Why is lalastical and co so keen on painting wizkid in a bad light. There are fresh topics of wizkid winning two MTV EMA last night. You didn't deem anyone fit to be on the front page.Instead you decide to bring a topic black balling wizkid that was written days ago.If you like this topic so much why didn't you put it on the front page days back it was created. Why wait now.

2016 has been a good year for Nigerian pop singer Wizkid, with his latest conquest at the recently-held MTV African Music Award (MAMA) in South Africa – winning 3 awards including the Artist of the Year – cementing his place as the reigning king of African music scene.

He has been an undeniable force in 2016, exporting African sound to global audience especially with the chart-topping record-breaking collaboration with Canadian rapper Drake on One Dance. He’s on top of his game.

What can Starboy (Yes, Mr Weeknd, you are a cheap thief) do to take his game to the next level on his forthcoming album?

Stop writing lousy lyrics.

I love Wizkid’s music since the days of Pakurumo and Love My Baby – which I consider an evergreen – and he’s constantly dropped hits that I love so much, like On Top Your Matter.

However some of his other songs including Tease Me, Jaiye Jaiye and In My Bed would have been very great pop songs…except they are thematically incoherent.

Let’s examine some of the lyrics of the three examples:

Tease Me is a song of seduction and wooing of a girl which devolves into a praise-singing tune of himself and his friends.

In Jaiye Jaiye, we have a lovely Afrobeat (the real Afrobeat) tune accentuated with masterful saxophone by Femi Kuti with lyrics talking about his dreams, aspirations and thanking God for his triumphs…until it tries to infuse too much Fela – “If you call her woman, African woman no go gree”.

In My Bed has a good club tune unfortunately watered down when he started praise-singing politicians and moneybags.

These are just some examples of why many of Wizkid’s songs will be ridiculed in the next 20 years or so like we do to Remedies’ Shako mo nowadays.

What Starboy should do is stick to just one subject per song in his forthcoming album, and his musical legacy – what we’ll remember him for when the light is off and the noise of the crowd has died down – will be that of a singer who made evergreen music.

Like he did on Ojuelegba.

While constructive criticism like this is welcomed, i would rather give kudos when needed first.

I have noticed since last night that Nairaland mods have refused to moved the success story of this youngster (2 MTV EMAS) to the front page but were quick to moved this particular topic.

You may have overlooked the first award majorly because it was announced before the show proper but you can't overlooked the second win which was announced during the show, World wide category.

He was not able to attend the event but did send a video shout-out to his fans and this is a real boost to his career in preparation for his first Grammy award nomination.

Re: Wizkid, Stop Writing Lousy Lyrics by Aida13: 10:35am On Nov 07, 2016
Abegi. It's not that deep please leave Wizkid, his lyrics and his career direction alone. Who made you an authority on the music industry to complain or advise a mega star or did he complain to you that he's not selling?

Oh by the way please leave The Weeknd alone abeg. Wizkid had the chance to make Starboy his brand but now a bigger star has used it and so what!??

how can a guy be at the highest height a Nigerian musician can attain and yet not be duely regonised. The guy won an European award--worldwide music ,,, thats a major mile for nigeria as a whole in terms of music nd people like this OP comes and tells him to change his lyrics and yet the stupid nairaland MODs move it to front page seriously tho , it's annoying

Re: Wizkid, Stop Writing Lousy Lyrics by temitope06(m): 10:59am On Nov 07, 2016
Yes he has been successful no doubt and we applaud his accolades but let's face the truth, his lyrical contents are mediocre and been watered down since his first album. I wouldn't place all the blame on him but the Nigerian music fans have very crappy taste in music. Any yee yee yee, everybody is grooving and dancing and the telecom coys are raining them with millions, why would anyone change that style. Tupac actually said in an interview that fans should hold them rappers accountable for the lyrics they put out. Of course it can't all be prime and proper deep lyrics but at least make it 50/50, do shitty music but also spit logical contents. Some fans are way too grown for his lyrics. Artistes should grow lyrically and not just remain the same, Jay said it all 'Ni**as want my old sh*t then buy my old albums'
Re: Wizkid, Stop Writing Lousy Lyrics by djlaqua91(m): 11:07am On Nov 07, 2016
We shouldn't always rush to condemn these artists. They're just fulfilling the market demands. You can't expect to hear a Cobham song or Frank Edward track in a club. Our dance music has ensured the foreign songs don't get that much airplay in clubs, radio etc unlike those days.
Even in US, Trap guys like Young Thug who sounds like a wounded Mosquito still sells mad. Variety is the spice of life. Although, our artists could still do more to improve their craft.
We're getting there.

Eminem's lyrics are deep.

M.i I respect him. knows how to keep business as business, unlike his wiskolo wiska bro jagz
Bro, Jesse Jagz lyrics are a million times deeper than MI's. Listen to songs like "My Brother". "Redemption" "God On The Mic" "The Search". No dey talk anyhow
