Amidst Nigerian youths, it is widely known that tramadol gives a high excitement when taken with alcohol or combine with any drug to achieve a particular purpose, be it hard work or when having sex. The drug has been so abused that some youths are now addicted to the drug. Belonging to the class of opioids it is possible for the drug to increase the neurological function of the brain thereby bringing about its functions.
Tramadol is a medication that is used to treat moderate to severe pain experience in a person. The drug binds to the opioid receptor and also inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. There are many different forms and brands of tramadol.
The FDA is warning about the safety risk associated with the class of opioids which are interactions with other medications, decreased sex hormone levels, and problems with the adrenal glands. Serotonin syndrome, a central nervous system disorder has been associated with the interactions of opioids with antidepressants and migraine medicines. It was also discovered that continuous taking of opioids decrease the amounts of hormone, cortisol which helps the body respond to stress. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands.( http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm489676.htm?source=govdelivery&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ).
The drug has been associated with side effects like dizziness, weakness, sleepiness, shaking, constipation, diarrhea, etc. and the addiction can lead to serious side effects associated with other opioids like morphine which is narcotic in the real sense. The drug is normally eliminated by the liver and the metabolites are eliminated by the kidneys (http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=cabccc8a-6f9f-414c-93f0-6dec331ed74b ). The enzyme serum aminotransferase levels can be elevated in patients taking high doses of tramadol thereby signaling liver damage. Respiratory arrest and acute liver failure can also be caused by the overdose of tramadol.
Nigeria is a country whereby going to doctor for a check-up is not a norm. Many lives have been lost to self-medication being practiced in our land. Youths should be sensitized and be made to understand the adverse side effects associated with this drug and to curb the abuse in the future.
This is not to abuse anyone but to make us understand that abuse of any drug is bad and can have serious consequences.
