Thanks Naptu2. You have no idea how much this means to me...it came at a time I'm organising an African event at my institution; so I've shamelessly created a new playlist in which more than 60% of the songs are from your list. The song "Welela" brought so much memories, I almost teared up listening to it!

Thank you again. You're awesome!!! cool cool
My naptu2 is beyond awesome cool

This might probably be the first African song to become a worldwide hit. The song is so special that I'm going to post two videos of it. There are uncountable versions of this song.

Miriam Makeba first released Pata Pata in 1957 and it was an instant hit. She made a lot of trips to the US and Europe over the next few years, partly due to the US/Caribbean legend, Harry Belafonte, who was eager to promote African artistes in the US. She also campaigned against apartheid.

In 1960, after one of her trips abroad, she went back to South Africa, but was denied entry. The white supremacist government had cancelled her passport and revoked her citizenship documents because she campaigned against apartheid.

Many African countries came to her aid. She was given citizenship of many African countries including Ghana and Tanzania and Cuba also gave her citizenship. She was also invited to perform at the inauguration of the Organisation Of African Unity (the forerunner of the African Union) and she also addressed the UN.

She lived in the US for much of her time in exile and re-released Pata Pata in the US in 1967. It became a worldwide hit again.

So many people have covered this song (including Manu Dibango). She released a dance version in 1989 and it became an anthem on Radio Nigeria (I'm still searching for that version).

She was a regular guest at the Nigerian Music Awards in the late '80s and early '90s.

I think this performance was at the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1967 (she had previously appeared on the Tonight Show in 1963).

Akula Owu Onyeara. The original version by The Funkees is on YouTube. I also saw 1990 on YouTube, but I'm still looking for Big Bottom.

Funny enough, this was the first video I viewed on YouTube. I was so glued to her live performance that I kept replaying over and over. I'm still wondering how I never knew of Miriam Makeba till last night, she looked so happy and beautiful.

I've been shamelessly humming and dancing to this song all day. I LOVE MAKEBA

This is probably the most famous and the best a capella group to come out of Africa (by now, many of you will already know the group I'm referring to). They've won 4 Grammy awards.

The South African isicathamiya and mbube styles of singing (a capella) were very popular in Nigeria in the 1970s and '80s. It was believed at that time, that black South Africans were very good singers and that this ability was developed because of their long years of suffering under the apartheid system (just as it was believed that black Americans developed their ability to sing during the era of slavery in the United States).

Ladysmith Black Mambazo became the symbol of South African a capella singing in the 1980s. They sang Homeless and Diamonds In The Soles Of Her Shoes with Paul Simon and also provided backing vocals on another Paul Simon song, Bodyguard. These songs became worldwide hits.

I'm going to post two videos here. The first is a video of Ladysmith Black Mambazo performing Homeless. The second is a video of Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo performing Homeless.

I consider him to be a Nigerian and his songs are on my list of 150 Nigerian songs.

naptu2:
The old debate: "Was Prince Nico Mbarga a Nigerian or a Cameroonian"?

Prince Nico Mbarga was born in Abakaliki, Nigeria to a Cameroonian father and a Nigerian mother. He grew up in Nigeria and started playing music in Nigerian school bands. He achieved his greatest success while playing in Onitsha, Nigeria.

Prince Nico Mbarga was one of the original members of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN). He also set up his record company (distributed by Polydor Nigeria) and his hotel in Nigeria (the hotel was in Ikom).

Prince Nico Mbarga died in a motorcycle accident in Calabar, Nigeria in 1997 and he was buried at his residence in Ikom, Nigeria.

In my view, Prince Nico Mbarga was a Nigerian.

There are quite a few songs that I forgot to include in the list. I'm going to quickly post three of the most popular ones.
Re: 50 Songs By Other Africans That Were Hits In Nigeria by naptu2: 4:58pm On Mar 02, 2017
How could I forget this song. It was so popular that many people thought that it was a Nigerian song (I thought so too in the late 1970s and early 1980s). They even included it in the Nigerian section of the musical Kakadu.

We are going,
Heaven knows where we are going,
We know we are.

And we'll get there.
Heaven knows when we will get there.

This song was the signature tune of so many shows on radio and tv. It was often played early in the morning on Radio Nigeria (especially on Radio Nigeria 2, the Sunshine Station).

Since nobody has written about this wonderful song, I'm going to write about it.

This song takes me back to my childhood.

The song was incredibly popular in the 1970s. It's from a 1974 South African musical. They toured Nigeria many times and I think they also staged a performance at FESTAC '77.

Lots of Nigerian schools and youth groups also performed this play and these two songs were played over and over on Radio Nigeria.

From the musical Ipi Tombi, this is N'tombia.

[quote author=naptu2 post=53886466]There was a thread on the home page yesterday, about how difficult it is for songs from other African countries to break into the Nigerian market. This reminded me of songs from other African countries that have been hits in Nigeria. So I decided to do a list of 50 songs by other Africans that have been hits in Nigeria.

Note (1) This is not a list of all the songs by other Africans that have been hits in Nigeria. It's just a list of 50 songs.

2) Eddy Grant is in the honourable mentions section because, although he sang about Africa and arpatheid and he often visited Nigeria, he is actually from Guyana in the Caribbeans/South America (some people think that he is Nigerian). Oliver Mutukudzi's song is also in that section because it wasn't a major hit, despite the fact that it was played a lot on the radio.

Or you can download it straight from the YouTube video if you have YouTube Downloader.

I could have sworn that I heard Charly Boy's version of this song sometime between 1986 and 1989, but the Internet is telling me that it was released in 1990.

This song was originally done by the Funkees in the 1970s and it's no surprise that Charly Boy covered it (it's a Charly Boy kind of song).
