the authority.

“But the IOCs seem to be above the law or more powerful than the government; they failed to maintain the status-quo ante being amicably agreed to both parties.

“Chevron had to tell our 250 members that their contract with it was no more binding on it because it cannot trace the company that employed them as contract workers for it.”

“The minister said that Chevron had to pay the sacked workers but its management refused to comply. It got to a time when Sen.Ngige called for a meeting in Abuja to mediate; at times its representatives would not show up.

“We would risk our lives and resources to Abuja, no IOCs member would come. Even when their representatives came, they would be those without a mandate to represent the organization just to frustrate the discussion.”

He alleged that all the IOCs in the country were involved in these anti-labour practices.

“We do not want the public to see the strike as if we are unnecessarily punishing Nigerians. That’s why we are using this period to protest by asking tanker drivers to hang green leaves on their trucks and our members to wear red cloth.

“By next year, if our grievances are not addressed within this period, we will proceed on a three-day warning strike. If the government and people concerned are not able to apprehend and resolve it, we may be forced to turn the strike into an indefinite one.” (NAN)

New year gift, fuel scarcity looming, brace up Nigerians , seems the government doesn't care about anything that doesn't directly affect the income and revenue of government, hence the reason why they have not deemed it fit to look into the matter, I thought government was supposed to stand for the interest of its people, yet they allow foreigners to come here and treat our people any how and get away with it

the worse part of this whole thing is that the people incharge of looking into cases like this will turn a blind eye, I don't understand why the government will turn a blind eye and allow foreigners to treat it's citizens anyhow

dont blame oil company for this.
blame buhari.
he has put in alot of anti-business policies that make it difficult for companies.
shell is even thinking of pulling out of Nigeria completely if buhari continue blackmailing them.

But its Nigerians that have chosen to enslave themselves. They come they pollute the land and we are quick to rush when they say " let me employ you" . Its even more foolish when some are agitating that they move their headquartes to their land so they can further enslave them

This nupeng strike is just a ploy to suffer Christians who are preparing for holy day!

this country is messed up in all facets, these foreigners know the language of Nigerians, they know it's easy to get away with alot of things, all you need to do is to dangle a few dollars around, especially oil companies who neglect community service to their host communities and even spills because they know a few brown envelopes with keep officials shut and allow their people to suffer

Companies don't exist to feed their workers. They exist to provide profits to their shareholders. That's the sad but blunt truth.

Oil companies are facing losses due to the collapse of oil prices and are desperate to cut costs. They are neither the federal government who will have lots of redundant workers on its books whom they borrow money to pay. Neither are they state governments owing their bloated workforce for months

it's quite sad... truly change begins with individuals.... we as a people need proper re-orientation about life, because it's sad how people can step on others just for their own benefits, these in turn create desperation and unsafe society... we have missed it big time.

Cabals everywhere, cos of the faulty foundations Nigeria was built on.

If Nupeng strikes, then there would be fuel scarcity and the masses would suffer.

Just like electricity workers going on strike, the consumers suffer.

Build pipelines to channel products from terminal to mini depots, and do away with tanker drivers

But Militants will still bleed the lines.

Pathetic
