Why It Is Plain Foolishness To Attend The 2face Protest by baridamben(m): 7:39am On Feb 03, 2017 |
I like 2 Face, he's one of the very few musicians in Nigeria that I love to listen to, and I think he's the best Nigerian musical talent of his generation. 2Face, like any other Nigerian, has an inalienable right to protest and a right to join anyone to protest for whatever reason they feel aggrieved about. I don't think it is sensible to begin to contest his rights or question his educational background, it has nothing to do with the issue. . The point however is that this protest lacks focus and direction, or at best misdirected and ill-conceived. You can't wake up one morning and say you want to protest against bad governance by everybody. The question then would be, what constitute bad governance, and is it possible to achieve all those things that constitute good governance at the same time? A protest must have an objective, measurable and achievable, and it is the only way we could tell if it has succeeded or not. . When you talk about the ongoing protest in America, everybody knows it is about immigration policies. If the government reverse that policy then everyone would also know that the protest has succeeded. For the one that was done in Egypt, it was clearly a protest to unseat the government of the day, and the protest did not end until it succeeded. Come back to Nigeria, the #OccupyNigeria protest of 2012 was against the removal of fuel subsidy and reversal of the over-the-top fuel price imposed on the nation at a critical point in time. All these protests were well defined, measurable, specific, and achievable. If a protest is not defined along this line, then it is bound to fail from the beginning. . The organisers of the 2Face protest claim they're protesting against bad governance in Nigeria. What I would've expected them to do is to specify what they consider as bad governance, have them on a list and demand that they be reversed. It is only then that one would know and understand who the protest is directed at, and who is expected to act. . A situation where you're trying to protest against bad governance and a governor like Ayo Fayose, a man who was caught on tape plotting to rig the Ekiti State election and subvert the will of the people, is putting his hands up to protest with you, then there is a misunderstanding somewhere. No other crime is bigger than electoral fraud in a democracy, and a perpetrator of such crime should not and cannot claim to have the moral authority to protest against anyone else? But if Fayose could not even understand that the protest was also against him, then it means that the organisers did not properly articulate their message, targeting it at everyone and nobody. So Fayose and other governors or big men sponsoring and supporting the protest have already compromised the protest, leaving the impression that it is sponsored by those trying to fight the government of the day. It is now seen as a protest that is designed to make noise and cause disruption in the system, and that is why no well-meaning citizen who is making use of his senses would want to join in. . Also, bad governance in Nigeria expresses itself in some faulty structures and dysfunctional institutions. I want Nigerians to protest, but before such protest, we should be able to do our own analysis and tell ourselves what we think is our problem. If you want resource control or fiscal federalism, state police, local government autonomy, electoral reforms, Petroleum Industry reforms, major education and security reforms, then President Buhari is not the main man you need. President Buhari is not the national assembly, his job is not necessarily to restructure Nigeria, his job is to executive whatever structure we have in place. The National Assembly is the true arm of government tasked with restructuring the country. The president can only do reforms and policy formulation and once in a while request to the national assembly in the form of an executive bill. Other than that, there is nothing he can do. But it is the National Assembly who has most of the powers to help Nigeria achieve her true greatness. . For Nigeria to work, the three tier and three arms of government must work in synergy with one another. The executive must execute existing laws, the judiciary must be ready to deliver speedy justice, and the legislature must be ready to review the system and address whatever is going wrong with it. For the three tiers of government... Federal government must be up and doing in terms of security, provision of major infrastructure to help the economy, and then shape our foreign relations. This is why the United States presidential debate is centred around security, economy and foreign relations. The state and local government are however more closer to the people, and most of our day-to-day problems are their responsibilities. . If 2Face and his protest organisers were able to analyse the problems as every other protest organiser should, then it would've been easier for them to know where they're taking their protest to. If they knew what they're protesting against, if they were not pushed by corrupt elements, then they would've easily accepted the challenge to debate on Live National TV, as it would've afforded them the platform to have a larger national audience. . President Buhari's federal executive is the most functional organ of government in the country at this moment. Buhari has done well on security, he has done well on corruption, he is laying solid structures for the economy to grow. His first budget is just about 8 months old and nobody can expect him to perform any magic with the rot he inherited in such a short period. But with what I am seeing, with what Buhari is doing, Nigeria's economic fortunes will change for the better very soon. What the 2 Face group should've done is to put pressure on the National Assembly to address the defects in the system that is slowing down the process of change. Unfortunately, they're not doing that because the protest is not meant to address any real issue of change in the society, it is rather about painting the current government bad, and that is sad because we're missing a big opportunity to put an end to all our problems with Buhari as president. . The protesters say they're protesting against bad governance since 1999 till date... You know why? Because the organisers are serving the interest of those who want to paint the APC bad, tell us how bad their PDP is, and then form what they called a Mega opposition party. That is the end point to this protest, and if Nigerians must join, it is only fair that they know what they're joining. This protest is being sponsored by people in the PDP who cannot accept the fact that Nigeria's treasury does not belong to them, and a few corrupt elements within the APC who does not feel they're getting enough from the current system. These people are not willing to accept that it is no longer business as usual, so they key into the cry of the people, a cry that was caused by them in the first place, they exploit it as a weapon to fight the government with. . Nigerians should be wise, don't join any protest that you don't know the real organisers, and don't know what it seeks to accomplish. You can't attend a protest and risk everything to finally go home accomplishing nothing. That's just plain foolishness. . Baridam Ben 3 Likes 1 Share |

Ignoramus lying like imph. The protest was ongoing BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER INAUGRATION. In fact there were anti-Trump protests before he even won the presidency. So if you could get this simple fact twisted, it means your entire writeup is one huge load of stinking poo that needs to get flushed down the latrine. Ignoramuses posing like opinion leads. Nonsense. cc. baridamben
