Lool, with the way you stated it, one will be easily fooled into believing you have checked all these things. Check CU page for yourself, see the profiles of all lecturers listed and compares phd lecturers and profs to student ratio, you'll see that it's better than that of most govt. institutions. Lool, as for publication, almost any week you check researchgate.com, covenant university research publications always have the highest read in Nigeria (speaking of research relevance all over the world) - I'll check for this week now and update you appropriately.
Furthermore about teachers, covenant university have the highest number of active researchers on google scholar (by a very very big margin) of all universities in Nigeria, and one of the highest in Nigeria. Also, do you know that Covenant university have the largest institutional repository in Africa since more than three years now?
Don't mind the guy. UI may even succumb to CU on research very soon. For now CU is d only university with Research clusters receiving research fund and incentive. If a lecturer submits a grade A publication in an international journal, that lecturer would b awarded 1,000USD. All publications are financially awarded in CU so am sure they would soon be ranked top 10 Africa

Haha. Best scholars of 2015 in Ogun State? Cos that's the only way 78 CU lecturers could enter that sort of list. 78! Hehehe. Come on! They must've cured cancer.

Your second claim is untrue, at least during my time in CU. Finished there years ago. So you can imagine that I know what I'm talking about. I know lecturers that left for their PhD study.

The department I finished from currently has just 1 or 2 professors. They have ZERO equipment for research and it's same in other departments. So, how the hell are these "top scholars" publishing papers if they've got fvck all to set up experiments and get data? The honest fact is that most people publish lies in Nigeria.

Secondly, I hope you understand that webometrics' methodology is highly dependent on websites of universities (their web repositories). Knowing how things are in naija, you can be sure the results aren't going to be realistic.

Remember, the aim for me is to have a world standard institution in Nigeria that actually does research with good academic teaching. Not, nice buildings and grass and church services.

Stop trying to paint CU like it's a great uni. It's crap like the rest in Naija.
First what department did you attend in CU?
Secondly, the excellence indicator on webonetric ranking ranks top citations from the 26% of the highest ranked scholars in the world and CU is 2nd highest. Well I have 5 professors from d department I graduated from so let me know your department so I can check.

Lol, does my visit to CU make a difference with the quality standard of the school? I interviewed 30 students from CU and I clearly say only one got the job. Most of them couldn't write or speak well.

You have your view as to why it's a good school, but companies all over the world doesn't recognize CU as a quality standard school. If you say I used my friends as a case study, please give me your case study so I understand. Meanwhile, I will be visiting the school tomorrow as i do every day.
Am pretty sure you will never be in a position to interview me and i can assure you that
you can never ace my interview either. So let's leave that aside.

I'd love more elucidation on this cos all my research doesn't reflect what you've stated here. Educational institutions are categorized as proprietary educational institution(for profit) and not-for-profit educational institutions which most educational institutions owned by faith based missions fall or register under,I.e,they are companies with limited guarantee. They pay some form of taxes though, like employees in such not-for-profit educational institutions have their personal income tax being deducted, they also pay VAT and some other form of taxes to the state but their incomes as an institution are not taxed.
Actually, he is right. Mission universities have their own TIN and are taxed appropriately, like every other school. You can check in any local tax office.

Judging from your first line, it's clear you bring out words that makes no sense. I never mentioned a definition of whatsoever, by having a job outside the country. All over the world, the only recognized African school that companies respect is in Kenya. You have no clue of anything young man.

The method I proposed was simple, CU claims to have the best research department in Nigeria, yet, students can't write a simple journal or can't differentiate between an article or a white page. I bet you also can't yourself. I proposed to the school not to adopt the Nigerian system of ICAN, it's the same process all the time. Things are evolving, things are changing, and if the lecturers at CU won't accept the change, their students will forever live their lives that way.

I did a research at Adobe and brought the concept to different schools. My company has given such schools the room to learn this at a cheap rate, you need not know what the people at CU are saying. You are not a student there anyway, ask the students, they will tell you themselves.

My argument isn't because of the fees, my argument is that the so called emphasis on quality education you claim they give to their students is over emphasized.
Lol there's only one university in Kenya better than CU currently and that's the university of Nairobi. CU is better than Kenyatta university which is the second best in kenya by some margin. Sorry to say many of our Fed unis are still better than kenya's university. Is it Kenyatta that bedbugs has finished their destiny that you would compare to CU. Secondly, our Accounting Students are known to be top notch almost every where. If they choose to adopt ICAN certification over your proposed certification then it must be a policy issue. You need not let ur bruised ego cloud your judgement to resent CU. Finally, in ur initial writeup you claimed the tuition was increased to accommodate for your certification and that's a lie. No department/ even VC can increase Tuition for CU students like that. We all pay within the same hundredth margin from d start of our program to its conclusion..

Nah I find this hard to believe. CU graduates can't write or speak well? I spent five years in the school and I met good speakers in different departments. In my department we gave presentations virtually everyday and people spoke and wrote well. Maybe the people applying for your jobs are the ones that graduated with 3rd class after like 7 extra years.
The guy is a liar jare. How can you possibly interview 30 ppl from d same university.

Aventures:
Honestly I concur with this write up, from a practical experience I was an acting head of my department sometimes ago in one of Nigeria private university owned by a mission and I had the opportunity to attend budget meeting for a new session ahead. At the meeting the proposed recurrent expenditure alone outweighs the total tuition expected by far, and I innocently queried why not increased the intakes to make sure there is enough money, then I was made to understand that the NUC regulates the number of student they can admit based on their facilities and capability as at then it dawn on me why the tuition is that high. Now in a case where recurrent expenditure is more than income how do they cope with capital expenditure. As at that time the capital expenditure before the university runs to billions, honestly education is quite expensive our government need to do something to help. I believe the tuition will still come down by the time most of this schools are fully developed and they can admit a large number of student, but that is going to be a long time. it is well
Sir/Ma only exposed ppl like you would understand. Thank you for your service in the education sector.

Ok next time when you write you should name the institute/university you are referring to in full. The purpose for this thread was never to validate Covenant university over any other University in Nigeria but to explain why Church universities were 'expensive'. So you can go away with your opinion about priv unis. Am glad you think I am an isolated individual who has never travelled the world even though you've never met me- It makes it clearer that your initial opinion was based on assumption and not on facts.

I tire man, people just coming here saying what they know nothing about, simply because this is a faceless forum. Even once that claims to have graduated from CU in 2010 when CU was 7yrs old and was barely ranked among the best 10 universities in Nigeria is coming here to tell people what "he thinks" CU looks like. Well one thing is sure, when they see facts, they pack their loads and run out of threads.

UI has already succumbed to CU, ranking don't show what is happening at the moment, they only show what happened previous years because of cummulative. For example, if you see a 2017 ranking, it wont be based on the performance of 2016 or even 2015, but mostly 3-5 years before the stated 2015/2016!

CU's institutional repository has always been ranked top 10 in Africa, but I just checked the latest ranking, it has slipped to 13th position in Africa. Now second among west african universities and 642nd in the world (among the top 1000)! Follow link to see: http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/Africa

Goodness gracious!! Where the fvck are you getting your info fromhuh CU is 2nd highest in the world?? This is the most ridiculous thing I shall see this week.

I've checked their publications. As expected, the journals that published their "research" have the lowest impact factor imaginable. Sh!t open access journals that I can make sh!t up today and it gets accepted for publication tomorrow as long as I pay APC. The highest rating I saw is 2.3. Have you seen some of the science papers? Excel grade graph quality, questionable methodology, etc.

The problem is that I'm arguing with people who know nothing about good scientific research, who don't understand that publishing your work at a 0.93 rated journal is tantamount to career suicide in developed countries, who thinks publishing 500 papers that have no scientific relevance in sh!t "international" journals is great work.

Honestly, what's the aim of this argument? That CU is a world class university? I'm sorry, it isn't. You don't have sh!t.

I'm gonna ignore your questions about what course I did at CU. I owe you no explanation on that.

No you never stated that the ranking was for Naija. You made it seem like it was worldwide.

Only if you understand how often people site nonsense. Since I do research and you don't, I'll give you an example:

I once measured hole and electron mobility in a polymeric material used in organic electronic devices via transient photoconductivity (of course, no Nigerian institution has any optics setup or clean room or thermal evaporators with UHV chambers or anything whatsoever that I needed to do this work including your almighty CU). I checked basically all papers related with this issue, only THREE out of 60 or so papers I checked cited the original source of the mobility value they stated. Only 1 out of the remaining 3 bothered to state that the value was based on the FET method which gives higher estimates. I'm talking of high impact papers in Nature and Physics Review, not CU horseshit published at King Saud or Procedia Manufacturing journals. As long as it fits with whatever you wanna write, people will cite your article. One more thing, shit papers often cite equally shit papers while good papers heading for the likes of Nature can't afford to cite shit papers.

Mentally lazy. Lol. I'm done arguing with bloody amateurs who probably work for CU and think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

You keep talking trash as usual. There are about 100 reputable international journals in the world and d vast majority of CU's publications are there. You owe me no explanation simply because you are a deplorable liar. I initially thought you were one of those guys who spent four years of his life sniffing drugs and probably got suspended for years and yet blame d uni for the misery you caused yourself. For a CU alumnus you seem very ignorant about CU in totality, else we wouldn't need to explain certain stuff to you-Now don't run to google to 'cook' up some more lies because you certainly should know we would query you on things google can't answer for you. Also you appear very ignorant about the essence of research. But i wont indulge you-Hell No! You called CU research poo and yet it is d 2nd best in Nigeria which means it is better than any other 'poo' research university in Nigeria. Even an Harvard professor would never say the rubbish you are saying because research is always local before global so if your research isn't addressing National or Regional issues, then it isn't needed. Now u asking me what is the aim of these argument, like r u kidding me! The aim of this thread was to give reasons why church universities were expensive until all u folks came along with your crap argument. Now don't bother quoting me again cos ur argument stinks to high heavens.

Sniffing drugs and suspended for years. Lol. You're truly a CU guy - worker or student. A fucking ignorant and childish one if I might add.

So no one thinks I'm a fraud, I shall describe your combined Chem Eng and Pet Eng department to you. It was new when we were about leaving. It has some utterly useless pilot plants and labs with no DI water on the ground floor (how anyone runs an experiment without DI water is just shocking), and the HOD's office is on the topmost floor for the chem eng side.Probably the most sophisticated spectroscopic equipment in that building is a UV-Vis that no one ever used in our time, not to talk of having real materials xterization equipment. You should ask Prof Hymore, the only decent lecturer the department ever had till date, who his best reaction kinetics student ever was. Heard he left a while ago.

Now let me educate you on research. Journals are ranked by impact factor or any equivalent ranking index. Your "research goes local before going global" statement is horseshit. Even if you do an experiment in Afghanistan or in Sao Tome, as long as it's novel and reproducible, you can get published in the best of journals - and the best is basically Nature in the science community. However, most people, for career reasons and to secure grants, go for quantity and make lots of unoriginal research. They then send their manuscripts to low rated journals and no name open access journals with poor peer review for publication. Now, the reason I'm calling CU research substandard is because they neither have the equipment nor have they EVER had an article published in any journal with an impact factor up to 5. Lol. 5 is probably too high, let's make it 3!

Are government unis better? Maybe, maybe not. That's why I said CU is the only exception in private schools but they're all still crap in the end. However, OAU is probably the only university in Nigeria with a useful research institute (CERD) that has useful equipment (or claim to, don't know if they work). Heard it's got XRD, low energy beam tandem accelerator, and some other useful stuff. That means, they can carry out better research and have the opportunity to publish in higher rated journals. Now you see the difference!

Can CU afford to get XRD, TEM, SEM, SQUID, STM, etc? Surely not. They haven't got the money to buy all these stuff. But government schools can, because government and private investment. Doesn't mean our useless government has done so though.

It's unfortunate you don't understand my original argument and you CU lovers turned the thread into a "CU is a world class institution" argument.

You got the "glocal" argument wrong. Every good research must of course address local problems, but you could do that in an innovative and inventive way that it could in fact be accepted by foreign journals. For instance if I choose to undertake a study on Ebola or GM food. My study on Ebola is of immediate domestic value as well as GM food. My initial thesis proposal was to produce rice that would be made to carry b-carotene gene which could help correct eye defects amongst Northern Nigerians-That is a research for a local relevance but would certainly be produced in an high impact journal. I am starting a graduate program in Canada soon and I know that most of their thesis are of local relevance but valued globally. Local doesn't mean inferior.

You could see I have scaled down my rhetoric upon learning that you were truly a CU student. The reason for the outburst was because I am fully aware that there are many impostors on this site that go to lengths to discredit something they don't believe in. And I understand that there were certain deficiencies in that department you mentioned but frankly there is a continuous overhaul of the entire system. Things have changed from the time you graduated. CU now has 20 research clusters that receives funding and the research groups are getting bigger I know in some few weeks CU would take delivery of some high grade equipments to stock the new research hub and there is a biotech center about to be endowed to d universities. The university is also trying to scale up research to 200/year to meet THE standard. Frankly, CU is doing well for a 15 yr old university. It is still the youngest university on the top 100 Africa and that's good. I know you are perfectly entitled to ur narrative but it doesn't change the fact that some of us actually believe CU is Nigeria's only viable hope for now. Peace

I know you haven't been to CU lately to see the state of facilities on ground, if so, why make such bogus claims. I don't know of Chem engine dept. (but am sure they got much more) cos when I was in CU, my dept (Biological sciences) benefited close to 500 million to set up their molecular lab (3 yrs ago) in CST, in which I did DNA extraction as an undergraduate course work. The last time I checked, people were doing their PHD programs there from OAU. They also come for our biotech hands on molecular workshops! I know you havn't seen or heard of the state of the art research center where people can now come to run tests like GC-MS and the likes. Infact, they recently conducted and are still doing recruit for local and international personnel to man some facilities. For those tests you stated, I wish I knew them but I don't and I don't believe they don't run at least three of them at the moment, not until I find out.

I would have said you should visit CU, since you are not in anyway up to date with the recent developments but that's out of place since it's pretty obvious that you detest CU. Well, that was how most of the students I met in CU when you were about leaving were (in Prof. Obayan's time). I wish you witnessed the era of the former VC (Charles Ayo). Now for the high impact research citation you talked about, once again you are saying what you don't know. Google or simply search for Charles ayo, adeyemi atayero, Dr. Usikalu, Louis egwari, olawale obembe (some of the ones I know) on scopus and elsavier and see the impact of their scientific papers since the past three years. Besides why do you think elsavier would seek to partner with a school that does not generate high impact research (http://covenantuniversity.edu.ng/News/CU-Elsevier-Mull-Partnership-on-Information-Solutions#.WKHsIm8rK00 http://covenantuniversity.edu.ng/News/Dr.-Usikalu-Wins-Elsevier-Foundation-Award#.WKGDAW8rK00). Mind you that's the first time they would be doing such with any school around here! Also, I told you that CU's research are well read on research gate but I don't think you bothered to find out. I will end with this: whether CU is actually advancing and breaking new grounds as it appears to be research-wise or not, you are hell-bent on your opinion, and I really respect that; even though I'm a recent graduate which CU has influenced positively to transform my world and has set for me a foundation upon which I shall attain global relevance in science and technology. Sentiments aside, I know CU more than you (which really makes me wonder why you are putting up baseless claims online). Have a nice day!

Lol I didn't know you worked at the Mol Lab. Anyway I do hope they open another lab at CUCRID soon. Did you come for the last Alumni meeting?

There has been so much buzz about Church universities being expensive in Nigeria and I would like to address some of this controversies mostly using Covenant University as a case study.

Tithes/Offerings are used to build Church Universities? This seems to be a widely asserted theory. This is partly not true because most Churches don’t exactly use Tithes/Offerings for building church universities but create special donations for that purpose. Usually, the initial university capital projects are funded with these donations. We have to remember that the core mandate of any church isn’t not to create universities but to preach the gospel of Jesus and help the poor and that is done with tithes/offering to establish outreaches, pay pastoral salaries, build new churches etc.

Donations can’t sustain recurrent expenditure: while ‘excited’ members would usually agree to pay donations for the initial financial responsibility of the universities. No church would be able to get its church members to continually pay for its recurrent expenditure. In fact if any of these church schools were to try and choose continual donations as an alternative to ‘High’ tuition fees the next thing you would see are private university lecturers going on strike.

Are Church universities profitable? I do not believe any sane investor or business man would venture into the tertiary education sector with the aim of making profit. There is a reason why you wouldn’t find Otedola or Dangote investing in education. If you do your research properly you would find that till today Covenant university hasn’t made any profit for its proprietors. Let us examine the revenue vs expenditure of Covenant university for example. The Covenant university tuition(undergraduate) ranges between 600,000-800,000 depending on level/program but I would base it on 700k. There are about 7,000 students on campus at a given time so I multiply 700,000 by 7,000=4.9 billion. So the university’s revenue from tuition fees is about 4.9 billion.

When considering expenditure I would like to keep the value projections conservative. I believe Covenant University’s wage bill to be around 500 million/month but I would calculate using 400 million since that is the average wage bill for a Nigerian university. So 400 million x 12 months= 4.8 billion. I currently don’t know how much CU pays to get electricity but reports had it that in 2012 the university spent 700 million naira on electricity. I would deliberately exclude expenditures like research grant, conference support, Infrastructure, field trips, medical services, internet provision e.t.c because I do not have real data to conclude how much they gulp yearly. So using just wage bill+Electricity, the university has spent 5.5 billion when the tuition fee is about 4.8 billion. This proves the former NUC president, Peter Okebukola right when he said that ‘’Church universities were being too dependent on the Church’’. Also, the VC of Crawford did buttress the fact that the proprietor base still donates 500 million yearly to Crawford as subsidy. If these subsidies weren’t in place Church universities would have been more expensive that secular ones.

Assumed wealth of the Church: there is a saying in Yoruba land that ‘’the chicken sweats but the feathers won’t let you know’’. Would you believe that Oyedepo nearly missed his own deadline for the establishment of the first two halls of residence in Covenant University? because donations weren’t coming forth, until God miraculously provided.

‘Expensive’ tuition isn’t unique to Pentecostal Churches: whilst many choose to assault Pa. Adeboye and Bishop Oyedepo for charging high tuition fees. It is important to note that even Orthodox churches which are known not to be ‘’prosperity conscious’’ charge within the same bracket e.g Bowen(Baptist), ECWA(Bingham), Godfrey Okoye(Catholic), Adventist(Babcock), JABU(CAC), Methodist(Wesley) e.t.c

Expensive tuition isn’t unique to Church universities alone; Church universities are ranked to be generally good with Covenant University averagely in top three on the two out of four most reputable rankings in the world-Webometrics and Times higher education. However Islamic schools that are not in the top 50 universities in Nigeria but also charge about half a million(e.g Crescent) which is about the same thing CU charges.

The underlining purpose for creating Church schools; This is very important, the creation of church schools isn’t to actually teach physics and chemistry, but to create a spiritual revolution. Take that spiritual revolution away from CU, then it is by no means different from Afebabalola university. Therefore, if you are a committed member of your church you are already a member of that movement. For instance I am not a living faith member, but by attending CU I have joined myself to the spiritual movement of the church.

How did you know, you people just come on internet and say what you have no clue of with so much impunity. Now, Covenant University has over 400 active researchers on google scholar (follow the link to see............ https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=view_org&hl=en&org=18224868971208705017&after_author=AgNhAP3___8J&astart=400 and pic is also attached!), also consider lecturers that are not on google scholar, administrative staff, campus keepers, electricians, Construction agency and staffs, hall officers and porters, and a host of other non-academic staffs, you should be able to humbly agree that you goofed big time.

Once again, you have started to lie (as per your bro working ther or not, I don't know but I'm sure you don't know th school's salsry structure) , Okay, did ur bro show you the school's salary structure from which you drew conclusion? Also, which department is your brother? Now, imagine the salary structure of a school that can attract nobel prize holders and reputable foreign lecturers. Go through the schools webstie for lecturers profiles, thank me later!
Why are people arguing..when the facts are opened for everyone to see...

If the revenue of a average private university is 4.8 billion naira per year..then i have to strongly consider
opening one myself....a finance officer sent me the monthly wage bill of a private secodary school that makes
over 500 Million naira a year and i nearly fell of my chair in shock...these Private school owners are making serious money and
paying staff peanuts !!!
