Buhari may have good intentions but his methodology is flawed.. sad

Only the FORCES of demand & supply can determine pricing, brute force will only lead to scarcity, which will only make a bad situation worse...

We know quite well saboteurs & speculators are the unseen hands driving up forex rate... cracking down on BDC operators is the wrongest move to make...
Nice comments. In economics, demand and supply will determine the price but in reality, other factors affect the price of a commodity. in Nigeria, hoarding is a major factor that is affecting the supply of dollars. Most of these BDC understand that once they can hoard the supply of dollars, that will lead to increase in value for the dollar and drop in the value of naira hence more profit for them since they will sell to the highest bidder. This type of demand and supply is man made as a result of careful and calculated intention to exploit and take advantage of situation. These demand and supply are not actually representing the market but the wish of those hoarding the dollar.

The saboteur here is the federal government that refuses to allow market forces do its work.

If it did, there'd be no speculators and "saboteurs" making fat profits.

It's like bringing up a girl to be wayward. Why complain when good for nothing men keep sleeping with her because she's too loose
Re: Dollar Scarcity To Worsen As Security Operatives Clamps Down On BDCs by Nobody:
i dont get? how is it going to worsen, if bdc sell at the prescribed rate, we should be fine, what they do is get from FGN at 390, pile it up in their safe and sell very little at a very high rate. Dss shd pick them all.

I suspect the writer of the article has some interior motive, trying to cause sentiment, he must be among the speculators

Thank you.

The real issue here is that it's the forces of corruption that are at play. What amazes me is that, do we even have laws in this country that can check these kind of issues. What Nigeria truly needs are strong institutions and revamped laws. Economic policies that work in other climes cannot work in Nigeria, nothing works here if it doesn't allow us to cut corners and have undue advantage.

We are our own worst enemies, we just like to shout government, as if we don't know it's the same wicked folks like the BDC operators that are in the govt.

Please cut the crap on good intentions. No one has bad intentions if you really consider everything.

Buhari just doesn't have the answer to our economic problems. It won't hurt you if you say it as it is, instead of trying to hide behind your index finger, sugar-coating the truth.

Brother. See where good intentions has gotten us oh. When people said this man only knows about cattles we no gree hear. Who goes to your business in insists you sell your goods at a price they miraculously feel. If the government says the rate is less than 400 tthen they should show buyers where to go. This is a double speak govt. BDCs don't sell beyon a very little margin. They count on turnover. The only indicator from this price is that they get it from CBN at something close to what they sell it. If PMB thinks he can slow down things like this, he needs to go to the rice market and force prices down. My God. How did we get ourselves here. This government is being run by PMB and DSS. Seems we don't have any other departments and agencies.Sad.

He's not wrong all the time. Government sold to the BDC after accepting to sell to their customers at an agreed price. Why then are they deviating from the agreement ?

They buy from government at 380 only to sell to the public at 460. That's not business but pure wickedness.
Why we Government sell Dollar at N380 when N315 is the real exchange rate moreover is it compulsory for Government to sell Dollar before we citizens can make use of it .... Am tayad of all this unbearable ridiculous situation

I think this brute force is only meant for criminal BDC operators who take cheap forex from a privileged channel (Travelex/FB), then go on to sell at a price which far exceeds the price they agreed to sell when they were given the cheap bills. An agreement is an agreement, if they want to sell at parallel rates, then they shouldn't buy at privileged rates.

That is not to say the CBN's policy of forcefully controlling the rate makes any sense, but the BDCs shouldn't be criminally greedy.
My friend,
How naive can you and the government be to think that banks and bureau de changes will simply ignore demand and supply dynamics to make a profit , and instead , conduct themselves to please the government?

Everyone is in business to have advantage.

Which part of economics and human nature do you not understand ?

If true, there are more civilized ways to deal with it.

Make them sign an agreement with a specific penalty for violation involved. With a court/legal seal on it. If a fine of say 50m or 100m is stipulated, it will work. Seize their assets or freeze bank account if caught. That will send a clear message.
