Wrong. This submission stands logic on its head
So why is it hard to get a prepaid meter in Nigeria? If the disco's were to gain from metering customers, why are they not in a rush to do that?

I just dont understand. Some people are alleging that it is because they will still make their money from estimated bills. And they in turn will not pay for the rejected power.
Perfect analyses!

[s]I really don't understand all these dumb excuses made by people on behalf of incompetent clowns simply because a reversal or whatever will be a slap to an administration they all supported.
I mean do u invest in business u have not done a feasibility study about? One of them is claiming accumulated debts over the years, please were they alseep when they signed to become a disco? Enough of this foolish, silly excuses by Discos and their bogus supporters(for obvious reasons). The main aim of privatisation is to improve power, not for them to reject power. PHCN was working better with lower tarrifs. The ony difference i have seen is some phantom packaging by the discos. I cal a spade a spade nor a shovel![/s]
You are just typing nonsense. You aren't even ashamed that you are one of those parasites sabotaging the system with free energy consumption.

When you start paying your bills as a man we can now talk on an equal footing.

Mynd44, OAM4J, Lalasticlala please come and see this interesting report. Discos are turning down power supply despite that people are eagerly and prayerfully waiting to receive such electricity.

Something is definitely wrong somewhere with the power administration and management in this country.
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and PDP clearly laid this foundation which I accept even if no wailer is laying claims to it.

They cluelessly or rather "cluefully" sold our common heritage to their ineffectual cronies in the name of privatisation.

The discos are owed huge amounts, thanks to parasites like you gaining from such sabotage.

The discos are also running at a huge loss from entitled folks like you who feel they shouldn't be paying for their energy needs citing silly reasons just like you do.

You practically pay about N10 naira per month on electricity, while staying in a free quarters but yet will seek to denigrate Nigerians seeking to hold their leaders accountable over their tax used in taking care of your needs without much in return.

Big fat lie!! These Discos keeping seeking excuses to cover up their lapses. When was this survey done? And where are the facts? So why not simply disconnect them, if you discover that they have by-passed their meters? Or even get them arrested and prosecuted? shocked

Abujaexpress:
If consumers bypass prepaid meter, it is the Discos's fault. What stopped them from deploying a more robust technology to check prepaid meter bypassing?
Thank you, jare! sad You don talk am well! Let the Discos seek for an answer to this question!

agabusta:
You are right on that. Some of them are already following this suggestion of yours. The prepaid metre installed in my house has a transmitter that transmit all activities on it directly to Eko Electricity Distribution company. Even if the cover is opened, a light comes up on its indoor unit and this is also transmitted to their office. They also installed the device high up an electricity pole. and covered the input and output cables to some extent. And stated that any tampering to the input and output cables will be transmitted to their office. I was even surprised to see that the meter uses a sim card.

This coupled with frequent inspections will reduce electricity theft to some extent. Unless there is sabotage on the part of their employees
Thank you, o jare! wink You have just answered the question on the kind of 'robust technology' that can be deployed to check electricity theft. This method may not be perfect, but it is a start. If the same devices or practice, can be deployed across board by other Discos to deter electricity thieves, am sure there would be some level of improvement. undecided

PentiumPro:
The reason is simple.
Any Disco that cannot reasonably and effectively metered the electricity it distributes will not be able to pay the Gencos and will just keep accumulating debt. The issue is worsened now with the fact that 1, estimated billing is becoming difficult to collect, 2, it's almost now illegal to disconnect owning customers.
The ultimate solution is to METERED ALL ELECTRICITY CONSUMERS.. Anything outside that will not work
You forgot to add that even when consumers pay for pre-paid meters, it takes them months to get it. And when those pre-paid meters get faulty, the Discos turn a blind eye and deaf ears to pleas made by consumers, who beg them to fix it. angry

Outrageous bills most times to augment what's lost as a result of atc&c loss - mostly from consumers, Nigerians.

There is never a smoke without a fire.

You have a neighbour who uses over N10,000 worth of electricity per month, but pays a token of N2,000 due to bypassing. Where do you think the 8k dey?

Report that your neighbour, and the corrupt "NEPA" man who helped with the connection.
So is it right to punish the innocent, for the sins of the guilty? shocked The Discos do not realise that this method breeds resentment in the hearts and minds of those who receive such outrageous bills, especially when it is so easy to tell that the power supply they have received in a particular month is NOT commensurate with the bills, they have been given. sad So of course, they might decide not to pay or to challenge such bills. sad

This is how we were given a bill of almost 65,000 naira in my family house on the mainland once, and I went to Eko Disco office to lodge a complaint. Before then, the average monthly bill was like 7k - 8k. And there was nobody living in the building except a security guard/caretaker. The Marketing Manager admitted clearly that they made an error in their calculation of the estimated bill, but told me flatly there was nothing they could do about it. I should just pay the bill. undecided

Well since I am not a politician or a Naira-bet pools agent with excess cash, I declined. They disconnected power from the house for over 8 months, and I ignored them. There was no one living there anyway, just a caretaker.

The bulk of the bills are actually owed by govt agencies, parastatals, ministries, barracks etc. And those are the consumers the Discos should focus attention on, in order to retrieve their money. Residential customers do not owe the Discos as much as govt agencies do. sad

Rejecting power is a form of corruption because the discos find a way to make the consumers pay for what they (discos) haven't earned through estimated bills. This is where government must come in and sanction erring discos. I believe with prepaid digital meters this corruption can be controlled.

Is either you are for them, or you work with them. All the DISCOS know exactly what they are doing. In a situation where you give a consumer assumed bill when he/she has a metre is totally unacceptable.

When the different DISCOs started issuing out prepaid metres through their marketers and the field workers, both the marketers and the field workers noticed that with time, there will be no need for the plenty field workers and marketers. They introduced some consumers on how to by-pass the metres, so that at anytime, there will still be need for physical presence of fieldworkers for either fault resolution or monitoring.

Until they give one what one has consumed according to the metre reading, Nigerians will always by-pass.
Report those marketers.

Make a video of them as evidence to back up your claim.

Many have been dismissed, and some imprisoned, but we need Nigerians to support the Discos to flush out corruption.

The company bills based on what marketers' meter readings. Some marketers wouldn't go on field work to take readings, but making estimated readings and you will definitely get estimated billings.

What to do;

1. Always monitor what you consume monthly with screenshots.

2. Have your copies of paid bills.

3. Know the marketer responsible for your cluster.

4. When there is any discrepancy, write the head Disco office in your area, and copy the Area Manager, Senior Manager (Distribution), Head Marketer and OMS.

With your evidence, you can move mountain when you are being disconnected for not paying for what you never consumed.

Discos are having major challenge with the marketers though.

Is your house metered?

I hope you were able to record what the Marketing Manager said. He admitted they made a mistake, and still expects you to pay up.

He must have been conniving with his field marketers to rip people off.

Ask your security guard if the marketers do come around to take meter readings monthly.
