How come the balance is 51 when the total has been calculated.

Never compare "sum of balances" with "sum of expenses" !!
That's a useless practice.

Suppose you had the same 50 rupees and you spent them as given below
.......... opening balance Rs.50
expenses ........ balance
10 ....................... 40
5 ......................... 35
5 .......................... 30
10 ......................... 20
5 .......................... 15
15 .......................... 0
Simply look at the so called "sum of balances"
40+35+30+20+15 huh

.......... far above the original amount 50, are not they?

That's what the answer is saying naw... There's no way a sequentially diminishing amount will equal the original amount

(50-40)+(40-35)+(35-30)+(30-20)+(20-15)+(15-0)
