In english?
In international politics, gunboat diplomacy (or "Big Stick ideology" in U.S. history) refers to the pursuit of foreign policy objectives with the aid of conspicuous displays of naval power—implying or constituting a direct threat of warfare, should terms not be agreeable to the superior force.[1]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunboat_diplomacy

Grey Ambassador is the term used to describe a Naval vessel being used in a diplomatic role. Grey because of the hull as well as the ambiguous implications of using a military vessel for diplomacy.

Senegal sends troop to gambia border hours before the end of Jammeh's mandate

Columns of Senegalese troops moved to the Gambian border on Wednesday, threatening military action against President Yahya Jammeh, who has refused to accept a December election defeat, military sources and residents of towns near the border said.

"We are heading towards there," one military source in Dakar told Reuters. "We are very seriously preparing ourselves."

Residents of the towns of Diouloulou and Ziguinchor in southern Senegal reported troop movements towards the Gambian frontier from midnight onwards.

"Since early morning there have been hundreds of Senegalese soldiers heading in trucks towards the border with The Gambia," one source in Ziguinchor said.

NAF DEPLOYS TO SENEGAL TO ENFORCE ECOWAS MANDATE IN THE GAMBIA

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed to Senegal as part of Nigerian contingent of Economic Community of West African States Military Intervention in Gambia (ECOMIG) – a standby force tasked by ECOWAS Heads of State to enforce the December 1, 2016 election mandate in the The Gambia. The NAF today moved a contingent of 200 men and air assets comprising fighter jets, transport aircraft, Light Utility Helicopter as well as Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft to Dakar from where it is expected to operate into Gambia. The deployment is also to forestall hostilities or breakdown of law and order that may result from the current political impasse in The Gambia.

Addressing the contingent before departure, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar urged the troops to maintain discipline and be professional in their conduct. Reminding them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria, the CAS stated that no act of indiscipline by the contingent would be tolerated. The contingent, led by Air Cdre Tajudeen Yusuf, was airlifted this morning from 117 Air Combat Training Group Kainji. Other troop contributing countries include Senegal, Ghana and countries within the sub-region.

The mobilisation is stellar. What the military has done is not to make noise, but quietly get to work. Before we could spell Tayo, NNS Unity was already close to the Ivory Coast, NAF had mobilised and 800 troops were on standby.

The whole deployment is beautiful.

Nigeria has so far deployed,

- NNS Unity

- 1 x Beechcraft ISR plane

- 2 x Alpha jets light attack jets

- 1 x Agusta A109 LUH

- 3 x C-130

- 200 ground troops from the Air Force

- 800 Soldiers on standby.

The Nigerians are not coming, they have actually arrived!!

'Oya Jammeh come and be going ' grin

All this deployment are NAF assets, wouldn't the army send in ground troops IFV's and MBT etc

I guess NA personnel will be air lifted by NAF while equipment would go via merchant shipping.

this insurgency has really thought NAF the importance of proper ISR, I'm pretty sure 2 more C-130 will join in on the logistics.
the navy can also contribute troops.

All this rubbish happening because a man who has spent 22 years in power simply refused to go. Even Nigeria offered him asylum. He probably would have been living like a boss in beautiful Calabar by now.

All those tourists and thier dollars leaving the country.

The Americans and British might get involved.

Mercenaries in Banjul from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Casamance, according to Gambian newspaper.

Following recent newspaper reports that alleged Liberian mercenaries, led by former President Charles Taylor's elite security commander Benjamin Yeaten, resurfaced in The Gambia, the Freedom newspaper has reported yet another recruitment of rebels by President Yahya Jammeh. Freedom newspaper is Gambia's premier online newspaper.

It has reported that Jammeh has assembled mercenaries from former war-ravaged West African nations--mainly from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, and the Southern Province of Casamance in Senegal. This is the area of Senegal south of The Gambia including the Casamance River that has witnessed years of turmoil as rebels there are seeking for independence from Senegal. Both Liberia and Sierra Leone recorded bitter civil wars, with the Liberian conflict starting as an internal crisis from 1989, and lasting until 2003. The conflict eventually led to the involvement of the ECOWAS and the United Nations Mission to Liberia.

In Sierra Leone, the civil war began on March 23, 1991 by the Revolutionary United Front rebels, with support from the special forces of Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia.

However, according to the latest edition of the Freedom newspaper, President Jammeh is currently housing rebels from Casamance and elsewhere across the West African sub-region in preparation for a possible military showdown with the proposed Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) force recently formed to help unseat him from power.

The decision follows Jammeh's refusal to respect the wishes and aspirations of the Gambian people in electing Adama Barrow, a real estate developer, as the country's next President, the Freedom newspaper has said.

The rebels, according to the paper, have been deployed in various security facilities across the country, especially at the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) based in Kanifing. They have reportedly been issued with army uniforms, combat gears, and weapons to gear up for a possible showdown.

The paper alleges that General Saul Badjie, the Commander of the Republican Guards, and also a close confidant of Jammeh, yesterday distributed over 1,733 uniforms to the arriving rebels, whose presence are being treated as top secret in Banjul. Some of the rebels can barely speak, or write English, the paper reported, adding that they speak French and other local West African dialects different from the ones spoken in The Gambia.

Their mission is to help keep Jammeh in power and to also suppress any military intervention coming from ECOWAS, the paper said quoting highly placed sources.

A top security chief close to Jammeh told the Freedom newspaper that the President is determined to wage a war in the country before his inevitable fall.

"Jammeh is not going to vacate the presidency without bloodshed. All indications suggest that he is ready for war. The rebels are here. The end game for Jammeh is going to be bloody. He has nowhere to go. He wants to commit genocide before the end of his rule. General Saul Badjie distributed the uniforms to the arriving rebels. They are here," said our (Freedom newspaper) source at the State House.

I disagree with a military intervention in Gambia. I believe a political settlement should have been reached.

However from a purely military stand point, Nigeria's deployment is commendable. Especially when you consider the Mali debacle in 2013, when Nigeria was very slow to respond.

Exactly, now we don't go anywhere without our ISR platforms. The deployment is kinda similar to what we had in Mali.

In Mali we deployed.

- 1 x ATR-42 ISR plane
- 2 x MI-24v
- 2 x Alpha jets
- 1 x C-130
- 1 x G-222

This makes me proud to be a Nigerian. A battalion from the Army is probably next in line for deployment. How possible will it be to airlift our T-72AV MBTs?
