The plan to raise the duties which was first contemplated by former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala under the immediate past administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan had remained on the drawing board due to Jonathan’s loss of the presidential election to the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and the consequent change of officials between the former administration and the current one. cool

Yes, but they did not budget 100m for kitchen upgrade. Money would have been used for something else.

So according to Buhari sugar and salt are luxury item and duty on their importation has increased from 10% to 70%.

Expect serious increase for sugar and salt

Small fishing boats and both engines shouldn't be included. They are for commercial purposes and making them relatively affordable and available will make a great difference in smallhold fishing sector in Nigeria.

You cannot spur local production without tackling the root cause of lack of production in this country. The cost of producing a pin in Nigeria is 10 times that of China and that is why import is favorable for the masses at the moment.

The govt should first of all solve the power problem. You don't expect companies to produce using diesel and prices of local goods not be expensive.
The key to unlock our local production capacity is solving our power problems and rail transport system and not this stupid tariff increases, it will only increase hardship to Nigerians.

This is commendable. I pray they also raise the tax of those mansions to raise funds for the poor masses.

This is a great suggestion. If this government is sincere about wealth redistribution, they should start by levying a property tax on unoccupied property and undeveloped land. The amount doesn't have to be sooo much because the revenue base is very high.

Even if the tax of the mansions is raised ,the benefit is still going back to the same owners of the mansions. They are everywhere. They are the ones in the helm of affairs of this nation. The truth is you can't rid them with tax, but it's only revolution that can.

Powerful analysis you have got there. It's so true. But is it that none of the president advisers can think this way, or even the so called president. Why do we have all incompetent elements as our leaders for God sake!
This country is in a mess.

Naijiriya!! If this is to be done, the common man is the most important, tariffs on luxury products should be raised first, and then instead of buying luxury items outrightly, rich people will invest in the country, when they start doing that, and d common man is more stable u increase tariff on other products on a scale of importance to the common man. taxes should be paid on cars worth over 5 million, residential houses worth over 15 million should be taxed, and the country will gradually stabilise, not this policy aimed at totally crushing the common man. like if u agree.

You should ask yourself that question first. And if you can't really say or describe how revolution experience feels, I suggest you go read histories of countries that underwent revolutions. You have all the resources over the internet. Okay. Because I don't seem to have a grasp of the reason behind what seem to me like a foolish and rhetorical question you just asked .!

No hard feelings at all. We are on the same page and I want to tell you that the revolution have already started. We have laid the foundation. Can I pm you to tell you more about the revolution that's already in the offing? We have gone beyond online rantings and indiscriminate protests that has no ideology, background, mission and vision to achieve.

NOI held off because a policy like this in an election year would not be palatable to the voting masses. You should go to Youtube and hear her talk about what needs to be done by govt, irrespective of who wins the elections of 2015, to shore up the revenue losses from crude oil. A new tax regime was key on her agenda.

NOI took a political decision, not an economic one. Plus, government is a continuum.

So, this is war on the upper class, right ? If my fantasy is yatch and supercars, I will fire most of my staff and save their salaries to cover the difference in taxes as a pay back to this poverty-manufacturing government. So govt will have to contend with their poverty or the impending rise in crime rate.

Why would a goverrnment focus on impoverishing the citizens ? Is it a crime to be rich or to desire luxury products produced by real countries and not some failed sub-saharan oil dependent tribal contraption ?
