I grew up in the south east thinking that the military/police checkpoints are standard security measures essentially needed to maintain peace in any given society. By this , i mean that by the time i graduated from the university, i have so much gotten used to having police check points around, that when i don't see them, impulsively, i start to feel like that place has got 'no security' and the inhabitants are at the beck and call of hoodlums, even if there is a police post nearby..., then youth service in Kano at the height of the shariah riots in 2000, and from Abuja to kano, i met about only 2 or 3 military checkpoints around kaduna-Zaria, ..,ad-hoc measures put in place aftermath of the bloody riots that gulped the lives of thousands just few weeks back. That number of checkpoints, is what you will find within 4 poles in one eastern road.

The police check-points in the east were imposed in the form they are today immediately after the war. They are supposed to have been removed few months after or at worst within a year, but somehow the series of apartheid regimes we have had at the federal level have made them a permanent feature on eastern roads to our collective pain. Sometime in the mid 2000s, it got worse to the extent that mobile police men were almost manning check-points like every '2 poles', each check-point collecting bribes for all sorts reasons, from unfortunate motorists while practically bringing the commercial activities in this area to a standstill. Lots of drivers and motorists have been killed over arguments with overzealous security agencies, most times over refusal to pay bribes.

It is also interesting to note that having become a permanent feature in the east, we started seeing the practice slowly being exported to some parts of the country by disgruntled security agents who couldn't make as much as they did from bribes on the roads after being posted out of the east. In-fact there were stories of police men and officers actually paying bribes to be posted to the east.., to such places as Onitsha, in order to go and "hammer". Onitsha itself has commercially deteriorated under the enormous weight of these check-points as traders from such places as Cameroun and other African countries that used to visit now shy away because of the fear of being rounded up by a vindictive police demanding for "invoice and receipts" or face paying heavy bribes/detention. It is insane.

You lot rush in to any southeast thread to trivialise serious questions like the op asked. A child that grew up in the southeast will be calm and casual about a lot of things until he ventures out of the zone either during youth service or search for job to other region and then the reality hits him on the face. He doesn't need any body to tell him what he observed by himself. And its not victim mentality because most of us did not see the war but the Nigeria state foolishly keep on reenacting the war scenario in the mind of highly impressionable youth. Do you like the status quo in this country? We are all holding ourselves down. Let truth and justice reign.
