Abuja – Florence Omagbemi, coach of Super Falcons, on Monday said that the team was ready to take on Ghana in its second Group B match at the on-going Women African Cup of Nations.

Omagbemi, speaking via a social media platform, said that the team would play against the Black Queens of Ghana on Wednesday at Stade Limbe with the same zeal it played Mali.

“We are happy that we won our first game against Mali and we are trying to refocus our minds to our game against Ghana.

“We will take the Ghanaian team just like any other team we are playing. We will approach the game just like we approached the Malian game.

“With God on our side, we hope for the best,” Omagbemi said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria had earlier thrashed Mali 6-0 while Ghana had defeated Kenya 3-1 in each of their opening games.

Nigeria and Ghana both have three points each in Group B.

The tournament, which began on Saturday, Nov. 19, is expected to end on Dec.

News from GHANA:
Black Queens out to make history against Nigeria:

Ghana coach Yusif Basigi has set his sights on three points as they clash with rivals Nigeria at the 2016 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon on Wednesday.

The Black Queens are set to face the Super Falcons at the Limbe Stadium, three days after a hard-fought 3-1 win over Kenya in the group opener.

Nigeria, meanwhile, thrashed Mali 6-0, making clear their intentions for the tournament.

"The most important thing is the three points," Basigi said at the pre-match presser.

"We are not here to play good and lose in the end. Against Nigeria, it will be a different game and matches between the two teams are always unpredictable.

"The scoreline of the first match doesn’t matter. If Nigeria beat Mali 6-0, we could have also beaten Mali by 6-0 or more. The three points is what we aspire for, and after we can strategize for the next game."

Still chasing their first gold at the biennial competition, Ghana have thrice played Nigeria in the grand final of the championship - 1998, 2002 and 2006.

"I have psyched the players and prepared their mind and they are poised for the match," Basigi added.

"They are relaxed and will be battle ready.

"The stadium will be red, yellow and green [Ghana colours] and green, white and green [Nigeria colours]. It will be interesting.

"Just as we have Ghanaians here [in Limbe], there are Nigerians too. Our fans have promised us that they will storm the stadium in their numbers to cheer the team to victory."

Ghana captain Elizabeth Addo added: "We are very prepared. The Nigerians know us well and we know them too.

"We are not under pressure. It is just a normal game and we are going to have fun. Having played in Nigeria before [for River Angels], I know most of the Nigerian players and they know my abilities too.

"For us, all we need is victory. There is always a first time. Ghana have reached the final on three previous occasions and lost to Nigeria each time. Who knows? We can make history this time."

Ghana are making their ninth appearance at the competition.

PRESS BREIFING:
What they say: Nigeria vs Ghana

Florence Omagbemi (Head Coach, Nigeria):
We are looking forward to playing Ghana. Everyone is focused and all the players are intact. We take it one game at a time and we won’t underrate or overrate any team. We watched Ghana against Kenya and we are looking forward to a good match. Hopefully, we will have a good day and emerge victorious. Ghana won’t be a walkover and we will play as if it is the final. The spirit in camp is good and the players are motivated to deliver.

Gladys Nnenena Akpa (Defender, Nigeria):
We are here for a purpose. We know why we are here and we will do just that.

Yusif Basigi (Head Coach, Ghana):

News from GHANA: Black Queens clash with Super Falcons

The greatest rivalry in African women's football will be rekindled tomorrow (today) at the Bata sports Stadium Equatorial Guinea when the senior national women's team the Black Queens opens their sixth African Women's Championship (AWC) campaign against defending champions, the S.

Ghana has played second-fiddle to Nigeria since the start of the competition in 1998 and according to captain of the team Grace Adwoa Bayor this year's championship will see the end of the Falcon's dominance over her side.

'We have made it to the finals on three occasions and on all occasions we have fallen to them, but I believe our time to be crowned queen's of African football has come".

Playing in Group 'B' alongside South Africa and Tunisia, the Queen's will be looking for revenge against a Falcons side who they fell to in the finals, two years ago in Warri, Nigeria.

A Perpetual Nkwocha strike 13 minutes into the 2006 finals killed the dream of an Adwoa Bayor led Black Queens who on two previous finals -1998 and 2002 lost out on a chance to claim the diadem by 0-2 margins.

The Queen's only victory over the Falcons in the history of the AWC came during the 2002 edition when a first half goal from then captain Alberta Sackey gave Ghana a surprise 1-0 win over Nigeria in Warri.

Although the Ghanaian team has not had the best of preparations ahead of the championship, the team is brimming with confidence and has promised to revenge their 0-1 loss to the Falcons two years ago in Nigeria and even go a step further.

The18-member squad which flew out of the country last Tuesday will be missing the services of influential striker and kin-pin Anita Amankwah who could not make the team through injury.

In her absence the onus will now rest on the shoulders of inspirational captain Bayor, who is one of the two, Ghanaians who have participated in all six editions of the championship.

Despite their failure to go on a scheduled campaign tour in Germany, the team is confident of doing its best at the championship and this has been further triumphed by Coach of the side Mumuni Gamel who has brought on board some young limbs like Safia Abdul Rahman, Faisah Ibrahim and Portia Boakye from under-20 side, the Black Princesses to boost the chances of his team.

Tomorrow's match is scheduled to kick-off at 13 hours GMT.

The Queen's will next play the Bayana Bayana of South Africa on Wednesday and complete the group stage against their Tunisian counterpart next Saturday.
