Bello,The Scourge Of Kogites:the whole educational sector on strike by michaelfriday44(op):
In the words of Socrates "No man
undertakes a trade he has not
learned, even the meanest; yet
everyone think himself sufficiently
qualified for the hardest of all trades,
government". Aristotle once taught
his student, Alexander the great in
this words "To rule well, you must
first be ruled(taught). Hence, the
mystery behind Bello's inadequacy is
unravelled though it is quite
surprising and sickening to
experience this leadership of an
inauthentic governor: The ungainly
and ungoverned Governor Yahaya
Bello's government has been one
characterized with food insecurity,
moral ineptitude, ruckus and
flummoxed activities. This is
accountable with the fact that GYB is
a neophyte in handling governmental
proceedings which is as a result of
the fact that he has never genuinely
been under any leadership training
which is a prerequisite for good
leadership as stated by Socrates and
Aristotle among many philosophers.
Not every one has the ability to lead.
GYB may be a business tycoon. Fine!
But not a leader. Who is a leader?
Since time began and years turn into
centuries, leaders have been known
to be individuals who have the
interest of the people at heart; they
are purposeful, innovative, wise,
loving and caring. God saw this
attributes inherent in Moses and
chose him to lead the Israelites out
of Egypt. Alexander the great, the
prodigious Grecian emperor was a
great lover of the people as well. An
emperor who single-handedly
sponsored the marriage of 10000 of
his troops. Little wonder, he
conquered more land than any of his
predecessors or contemporaries.
There are many other renowned
personalities who went through
series of heinous training to emerge
as remarkable and incredible legends
but space evades me to list them
herein. All the heroes and great
leaders the world have ever produced
were individuals who puts the people
interest first: GYB may be purposeful
and innovative but lacks a concerned
heart for the people which accounts
for his tyrannous tenure. The worst
offence a leader can commit against
the led is to be insensitive to their
predicament as it is the case with
GYB's regime who has deafened his
ear to the wail of the poor masses.
What a leadership? It really sucks!
The words of Dwight D. Eisenhower
tingles and makes me sober; for it is
the emblem of our experience, he
wrote "Every house that's built, every
new car bought, every case won in
court are in the final sense
sponsored with theft from public
fund; from those who hunger and are
not fed, those who are cold and are
not clothed, this rich and pompous
politicians are not spending money
alone but are also spending the
sweat of the labourers(civil servants),
the genius of stars and the hope of
the nation's youth. This is not a way
of life in any through sense". Such a
pitiable dismal where the stipends
due to civil servants are not given to
them; a total disgrace and mayhem
where the welfare of the youth is
neglected and are left to wander on
the street. All the students and pupils
in the public education sector are at
home. What's this about? What a
world where the strong are unjust,
the weak insecured and peace
unpreserved? For how long are we
going to continue in Aristocracy and/
or Autocracy in the guise of
democracy. In democracy, there is a
balance of power between the
leaders and the will of the people;
this is absent in the politics we
practice in this state.
Relating Bello's governance with that
of some monarchs. Just as they were
good leaders in time past, they were
mean and acrimonious leaders whose
reign were calamitous. Because of
the volume of this article, I'll limit my
analogy in brevity to the reign of
emperor Nero and King Chaka of the
Zulu kingdom in particular. Nero
A.D54-AD68 is one of the most
infamous men history has ever
recorded: A man who killed his own
mother, and his first wife. His reign
was characterized with bloodshed,
famine, confiscation of properties in
the name of rebuilding a city he
deliberately sets on fire. He
unleashed a financial strain on the
people through extortion and
nonpayment of wages and cared not
about the citizens. He was being
venerated by some sycophants just
like those around GYB who has
programmed his political career for
moribund. The story changed in AD
68, when the praetorian guard, the
force responsible for the emperor's
safety renounced their soccour and
loyalty to him and was later declared
as enemy of the populace by the
same Senators that commended him
when he was perpetrating evil.
King Chaka was abhorred and
despised because he treated his
subject with disdain and levity. He
was nonchalant, noncommittal and
possessed inhumane character
towards his people.
The trio share one thing in common
which is the characterization of their
leadership with famine, untold
hardship, sorrow, dismality, academic
stagnancy and insecurity. God have
mercy on our dear state. May we
never experience a governor such as
this.
Before my continuance, I love to
correct an impression here
beforehand: To the great and ever
brave people of Ebiraland, this is not
about political or tribal differences
but about the suffering masses under
the governorship of one who is not
worthy of our followership.
Initially, I was saying "wetin concern
me? " and was refraining from
activism. Little did I know that it is
only a coward who can and will not
take a side on matters that concerns
even oneself. Edward R. Murrow
posits and I quote "A nation of sheep
begets a government of wolves". We
keep mute for the fear death,
humiliation, imprisonment while
injustice prevails. It was never like
this in the era of Cicero, Abraham
Lincoln, Nelson Mandela e.t.c. I fear
for this generation; I fear that ours
will be one that cannot stand for
what is right. Alan Moore stated that
"people should not be afraid of their
government rather the government
should be afraid of her people ".
From time past, government have
been afraid and circumspective in
matters regarding the populace
because they know what an angry
mob can do if they stands as one.
This spirit of solidarity is gradually
going into extinction and it heightens
my fear of a muted, directionless,
educated, strong but yet pitiable
generation. Say no to tyrannism;
stand up for justice irrespective of
gender, tribe and language.
Be cautious of beguiled appraisal as
regards GYB's governance and as an
individual be compelled to scrutinize
reasonably this impertinent
governance, a yoke called
newdirection which is an emblem of
stagnancy, shame and befuddlement.
God bless Kogi state!
God bless Nigeria!
