The British courted Ojukwu like a desperate groom on bended knee. The British had come prepared for their meeting. They knew from centuries of experience of coastal trading in the Niger Delta that "big Men" had to be presented with befitting gifts to "oil" any negotiations They came with two large trunks out of which first came a dozen bottles of the finest 21 year aged Glenfiddich Scotch Whisky and craftily insisted on a toast to the health of Ojukwu ,Another to the health of King George and then perhaps another to the men fighting the war but Ojukwu was not having any of that. Ojukwu found the hats very fascinating . The Chritmas hats particularly because of the little circular decorative mirrors. Macaulay, the envoy, a Scotsman from Kilmarnock found them quite tacky but quickly sensed they were a hit with the Eboe chief. " These come in many colors" he offered . "You have them plenty" Ojukwu inquired mildly. Macaulay smiled his smooth oily smile. Years of dealing with Eboes had equipped him to deal with questions just like these. "Oh no. we have the cloth in many colors but the hats with mirrors they are very special. If we made them in other colors they would be a limited edition just for you sir" He bowed. This of course what music to Ojukwu's ears ,he could imagine his triumphs at various ceremonies back in Nnewi with his exclusive Limited Edition hats. Im a proud owner of the book. The British authorities did ask Sir Louis Ojukwu for the use of his fleet of Trucks at aid the second World war effort and he agreed. After the war ended in 1945, the British did not forget Sir Ojukwus sacrifice. They gave him a KBE (Knight of the British Empire) and pushed several post war contracts his way.
