They are rejecting it because the can't afford to pay for it.
As of now, the Minister of Power is a more or less a ceremonial post because there's really nothing the power minister can do to the gencos and discos since they are private entities.
Sorry have to disagree. Doesn't his office still have power to regulate this companies.

Is any consumer rejecting the power?? They will definitely get their money back I presume.

But Fashola is the regulator. You cant just excuse him that he is a sitting duck.

Gullible we are not!!

Why the modus operandi of this government is just propaganda and blame.
Once there is an outcry due to the despicable state of power all over the country, they come up with the lies ascribing that power was produced but not supplied, just anything to shift the focus from their gross incompetence and negligence.

What is the work and responsibility of the Ministry of Power?....abeg make una do your jobs and stop misleading people trying to garner sympathy....it's your job to ensure Power (which includes planning, production, supply, delivery and regulation).....

Stop masking incompetence with lies and propaganda of shifting blame....own up to your responsibilities and deliver a better standard of living for your citizenry!.

Something is definitely wrong somewhere with the power administration and management in this country.

You can regulate, but you can't force, if you decide to force, they can decide to take down a line for maintenance that would last for months, what then would Fashola do? Tell them they can't do maintenance?

fashola should please resign from power, just face works I believe government has no need for housing program it should be left for state and local government, central government don't go around building houses, it will be marred with fraud, or PMB should appoint a sound industry player in power to be his minister of state, NERC is another problem.

Actually the power companies have been sold, so production and delivery are not in the hands of the power minister anymore, he's work is more of regulation. You should keep up to date with things happening in the country.

There's nothing wrong. The industry is just maturing and I commend the DISCOS for flying an independent kite. Hopefully they will move to the next stage of diversifying their power purchase from Transysco and open up the whole market to whoever can supply them power and a favourable price to them which includes the general public.

Rejection means one or two things. Either the economics isn't right or the technical package isn't. Why will I buy power if I cannot make money selling it. Is that not a debt which will sooner or later destroy the whole industry. We all know that three of the biggest challenges faced today are: low electricity prices, poor transmission and distribution infrastructure and electricty theft and until these can be adequately addressed and surmounted, DISCOS will have no alternative than to buy only what they can sell and when they can sell to make a profit. This is purely business and if government as a whole operated like this, we will not be in the mess we face today.

Eight power firms reject 1,337MWH despite poor supply

Eight power distribution companies rejected 1,336.75 megawatts-hour of electricity, representing 19 per cent of the total quantum of power supplied to them by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Industry data obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday showed that Kaduna, Eko, Jos, Yola, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Ibadan and Benin Discos rejected the 1,336.75MWH of power in the third quarter of this year, despite the instability in the supply of electricity across the country.

Specifically, in the month of July, a total of 318.83MWH, which was three per cent of the total energy delivered to the Discos, was rejected by four of the firms.

In July, the Kaduna Disco’s rejection of 132.99MWH made it the highest in the month. The Eko Disco rejected 67.46MWH; Jos, 63.05MWH; while the Yola Disco rejected 55.33MWH.

In the same month, the Port Harcourt Disco took in the highest quantum of power at 441.43MWH; Kano accepted 397MWH; while the Enugu Disco collected 302.49MWH.

In August, there was an increase in load rejection by the distribution companies to the tune of 541.56MWH, which was four per cent of the total energy delivered to them as against the 318.83MWH delivered in the previous month.

The Port Harcourt Disco rejected the most quantum of power with a total of 239.88MWH, followed by the Eko Disco with 134.8MWH.

In the month under review, five Discos took excess load beyond their Multi-Year Tariff Order allocation to the tune of 187.21MWH. The Abuja Disco took the most, with 132.81MWH; followed by the Kaduna Disco, with 23.21MWH; Ibadan, 16.24MWH; and Enugu, 12.42MWH.

Further analysis showed that September saw the rejection of 476.36MW, representing 12 per cent of the total energy delivered to the Discos. It was, therefore, the highest load rejection in the quarter.

The Abuja Disco rejected 94.72MWH, followed closely by Port Harcourt, with 92.35MWH; Ibadan was next with 67.14MWH; and the Benin Disco turned down 46.40MWH.

Among all the Discos, only Kaduna accepted power beyond its MYTO allocation, taking in 65.96MWH in excess of its MYTO allocation.

Earlier this year, the Managing Director, TCN, Abubarkar Atiku, told journalists in Abuja that consumers were not able to benefit optimally from the supply of electricity because the distribution companies were rejecting the loads allocated to them to avoid paying for the power.

Atiku had said, “On the issue of rejecting load, I will say yes; it is still happening. I don’t want to mention the distribution companies that are guilty, but they know themselves. Most of them are load-shedding 11 feeders to two-three hours.

“This is simply because they cannot pay to the market operator or to the system the invoice that is given to them that they consume. So, they use that technique or method to deny customers power.”

However, the Association of Nigeria Electricity Distributors, an umbrella body for the Discos, said, “In view of the dire need for generation, as well as the generation thresholds in the Discos’ tariffs, which constitute the basis of their revenue recovery, it is inconceivable to think that any Disco would load-shed as described, thereby diminishing its revenue prospects and alienating its customers.”

But that is the nature of the business. They are already aware of this before putting their hands, if there are shortfalls in their revenue, they can approach the banks and then become a little more aggressive in their approach to get their money.

They themselves insisted that Maximum demand users should operate only on post paid basis. And this is where the bulk of their revenue comes from.

Consumers sabotaging the collective efforts of Disco, Transysco and Genco.

If consumers don't pay Discos, Discos can't pay Transysco or rather reject allocations, and with this Transysco can't pay Genco.

it all starts from Nigerians - consumers.

We should go back to PHCN. Simple. All this excuses are very silly ones. The truth is that this discos were sold to family and friends, political associates and the likes, instead of competent firms who are experienced. Some of the owners of these discos are actually major importers of Generators and petroleum products.

There is no need to panic. It takes good idea to manage the DISCOs. The FG should partition the area that each DISCO will manage according to their capacity. Example, the DISCO that has the capacity to manage 200sqm should be allowed to manage that portion, same goes to all the registered DISCOs. At the end we know how many Sqm of area that is without DISCO coverage, with this area, FG can outsource for more DISCOs. The problem initiated by the unbundling was giving private sector more than they can chew. That is why Nigeria needs people who are creative and the FG have reliance on their ability to carry out their duties without meddling.

If consumers bypass prepaid meter, it is the Discos's fault. What stopped them from deploying a more robust technology to check prepaid meter bypassing?

It is good for them to assert their independence, but you must acknowledge that Discos also inflate their estimation. If we go through the option that the economics is not right, then they are being fraudulent with their approach to estimation despite turning down supply.
