Which kind of human being carries out a welding job (most likely unassessed for safety) round the vicinity of a Petrol Station? Na wa ooooo. Following simple safety precautions could have avoided this ugly incident.

How can one carry out welding in a gas station without following established safety guidelines to the letter?

Our public utilities system managers in Nigeria are so incompetent. The Ogun State Fire Service headquarters is less than five (5) minutes drive from the scene of this explosion, I believe if they were proactive enough, the damage could have been lesser. May God protect us all.

A terrible gas explosion today in Adigbe area in Abeokuta, Ogun State left everybody speechless. The mayhem was so disastrous that many wonder how the amount of damage was done. Two persons were confirmed dead on the spot while several others were injured.

The sad incident occurred in the morning today being Thursday 26th January 2017 and seven people were also injured. The explosion occurred at about 11:00 a.m. when a welder was carrying out a repair work at RAB Engineering Petrol Station in the area which is believed to have triggered the chain of events.

Apart from the casualties, the explosion also triggered a powerful raging fire which razed over seven makeshift shops, a motorcycle parked near the scene before the operatives of the state Fire Service could halt the spread and the attendant destruction.

The Ogun State Director of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Shakiru Adebakin, told journalists that the fire was caused by a man- made error that could have been averted if the owner of the filling station had adopted simple safety precaution. Adebakin said it was wrong to undertake welding activities in a petrol station without certain precautionary measures in place.

RIP to the dead..... but who welds near a loaded gas tank? Common sense dictates that they should have waited until the tank was empty and the fuel pumps were turned off before considering a welding operation. Even at that, there should be a distance of at least 10 metres between the welding site and the underground fuel tanks. Gas and petrol stations should also be fitted with foam based fire suppressants to prevent this kin tragedy.
