Peyronie's disease is usually caused by awkward injuries to the penis and has extremely unpleasant consequences, in particular in sexual intercourse.

What is Peyronie's disease and what causes it?
Peyronie's disease is an unpleasant bending and angulation of the erect penis due to which men cannot have sexual intercourse. Plaques or hard lumps form within the tissue (tunica albuginea) surrounding the main erectile bodies (corpora cavernosa), which is largely caused by slight injuries to the tissue. These injuries are usually a result of an accident during erection - during sexual intercourse, or one experienced while putting the penis back into the trousers when it's still in the state of erection. The injured tissue isn't capable of accumulating blood and it therefore cannot expand, which causes a curvature of the penis. Peyronie's disease is contracted by 2% of men.

What are the signs of Peyronie's disease?
The early signs of the disease are painful erections. Sometimes the pain appears before the bending. It happens that men go to sleep with a wholly healthy penis in the evening, but the next morning their sexual organ bends and angulates so much in erection that they're all of a sudden unable to have sexual intercourse.

How serious can the disease be?
In erection, the penis can be as bent as a corkscrew – this is the worst phase. On the other hand, sometimes the bending is hardly noticeable and gives no major cause for concern because it has no effect on the man’s ability to have sexual intercourse.

How can we treat Peyronie's disease?
The pain and bending caused by Peyronie's disease in its mildest form heal without any treatment within approximately two or three months. Still, the bending of the penis is largely treated with injections into the plaques. Vitamin E tablets and a cream, prescribed by a physician, are also effective. In some cases, the affected tissue is removed surgically, which can lead to complications. For instance, as a result of the surgical operation, men can develop erectile dysfunction. In very rare cases, insertion of a prosthesis is required. For most patients, however, this is just a routine procedure after which they can leave the hospital the same day, and their sexual organ starts to function normally within 6 to 8 weeks.

It's recommended that in any stage of the disease you see your personal physician to refer you to a urologist who will be able to help you heal this inconvenient condition with expert knowledge.
