i was a victim of this when i traveled with my family to the east for a wedding just last week.
multiple custom check points demanding outrightly for N1,000 settlement to avoid any drama of screening my custom papers

Foreign rice is not a prohibited item in Nigeria. You can validly import it through the ports. What then will be the basis for seizure by the customs?

Regarding checking for custom papers of vehicles on inland roads, this is not new and not peculiar to the east. They do check on western states roads too. Infact, they are permanent at Ijebu-jesha (Osun state), Akure near FUTA (ondo state) and after Ifaki (Ekiti state) but surprisingly you won't see custom check point on the 600km stretch of Lokoja - Abuja - Kaduna - Kano road

Bros, I respect your opinion on this board, don't let change that status.
The issue is direct, custom officers have nothing doing on the highways. Their statutory duties end at the borders while the Federal highway police should be allowed to man the roads.
This govt is confused on so many issues and we should stop giving them blind support.

Imagine how some people are so heartless. They think it is a tribal thing. Better shut up if you have no feelings for others. Tomorrow you blame them for asking to leave Nigeria. Please people be fair. They are going home for Christmas and they carry rice for relatives And others are going to sell but customs chose to confiscate their hard labour .
You guys continue! God is watching!

mr man, have you travelled on this route to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of this claim b4 spewing this rubbish or you think everything is about PDP vs APC.
not just customs, the number of police checks, sars, jtf, highway patrol, army and all manner of check points on se/ss roads is disheartening.

how do yo reason like this.
do you expect them to seize ALL the rice on the road when what they do is random stop and search or have you seen where every vehicle on the road is stopped and searched.

I was in PH two weeks back and it would interest you to note that there were checkpoints all the way from Enugu down to PH. Papers and all were asked and the car was thoroughly searched. I'm sure they would have confiscated what was believed to have been smuggled. And yes, there were vehicles that were confiscated on the road because they carried certain items. Peter Obi should not play the victim mentality just so he could tribalize this. It's on almost every road at this period.

Sharraaap!! Don't bring yoruba into this.
I'm proudly a Yoruba person but I don't subscribe to the idea of Customs officials setting check points on inner highways.

Did you read the report? The governor mentioned doing the right at the right place and time. Did he mention any tribe?

U must be a fool not to believed what Obi is saying. I don't know what u gworo sewing, lazy set of tribe, uneducated region, power mongers set of people take the south east & south south for.
what are u saying? What did you people have in south east that want to be taken. Obi not mentioning part of south south enroute to onitsha made me to understand is all about tribalism. So igbos are d only victim and d ones going home to celebrate christmas abi. If he is doing all dis for political reason, he should no that he can't even become VP talkless of president as long as nigeria is concern. Someone with no political base. If he has d political clout and popularity as they made us to understand let see who will be his candidate in next year anambra guber election if he will win. The pdp he went will even be difficult for him cos d likes of andy uba and co are waiting for him. Apga is been controlled by obiano and they have since fell apart.

... This is a worrisome trend. The custom should check all that at the point of entry (border) instead of mounting checkpoints on the nation's Highway thereby causing gridlock on the road that usually leads to accident, delay, mental and physical exhaustion.

The govt should look into this. We all know how porus the northern borders are but we don't see such checkpoints everywhere.

Obi should stop blackmailing the custom and allow them to do their job.

The Igbos are not the only travellers that are searched, and even if they are history must have thought the customs of what to do when they see an Igbo traveller.
