I was having toothache to the point where I could no longer bear it. So I asked my friend to escort me to one of the govt hospitals here in Abuja, this happened yesterday .
Before I continue, lemme make it clear that the last time I went to a hospital was more than 10 years ago (yea, I'm blessed like that smiley ) , so I don't have the exact details of how they operate.
On getting to the hospital, I was asked to get a card, which I did. We then headed to the dental clinic to do the card registration. I was called upon by the dentist and he started asking me questions abt my case. I have to mention that he also asked irrelevant questions like am I married? What is my relationship with my friend I came with? Where I live?, how I came from such a far place to the hospital, which I later realized was just his gimmick to know if he could scam me .

After that, he told me I needed to extract one tooth and fill the other close to it. He then said everything was 7k. He asked me to go pay the money to the hospital cashier but I was surprised wen he said I should only pay 2500 for the extraction first. When I hesitated and wondered why I shouldn't pay all the money at once, he gave a flimsy excuse of how I should pay it step by step incase if he doesn't finish the procedure.
So I was surprised when he extracted the tooth and filled the other tooth in less than an hour, without waiting for me to make the payments in steps like he said. It was when one of the nurses called me inside their office there and asked me to pay the remaining money that I sensed sth was not right. I told them I was coming, went outside and told my friend what happened and he said I should give them the money anyways , that maybe that's their system there and I might end up getting embarrassed if I want to take up the case.
I gave them the money and left the hospital. On getting back home, I couldn't stop wondering if there was sth I could have really done abt it, hence my decision to post it here. I don't feel it's right for these people to collect money from vulnerable patients and still receive their salary at the end of the month.

Has corruption really gotten to this extent where scammers now wear a lab coat?
At least your tooth was perfectly removed. Thank God for successful tooth surgery.

You were not duped, they were just trying to short-change their hospital,i had similar experience i was told point blank
IS EITHER YOU PAY 80.000 TO THE ACCOUNTING OFFICE OR PAY US 40.000 THEN PAY 15.000 naira to the accounting office
The actual price of the procedure was 80k but i ended up paying 55k

Sorry OP its not a new thing. I am of the opinion that unless there is a very strict punishment (e.g capital punishment) corruption can never be eradicated in Nigeria.
We can scream corruption all day long and try to fight it but until the civil servants are paid properly and as when due, this will not stop. Take the case of a policeman that earns peanuts.....you arm him with a gun and expect him not to extort money from motorists? The government should do the right thing and see how people will change.

How is this a scam or corruption? Your story makes no sense. If you were overcharged for the operation then that is a different kettle of fish. The dentist asked you to pay N2500 first and a nurse asked you to pay the balance after the procedure, so what the heck are you complaining about? Go get a life.

You're wrong here. In every part of the world a doctor must ask you those questions for his consultation to be complete. It is not out of place at all.
These questions will directly or indirectly affect the treatment given.
For instance if you're married, a doctor will exclude any drug that might temporarily affect your sex drive.

Your friend too must be identified because some patients will not give accurate info when some persons eg their boyfriend is around, but might be truthful with their brothers.

All standard procedures, my dear.. Well since you've not been in the hospital for 10 years , your ignorance is a good excuse to be overlooked

The reason I used the word "scammed" was cos the dentist made me pay to him instead of the cashier, and he deceived me into doing that. Check where I said he kept asking me personal questions (which I later discovered was his tactic to know if I would fall victim) and how he lied that I wasn't supposed to pay yet till after the procedure.
Maybe scam is not the best choice of word but it's pretty close

At first I didn't see anything wrong with the questions but it was after I left the hospital, it became clear to me. It was just a tooth extraction procedure. He didn't need to ask me my relationship with the person I came with, who told me about the hospital, if I've ever been to the hospital before. He just wanted to know if I would be deceived into leaving him with the money

I had a similar experience not quite long. went to a government hospital in Kwara state for medical test required to process my law school admission. was asked to go to one office like that, only for the guy to be acting like he's my brother, he took me to the doctor, incidentally we bear the same surname. just told the doctor that na im sister I be, make she write the necessary prescription.
he told me I'll pay #2000 for hospital stamp and report after concluding the lab test. what I noticed was, the doctor didn't mention any money to me, I suspected a foul play, so he took me back to the doctor to write the report, the lady told her to go that she'll attend to me later, my guy took a few steps, turned back and told Mr

the guy that clear her bills, said she should let the money go,but she choose to ferment trouble upandan, why she come dey take panadol for another person headache... in every public health care, there are procedures, Monetary targets are set up by the directors to the staffs, so if the dentist did not extort from you as u claimed how is he going to meet up with the target, in police station bail is free , but why do u pay before u bail someone, u are talking as if u are not in Nigeria, if u want to write petition against the poor guy, I think minister of health, commissioner of health and the medical director of that hospital should be defendant 1,2&3 and leave the poor guy doing his job out of this,

I said ok

I already planned my escape route, but had no choice when the doctor said he'll be the one to stamp it, on getting to his office, he collected the money first and kept in the drawer, then locked it, that was when I knew it was a scam.
Any money that belongs to the hospital will be paid to the revenue or account dept with receipt, any other money paid through any other means goes to those thieves pocket.

where I wanted to do xray, I was told to buy gloves compulsorily at the rate of #50, the gloves were collected but wasn't used for me, that means they'll take it back and resell it again.
corruption has eaten deep in every sector of this country.
So pathetic!

This reminds me of many years ago when I got readmitted into the university after my first program. The class rep announced that we'd be paying #100 each for CLASS REGISTRATION.
I'd never heard of anything like that and wasted no time demanding for the source of the info. In a class of more than 1200, #100 will amount to no less than #120,000, payable to who?
I politely told the class rep that I would want to hear from whoever sent him on such mission and until then I won't pay a dime...Suffice it to say that other students paid up quickly.
Shortly thereafter, my HOD lost his mum and another announcement was made that we would be paying a compulsory #100 to buy cow for him. I just laughed and told the class rep that the HOD can't compel us to buy him anything...again I didn't pay.
When the response was low, he (HOD) came to the class one morning and gave us an assignment, asking us to submit it with the #100 tucked in between the foolscap sheet, else we'd fail. Did I write the test? No! Did I fail? NOOO!
All manner of clearance came up each semester with a #500 collection from different course lecturers and none did I do cos I knew their target was the money, given that my class was a large one and a potential extortion field. Funny enough, despite the threats of "you won't see your result if you don't do it" I would ALWAYS see mine as soon as they are pasted and never had an absent case or carry over till I graduated.
I went to a Local Government Council secretariat to register my marriage last year, I was asked to pay #7,500 into the council's account, then when coming with the teller, I would bring two bottles of CHAMDOR wine and a bottle of groundnut, when I asked "for who, council chairman? the woman at the desk told me that is the norm. I left, went to another LGC close by, paid #3,500, got my receipt and went home. Was my marriage registered? OFCOURSE!!!
Corruption is in every sector and if you insist on doing the right thing, you'd be surprised how easy it is.
...You just educated me..thank you so much!
