Sorry about that dude, but the way you've been going about everything, I just knew it was only a matter of time. Sad thing is that you've influenced loads of people. Now people are registering not just with the intention of earning a legitimate living, but with the intention of cheating on tests, faking their nationalities and obtaining fraudulent tax identifications. It is one thing to go contrary to set principles and guidelines, it's another thing to be so brazen about it. As Nigerians, we carry a burden of questionable integrity, we can either ease that burden as a people or add to it. Nothing personal.

Very valid points. It's a pity what Yahoo boyz have done to our online reputation, jobs that come easily to freelancers from other countries may be difficult for us to get. The burden of questionable integrity is really not easy to bear, but I decided that I'll do this the right way or not at all.

@all, please try not to beat the guidelines, whatever gains you get can only be temporary, just think of how you would feel if a client takes your work without payment. Let us be our brother's keeper by not blocking the road that has brought relief to so many people.

I have noticed that there are also lots of scam artists on upwork. Please be careful when working for unverified payment clients, do not do any test jobs. I mean jobs that they ask you to work free for some hours as test. They are mostly using that test to get their jobs done for free. They will split jobs into bits, hire enough people and place them on test. After the so called test, they drop you and say you we're not qualified. So please do not do test jobs. Test should be unrelated to the job at hand. If not you Don work awuf.
If someone asks you to send your PayPal acct to pay into your acct or some no other money related info, please do not send. Make sure you do cash related stuff through the site.

I did not accept outside jobs. I worked for someone whose payment is unverified and now the pay is stuck cos he has to verify some things on upwork. If he doesn't clear it up doesn't that mean I will not get paid? And as such I have done osho free job, what then do I do?

So, as an humanitarian, I have decided to take a time out of my busy schedule to be sharing this news. Perhaps with time, most member would be saved from scammers trick. I will also open a thread for it

What you should know

1. There are trusted xchangers in this thread and similar business thread
2. There are thieves waiting for you to fall to their trick and do a way with your hard earned money

How to identify the trusted xchangers

1. There are people that have a great reputation in this business here. I will mention few. Knowing them is a step to avoid scammer
Examples of these trusted fellow are:

etc

2. You can take the vouch of any of the trusted member in order to be able to trust an unknown fellow you wanna deal with

How to identify scam

1. A scammer don't usually write details such as number etc about themselves in their profile
2. They usually offer mouthwatery trade e.g selling bitcoin at 400/$
3. Their mobile number if typed on google brings out information different from what they tell you
4. Their profile is ususally new
5. They usually have little or no posts
6. They are always in a hurry during transaction
7. They use different names and different accounts
8. Block your number immediately after you transfer money to them
etc

How to prevent yourself

1. Trade with trusted xchanger ONLY
2. Use ESCROW incase you are trading with less trusted fellow
3. Research on identity of the fellow you want to trade with i.e don't rely 100% on my list - confirm my list from your little research

Indeed I opened this thread out of LOVE, I know quite well that most of us has benefited from. Since I know we all think and do things differently, I'll advice that Upwork is not for everyone. There are standards that must be followed. I EMPLOY EVERY NIGERIAN UPWORKER TO READ THIS ARTICLE ON THE BEST PRACTICES.

Here are six ways you can rock your Upwork experience and avoid interruptions that can kill your business’ productivity.

1. Accept Payments Only Through Upwork

Upwork offers payment protection for work that’s reported appropriately, with industry-leading security to protect both your personal and payment information. It also makes payments work more smoothly across borders: Clients can pay via credit card or PayPal, and freelancers can withdraw funds using the option that works best for them, including ACH direct deposit, U.S. dollar wire transfer, Payoneer, PayPal, and others.

Payments that take place outside of Upwork lose that protection, and without the built-in tools that support reporting and payment processing on Upwork, they can add to your business admin.

When you split your activity across multiple logins, you confuse people about who you really are and dilute the power of building a strong personal brand. Your single Upwork login includes access to any account type you may need: freelancer, client, or agency.

3. Use Your Own Account and Your Own Identity

Just be yourself on Upwork—including your real name and location.

You’re required to provide accurate and verifiable account and profile information. This transparency is also an important part of a marketplace that’s built on trust and your personal reputation.

To help keep your account and identity secure:

Respond quickly to requests to verify your identity (e.g., Participating in a phone or video verification, providing a government-issued photo ID).
Don’t transfer or sell account credentials to other users. For example, individual accounts may not be shared between users, and team members of an agency cannot share account or log-in credentials.
Don’t ever log into one of your client’s accounts on his or her behalf.

4. Make Sure Your Profile Is Accurate

Information about your identity needs to be honest and up-to-date, but to be successful, your profile should go beyond that to include recognized best practices:

Use your real name as well as a professional portrait for your profile photo.
Accurately describe your experience, skills, and qualifications and the services you offer.

5. Share Information Smartly

To protect yourself and your personal information, keep all contact with potential clients inside the Upwork platform.

Don’t list your email, your Skype contact information, your personal website, or a third-party profile (such as LinkedIn) in your profile.
Don’t share personal contact information with prospective clients. For example, use tools such as Upwork’s messaging and videoconferencing during the interview process, and use your Upwork profile to outline qualifications and share portfolio pieces.

Note: Once you and a client have agreed to work together, you can use whichever communication tools work best for your needs.

6. Being Successful Requires More than Complying with the Terms of Service

Running a successful freelance business means protecting the systems you use, such as Upwork, as well as your reputation. While there are rules for using the Upwork platform, much of being successful means meeting the expectation of your clients.

Here are a few extra tips to remain on the good side of both Upwork and your clients:

Really polish your profile. Check your profile for grammatical and spelling errors, use complete sentences, and make sure words and phrases are capitalized correctly.
Be responsive. Whether you receive a message from a client or from Upwork’s Support Team—including the Disputes team—always be as responsive as possible. If you’re going to be unavailable for a period of time, take advantage of Upwork’s “Out of Office” notification.
Do great work. When you accept a project, you promise to complete the assignment and to deliver high-quality work. Misrepresenting your skills or failing to perform work as promised can result in a low Job Success Score as well as disputes with your clients.

Seriously, I'm thinking of posting the respective exchangers and the rates they've been offering me since last night. I hope I won't be breaking any rules after all, I'll only be helping them promote their businesses

Nigerians don't seem to see anything wrong with bending the rules, maybe they need international exposure to really help them understand the damage they do to our reputation online.

When I got a remote job with a software company, I decided to share the opportunity here, only to start getting calls on how they can dupe the interview process, which made me delete my original Nairaland.com account I opened since 2008. I just couldn't take the risk as the moniker resembled my name.

I can't begin to tell you the comment some colleague made on our Skype chat, with regards to Nigeria. One simple example, on this particular day, we were discussing a Ransom email that a client of us received from Russia, when one dude from the US says "This Russian dude doesn't know what he is doing, he needs to go and learn how to scam from those Nigerians." it took all the will power in me not to reply him, after all my brothers won't learn to stop trying to cheat.

May God help us redeem this terrible image that we keep portraying of our beloved country. Now we have to work twice as hard to prove to international employers that we can deliver without scamming them.

Deleting the thread won't solve the problem, no matter what you do, there will still be some folks who would decide to cheat their way through. Technology is getting advanced everyday, and sooner than later they will be caught. Just try to moderate the thread as much as possible by calling out anyone who posts such information about breaking up work rules.

Together we can make things better for ourselves.
