It maybe expensive, but it's worth the cost at the long run especially in Nigeria, considering the cost of fuel now. I use and inverter at home and with the little light plan bring, it gets charged and am happy at the long run I was not happy with the cost too at the long run, but now it worth the cost, unless the light spoilt or phone didn't bring light, I hardly on my gen, I can remember a gen that works everyday before now works maybe once or two like in four months.

I spent roughly 260K NGN on my 2.4KVA solar inverter. It is serving me well. No generator noise, no fuel, no maintenance, nothing.

My heart leaps in joy every time the sun shines. I complain like the people around me because moaning about the weather is a British pastime. But I'm secretly happy.

I'm gonna add two extra batteries and solar cells soon.

With an efficiency of 20%, solar electricity should well rival the conventional fossil fuel & steam driven power plants whose efficiency is between 20-30% even in combine cycle operation aside the noise, operating cost, dirt/waste it generates which constitute environment hazards.

Solar electricity is a very good clean energy.But my worries is the high cost of all the processes from procurement,installation and maintenance.Many people can not afford it...why? we are still importing the components,there are very few solar companies who can make affordable provision and thirdly we havent fully embraced the technology of solar.
Secondly we have a very weak government that doesnt look into the future.There is a solar company owned by a woman in kaduna through to out sketch of abuja.She supplies energy as pay as-you-go.She has successfully established a good business for petty traders who need light for their business.Currently she is under huge threat by some silly government policies.

In my opinion we hurriedly jumped into solar energy without counting the cost.How many research engineers do we have in solar? Do we have a place to train engineers and specialists? Do we have a sustained maintenance culture?
I know a couple of homes and businesses that use solar,trust me they are seeing hell....issues upon issues which they didnt have any slight understanding of.
Nigeria has the weather to make it work,but what about the cost?
For now we are trying to get our feet down,but if we plan towards it i think solar electricity is a huge alternative power supply that can compete with hydro and gas generation.

You did not address the issue of efficiency. Solar is comparable cost wise to coal with no pollution. Nigeria should have renewables in the mix. China adds more solar capacity every three months than Nigeria generates from the grid.
Residential systems in Nigeria cost quite a bit because of storage. However when properly done, it costs much less than owning and running a generator.

They are also three times more efficient than an equivalent generator.

The whole shiiit lasted for like 18 months (547 days)before we replaced the batteries
come to think of it,we use 1700 diesel per day for our generator that means 1100x547....601.700 naira

You had a poorly designed system. A thirty thousand naira controller will struggle to charge your batteries. And batteries that don't receive a proper charge will fail prematurely. My battery bank never goes below 24. 5 volts. That is the secret to long lasting batteries.

My batteries are over two years old. They still power my freezer 24 / 7. I pump water, iron, microwave and have fans run during the day and at night. They should last three to four more years.

If you like waste your money. All efficient street lights in Nigeria including Aso rock is powered by generator. As I type, There are 8 solar panel wasting away outside. we thought cleaning them would make thinks better, but no show. Na generator win for now.

This is how we get in trouble. There is a thread within Nairaland that can help you you.
AC will more than triple your costs. What is the power rating of each item? How many hours a day do you plan to run them?
I use flooded batteries. They require distilled water every 2 to 3 months. During the dry season the panels need cleaning. My batteries are equalized once every month.
I have lived with solar since June 2014 and I have power 24/7.

Do some homework first before you trust someone to give you a quote.

Nice write up , a strong point for use of solar power. It has largely remained an untapped and readily available source of power in Nigeria. Come to the north and you would find sufficient land for enough panels to power the north. Add that to 9months of intense sunlight, and we are well on our way to solving our power needs.
However for home panels, there are some limitations :

Since I started using solar energy, I no longer care about PHCN. The only thing my solar can not do is power my refrigerator and iron my clothes lobatan.

No just goto any electrical market or shop,ask for that specification.make sure u get a very strong battery(higher than 24v)

That's impressive, I guess it's down to the installed capacity of the solar batteries which should be directly proportional to the cost of installation.

sorry I can't help you....I only know what it is used for and how to use it.

some people think solar is about Sunshine but not really cause normal daylight, the solar system can still... The picture is, when the clouds covers the sun, then solar panel system might not work..

It will still work because all it needs is Sundays to power it....if you study geography, you would know there are still some sunrays that penetrate through the cloud, but does not have much power than the sunlight without clouds

....and don't forget solar panel can be stored.

Now you can clearly see how we are getting it all wrong.Nobody regulates the activities of these solar business men,no standards.

But wait ooo, we can actually have an off-grid system,but i doubt if those evil men will allow it work.Because many of them are enjoying the fact that we are running shortage of power supply.Now with the vast population of Nigeria,we can leverage on our God-given resources (the huge supply of sun rays) to provide good solar system.But lately i have attended several conferences and power exhibition,they are all mare gathering of business men who have very little to offer.
Tanzania is moving fast,Angola is rising and some other African countries are swiftly moving to solar.We are here reading newspapers and fighting dirty.
Even power sector is yet to get a good reform.....

The Nigerian govt. really needs someone to talk sense into them. Apart from the high cost of maintenance, getting high quality panels are the main issue, as our business men have flooded the market with inferior panels, for extremely high cost.

Solar panels, just like every household devices are of different grades, standards, qualities and prices. In India at the moment, you can get the best quality solar panels for cheap prices (not like super cheap) and use for like 2-years without any form of maintenance. Batteries inclusive.

Solar energy generations is a core business point at the moment; technologies like "Advancion" are taking over the renewables energy world by storm, with very minimal maintenance(s), done as per schedule/routine. You can practically use your panels/batteries for 5-years without doing jack! Our field guys only makes sure that dusts are removed from the panels surface once a week. These panels are made in India, and currently the best in the market.

The govt. of Nigeria is so naïve, that they have never even held a solar panel in their hands. In most parts of the world, all locals/citizen are encouraged to go solar, and you even have the advantages to connect to the national grid and make lots of money selling power to the govt. You use your power that's generated by you, and sell the remaining to the govt. through the grid. At the end of the month, you get paid.

Most Houses in the Middle East have solar panel. Power plants are shutting down. Solar plants are hot-cakes and its even quite easy to install/construct. A 200 MW "Advancion" solar power plant cost 400 Million Naira (design, build, and maintain) and our silly leaders are crying everywhere.

But then, what kind of regulations do they have In place that makes business difficult for the woman you talked about? Just curious.

Maintenance is not needed? very funny i must say..As with any mechanical or electrical appliance, PV systems require routine, periodic maintenance. System components may also need repair or replacement from time to time......So solar panels too dont need routine maintenance? inverter doesnt need maintenance? and the solar panels are not cleaned periodically?

NEEDED MAINTENANCE WORK.
1.Visual inspection of solar modules,
2.DC isolators & enclosures,
3.roof penetrations,
4. AC & DC inverter isolators,
5.Test polarity and operation of DC circuit breakers
6.Clean inverter filters where applicable
7.Inverter disconnect test (simulated mains power failure)
8.Check open circuit voltage
9.Clean solar modules on completion where practical

Hope you have learnt something

You said expensive maintenance, all the things you mentioned are not needed in a quality setup. Ever heard of Iron Edison batteries? Solarworld panels? Magnum inverters? Flexmax charge controllers? All these things I mentioned dont require regular check up except once a year, as for the solar panels, If placed on the ground it can be easily cleaned. Remember solar panels and systems are DC current based, only the inverter converts it to AC. My dear solar power has evolved...

Probably your installer didnt design your system properly, ive been using my batteries for 2years abd counting and i still only turn my gen on to pump water or iron. And N120k for a solar panel is a bit too expensive.
