the guy that clear her bills, said she should let the money go,but she choose to ferment trouble upandan, why she come dey take panadol for another person headache... in every public health care, there are procedures, Monetary targets are set up by the directors to the staffs, so if the dentist did not extort from you as u claimed how is he going to meet up with the target, in police station bail is free , but why do u pay before u bail someone, u are talking as if u are not in Nigeria, if u want to write petition against the poor guy, I think minister of health, commissioner of health and the medical director of that hospital should be defendant 1,2&3 and leave the poor guy doing his job out of this,

I was having toothache to the point where I could no longer bear it. So I asked my friend to escort me to one of the govt hospitals here in Abuja, this happened yesterday .
Before I continue, lemme make it clear that the last time I went to a hospital was more than 10 years ago (yea, I'm blessed like that smiley ) , so I don't have the exact details of how they operate.
On getting to the hospital, I was asked to get a card, which I did. We then headed to the dental clinic to do the card registration. I was called upon by the dentist and he started asking me questions abt my case. I have to mention that he also asked irrelevant questions like am I married? What is my relationship with my friend I came with? Where I live?, how I came from such a far place to the hospital, which I later realized was just his gimmick to know if he could scam me .

After that, he told me I needed to extract one tooth and fill the other close to it. He then said everything was 7k. He asked me to go pay the money to the hospital cashier but I was surprised wen he said I should only pay 2500 for the extraction first. When I hesitated and wondered why I shouldn't pay all the money at once, he gave a flimsy excuse of how I should pay it step by step incase if he doesn't finish the procedure.
So I was surprised when he extracted the tooth and filled the other tooth in less than an hour, without waiting for me to make the payments in steps like he said. It was when one of the nurses called me inside their office there and asked me to pay the remaining money that I sensed sth was not right. I told them I was coming, went outside and told my friend what happened and he said I should give them the money anyways , that maybe that's their system there and I might end up getting embarrassed if I want to take up the case.
I gave them the money and left the hospital. On getting back home, I couldn't stop wondering if there was sth I could have really done abt it, hence my decision to post it here. I don't feel it's right for these people to collect money from vulnerable patients and still receive their salary at the end of the month.

Has corruption really gotten to this extent where scammers now wear a lab coat?

No my dear just bear it. because if police arrest that doctor nw wailers will say buhari hates doctors. So sorry tho.

Corruption is embedded in almost all Nigerians. These are same of people that would be blaming the Government for bad governance whereas in their own little corner they are worse. If Nigeria must change, individual must change his/her attitude.

You hammer am well. Lots of people criticising govt now are doing so for personal reasons. They used to corner govt money to themselves and when the equation changed they started hating acting as if they have national interest.

Go back to the hospital. Make a formal complaint to the head of dental department as well as the hospital management. Describe the incident, the time it happened, where it happened and as much description of the dentist and the nurse as you can remember. There is a duty roster in every hospital and it is easy to identify who was on duty. Besides, this might not be the first complaint against the particular dentist and/or nurse. Resist such extortion next time and make a formal complaint.

The Dentist didn't Scam you per se,rather he was trying to play a fast one on the Hospital,he did the procedures you paid for but paid in only that for the extraction and pocketed the other in connivance with the other workers..

The reason I used the word "scammed" was cos the dentist made me pay to him instead of the cashier, and he deceived me into doing that. Check where I said he kept asking me personal questions (which I later discovered was his tactic to know if I would fall victim) and how he lied that I wasn't supposed to pay yet till after the procedure.
Maybe scam is not the best choice of word but it's pretty close
Being asked personal questions in a hospital by a Doctor is standard practice and not because he was trying to scam you,you seem to be an overly suspicious person or an highly ignorant one..

The doctors are scamming the hospitals through under-the-table payments.

The hospitals are scamming the doctors through unpaid salaries and renegading on agreements.

You got your teeth fixed. Let them figure out ways of outdoing each other. The hero in you may turn out to be a victim. The dentist fulfilled his obligations to you.

At first I didn't see anything wrong with the questions but it was after I left the hospital, it became clear to me. It was just a tooth extraction procedure. He didn't need to ask me my relationship with the person I came with, who told me about the hospital, if I've ever been to the hospital before. He just wanted to know if I would be deceived into leaving him with the money

U can clearly deduce that this guy na doctor..forming the clerking is standard procedure, all that bs! If u see bad thing either condemn or shurrup...The guy did sharp practise finish!! Nigerians and no shame..tufia.

You can go back to the hospital and complain of feeling pain from the extracted tooth. Then use d opportunity to find out the doctor's name. You can even ask for his number so you can contact him personally in case of further complications.

You can use this format. But I don't know if you will have time sha. After getting the number, you can search him out on FB and true caller, then expose him on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.com, Nairaland, Linda Ìkejì, etc.

well, being in Nigeria or not, its important that someone goes to the hospital for regular checkups. Thats why you see men falling and dying, men sleeping and not waking up or the ones that fall on the soccer pitch and just die. Especially african men. Most of them have high cholesterol levels due to the kinds of food they eat e.g too much red meat which they think is enjoyment but it increases the cholesterol levels by a wide margin. Butter, Sugar, Milk and the rest of them, The list is endless. You hardly see them exercise or eat fruits or vegetables. Go to Youtube and reasearch football players that have died on the pitch. They are almost all African players. After people would think someone is following them from the village. Nobody is following anybody. They refused to take care of their health. ALot of people are walking corpses and they do not know.

Something as simple as knowing your blood pressure level eludes most africans. So please dont say anything about abroad or no abroad.

And Nigerians will always complain about their 'corrupt government'.
They will always complain of corrupt people holding the country back yet they themselves are the epitome of corruption.
All these stories of corruption in Healthcare sector is not even surprising to me. Every primary Healthcare center or general/state hospital has its own way of scamming patients.
Everyone.
If it's not by hiding hidden costs in the treatment then it's by hiding free drugs that are provided either by WHO or UNICEF.
In one general hospital I worked it was so bad that they were even hiding the free drugs meant for children and the hospital was located in a place whee like 70%of the people there lived in poverty and lack. Even the head doctor called us one day to demand that we submit a percentage of any 'extra charges' we make during the course of carrying out treatment. It was like he say it as a normal thing, he already expected us to extort those villagers even before getting any indication that we were interested in doing such.
