Dear all,

You guys have being doing wonderful job here. I say thank you for helping one another.

I have being following this topic for some time now but this is my first time of posting a comment. My family was recently denied a Canadian visa. Reasons for refusal is "purpose of travel and travel history". Following the advice on this forum, I applied for the GCMS note and got it today. Surprisingly, the GCMS note of 24 pages pdf file that contains more of their internal codes. The main point for refusal was not still clear as the VO simply stated that
"Based on a review of the application and supporting documents and after considering the purpose of travel, travel history, financial status (earnings/savings), family ties both in Canada and homeland and the overall establishment of the applicant, I am not satisfied that the applicant is sufficiently established so as to motivate a timely departure. Refused."

About my application: I work in a bank at a middle management level. These are some of the documents submitted

* Application form
* Old passport containing used visas to UK, Dubai, France
* Current passport with valid but yet to be used US visa (the plan is to combine the trip to US and Canada)
* Hotel booking using booking.com
* Flight booking
* Employment letter dated back to 2007
* Promotion letters
* Letter of introduction from my employer indicating leave period and leave entitlement of about N2.8m
* Medical Insurance ID Card from HMO.
* Lagos State Tax clearance card
* Pension fund statement from IBTC
* Life Assurance letter from IGI
* Education support insurance for my kids from Mutual Benefit Insurance
* Statement of investments for my kids
* Mortgage letter (I took a mortgage from my bank to buy a property in Lekki). All mortgage documents included.
* Documents for landed property in Ikorodu and Ajah
* 6 months payslip
* Photocopy of staff ID Card.
* Bank statement of salary account and investment accounts worth more than N6m
* Letter of introduction from my kids' school
* However, I did not include travel itinerary but stated places we wanted to visit in the SOP letter.

Honestly, I am surprised at their refusal because I have never been refused a visa before. One thing that is very clear from the GCMS note is that they share data with the US.

Just decided to share the story of my application. I hope to reapply again when I come back from the US.

I feel your pain. The best thing to do is for you to apply for Canada visit visa when you get to US. I did same for my wife last October. The processing time in US is less than 2 week.

Good evening everyone, Please, my enquiry is about visitor visa to Canada. I have a conference to attend in Montreal in mid March 2017. I want to know if it is still feasible to get the visa within this short time frame. I hope to complete my online application next week. Also, what visa office does one address their letter from sponsor to? Is there a visa office in Nigeria? What is the minimum amount that should be in my sponsor's account? Which route is faster and more cost-effective? What general advice can you give me concerning visitor visa to Canada to avoid mistakes and refusal? I hope to hear from someone soon. Thank you. Success to all other applicants on the forum.. Cheers

How do I get affordable but good flight deals to Canada. It's only a 10 day trip, I don't want to spend a fortune on flight ticket. wink

Good evening. With paper application you may stand a better chance of getting a decision before the conference date.
Please kindly state the relationship between you and your sponsor.

I also have a financial aid award from the organisers of about 1,000 USD. Do I still stand a chance to getting the visa?

I'm a medical student (600level) at the Premier University.. I think thats the only tie I have.. no job, no assets, in various student organisations if that can pass as my responsibilities. Moreover, this conference is an annual event. I went for the last edition this year which was in Rome. Next year's conference will be in Montreal.. It is a Model United Nations Conference for university students.

Congrats Zeus! Finally! I remember when you were thinking of withdrawing the online application. Thank God it was successful.

The decision reached is that your application is successful except your passport get comma or new implicating information renders you ineligible for a Visa. You can confirm this by looking at the date your visa was issued when you receive it. It should correspond with the passport request date.

Also your status will change when they finalise the process. I posted Screenshots of the change that occurred in my account.

Abeg honour your pipo with the documents you submitted.

Thanks bro. That's extra ginger for me now. Much appreciated. I'll keep us updated.

Thank you for your response. So should I attach an SOP to the required documents to be submitted in my application? I'm thinking of applying this week or latest next week. Whom do I address the letter to?? Is there an embassy in Nigeria?
Documents I plan to submit include;
Letter of invitation from the MUN conference organisers
My bro's statement of acct and proof of relationship
Travel Itinerary
Flight and hotel booking
proof of studentship
passport biodata page
Schengen visa page with travel stamps
SOP
Visa form..
Are there other documents I need to add??
Ehen, another headache I almost forgot to mention is that I had to apply twice before my Schengen visa was approved by the Italian Consulate. My colleagues and I suffered. The first time they refused us visas on grounds that they couldnt verify the conference despite the organisers sending them multiple emails on our behalf. They finally called our private phone numbers, apologised rudely and asked that we pay another visa fee. Then, they granted us the visa. The whole essence of the story is this; will I state on canada's visa form that I have been denied a visa??(saw a question like that on the form)
The conference is a large one and every year over 3,000 students from almost 180+ countries attend it. I sincerely pray that the VO will be more reasonable than the one at the Italian Consulate. There's no money to reapply again, not in this recession.. the canadian visa processing is looking more expensive sef.

So should I include a SOP to the required documents to be submitted alongside the application? A letter of explanation should suffice.

1.Address the letter to Canadian embassy in Lagos or Abuja depending on where you are applying from.

2. Select yes to the question that asked if you have been refused a visa before then state briefly that you were issued later after Italian embassy ratified their mistake

3. You need a letter from your school permitting you to take the trip

Am I supposed to submit the documents and visa form at the vfs office? How do pay visa and biometric fees? Is it Online or at VFS
No. 3 wasnt part of the required documents but I thought of including it too.

No you have to do it yourself with little help from here and your own research.

Forget about depending on anybody to help your complete a form or some documents, if you are qualified to be issued a tourist visa you will get one.

A regular traveler today was once a first timer, so lack travel history shouldn't be a stumbling block.

The most important question is: Do you meet the requirement for tourist visa?

I will advise you apply as soon as possible.

I also see that some Nairalanders here have answered your questions. Nice! cool

But we can chat if you have any questions. Also, do let me know if you need any assistance as regards pick up or finding locations here or touring. (No charge at all. smiley)

Thank you but Im waiting on my proof of studentship from school and bank statement from sponsor.
God bless your kind soul. I will be needing help with pick up from YUL and touring. For my accommodation, I chose Samesun Montreal Center at St. Hubert street. I hope they are nice as the reviews on booking.com depicted. My conference will take place at Plais des Congressi (Convention center). Samesun is a bit far but its prices were too reasonable to overlook. 250cad for 9 nights (breakfast included). Perhaps, you might know other affordable and nice opttions close to the convention center.
