I parked amongst parked trailers.

A suya man directed me to a man who was to take me to an hotel. I kept telling him 'an hotel not brothel o', because of the footpaths we kept trailing. Of course, it was his own 'apartment' -ile aberewo, that he took me to! I thanked him and told him no.

Went back to my car and told the suya man. He showed me all the people lying by the trucks. Some on mats and some on blanks. He said why was I looking for accommodation when I had a fine car. I insisted. He told me to drive backwards and turn into the town. I did. Saw the signpost to a guest inn and followed. The couple I met outside told me it was filled. They told me there are just 2 more hotels in the town: one toward Mokwa, the other toward Kaduna.

I drove back to the Suya spot. Bought suya. Bought 2 bottles of coke and emptied both into my water-bottle. Bought one bag of cold pure-water. Went back to my car and helped myself to some meal of bread (bought in Ilorin around Oko-Olowo area) and suya.

I slept off.

That should be about 12am.

Woke up 2.08am.

Reclined my seat properly and wound down the glasses some more.

Sleep. Round 2.

Finally woke up by 5.18am. Didnt like that. I'd hoped to wake earlier. but not bad.

Said some prayers. Checked my fluids. Ok. Tyres? Ok. Physical examination round and beneath the car. All ok.

Restart time: 5.34am.

6.51am. Birnin Gwari!
I just realissed that the town where I passed the night was not Birnin Gwari as I thought. It was Tegina!

Sunrise from 'my' North.

Risky move!

Sleeping on the road is very risky.

I would have simply retired to the nearest hotel at 7pm and continue my road trip the following morning.

Kaduna at last!

8.40am

Top up fuel at NNPC Mega Station. N3,000.

Got to the beautiful roundabout and wanted to take pictures. Discovered that the phone was dead. Pictures of NDA signboard, Water Corporation tower, and Agric House I took were all gone. 'Abeg, I was too tired to care' - in retrospect, it is painful.

Got to Kawo Motorpark overhead bridge and phone was still booting... Na hin kno o.

One of the reasons I did this was because I am beginning to sense that my youth is leaving me, and I am doing less of these trips these days. Wife and children to worry about. Work and siblings to lie about. And of course, loads of excuses to not ride the road.

Well, take tissue. It does a good job at cleaning than the kerchief. wink wink wink

Ran into a ditch - pothole where a trailer-load of tomatoes had fallen shortly before getting into Kaduna. Stopped to do physical inspection and saw that my rear bumper clip to the driver side of car had torn off.

There was also a small leak from the transmission pan.

So, I perforated the bumper and aided the brace with a copper wire.

Checked the transmission oil level, still ok.

Now in Kaduna, after the Kawo Motor Park, stopped to check the oil again, Very ok. Leak not bad. I also had some confidence that if push comes to shove, I would be topping the oil up, since I carried a spare 1-ltr gallon.

Parked to enquire where Samaru was.

Called the groom - my friend, told me to 'come over to the Church joor', as the wedding had already commenced.

So after the party, went to the Guest House, and did a thorough bath.

One of the friends and I went to town and got a mech to help fix the leaking pan.

Transmission oil drained. Pan removed and petrol-washed. Mech said it was the seal that burnt off and we had to replace it.

Told the 3 guys (one was to drop at Kaduna) who intended to follow me back to Lagos that take-off time tomorrow would be 5.15am max.

Got back to the guest house and crashed! As in, crashed. And the Zaria cold was just perfect for me.

Returned to Lagos via same route the following day Sunday, 18-Dec-2016.

Thank God Almighty for journey mercies.

No hitch: Not even a flat.

Left Zaria 6 am dot.

Got to Lagos past 8pm. An hour plus lost to traffic around Shagamu Redemption Camp exchange courtesy of Julius Berger's poor road traffic diversions/management.

Got home. Parked car. 9.05pm

The last pix (side-view of car in my compound) was taken the following morning.

Review.

Active Hours - Trip to: 17 hours (11am to 11pm=12hrs; 5am to 10am=5hrs; 12hrs+5hrs=17hrs)

Active Hours - Trip fro: 14hrs (6am to 9pm=15hrs minus food time in Jebba and diversion into Ilorin{say 1hr cumulative])

Gross Road Hours: 37hrs (23hrs+14hrs)

Odometre reading as at Departure from Lagos: 264, 626mi

Odometre reading as at return to Lagos: 265,720mi

Total Miles covered: 1,094mi (1,750km)

Total petrol bought: NGN31,500

Total fuel consumed: apx 220 litres

Car maintenance required after trip: Brake-pads are worn (changed today). There's a squeak in the arms whenever I turn, I suspect the upper arms' bushings. That one na afta Xmas be that.

Regrets: The most probable thing would be to travel with company as my return leg was much fun with the two guys. Too, start earlier. Three, ultimately, there are no regrets!

Commentary: I push myself hard - very hard but am honest about my limits. I am some little DIY guy and this helps my confidence. I think I am very brave and repose a lot of confidence in my car. I do my best for my cars and always ready them for cold-calls. True, they rarely fail me. My wife is also a great fan and this inspires and checks me.

Above all, I trust God.

Thank you for your time ... and data.

All pictures, excluding few, are drive-by shots from my phone, which also helped me to record the location and time those shots were taken.

As for harassment, it is usually from the FRSC guys from Bodesaadu to Mokwa - and there are lots of them on that axis. Those guys are worst. You find all manner of traffic offenses from public taxis with 3 passengers and driver in front, reckless overloading, nobody wears the seatbelt, etc, but they are more interested with the cars with Lagos plate numbers.

While they are haranguing you, they will even be hailing those public transporters. Good manners is alien to them. Well sha, I get their medicine for hand now.

But trust me when I say police is your friend. The police are most likely to return good gestures, have fine sense of humour, interactive and professional. From the Mobile force, Fed/State Highway Patrol, Antiterror Squad, Bomb Squad, Regular police, just know that they are friendly but know what they are doing and would appreciate a token from you.

Soldiers: No comment. I never get another job.
