Hey! It has little to do with being Muslim but more to do with political alliances. Northern elite always use Islam as cover when it comes to issues of romance like kidnapping Christian girls and forcefully marrying with claims that they have converted to Islam.

Ese Oruru, the Emir of Katsina and the 14 year old, the Igbo girl in Bida who abandoned school and was married off by the Etsu Nupe without her parents knowledge and many others. In the case, they have done nothing illegitimate. People involves are two adults and political alliance or not, islam permits polygamy. It is their problem, their headache.

He did not say they we're converted. He said they marry underage girls without parents consent under the excuse that they have converted to Islam.
Does converting to Islam mean you can marry her underage without her parents consent?
