It's lack of education,I was having the same problem with my daughter as well and her teacher told me to allow all the kids in her class to round her up to sing for her for 2-3 days,infact she stopped after the second day.
I realised children hate to be embarrased

My daughter is about 7 seven years old, she still sucks her thumbs which has not prevented her from being the best in her class since her nursery school days.
I detest the act myself but have to learn to live with it after all efforts to stop her from infancy failed through covering her hands with socks and gloves, at the age of 3 months she started pulling out the socks herself (very frustrating indeed but I also marveled at her ability to do that at that age ) now she has learnt not to suck when she is in the school or outside, but the moment she enters the confines of the house she enjoys herself with it.

I had to do a little research about how to stop her but most respondents said it is a form of soothing balm when she is stressed and she will only stop with age and some peer pressure but no form of force should be applied like this woman has done ignorantly and regretfully.
Some parents have gone to the extent of cutting their infants hands with razor blade. Very bad!

My advise to parents whose kids suck and it irritates them is not to apply any form of force, burn their hands or beat them but rather teach them to always remember to wash their hands clean as they are prone to swallowing dirts from dirty hands which may lead to infections and stomach-ache and then learn to live with it like me till the stop naturally.
They will naturally stop with age and peer pressure but even some continue till adulthood but it has no mental effect on them except that the dentition could be a bit impacted in very few cases.
