This might probably be the first African song to become a worldwide hit. The song is so special that I'm going to post two videos of it. There are uncountable versions of this song. Miriam Makeba first released Pata Pata in 1957 and it was an instant hit. She made a lot of trips to the US and Europe over the next few years, partly due to the US/Caribbean legend, Harry Belafonte, who was eager to promote African artistes in the US. She also campaigned against apartheid. In 1960, after one of her trips abroad, she went back to South Africa, but was denied entry. The white supremacist government had cancelled her passport and revoked her citizenship documents because she campaigned against apartheid. Many African countries came to her aid. She was given citizenship of many African countries including Ghana and Tanzania and Cuba also gave her citizenship. She was also invited to perform at the inauguration of the Organisation Of African Unity (the forerunner of the African Union) and she also addressed the UN. She lived in the US for much of her time in exile and re-released Pata Pata in the US in 1967. It became a worldwide hit again. So many people have covered this song (including Manu Dibango). She released a dance version in 1989 and it became an anthem on Radio Nigeria (I'm still searching for that version). She was a regular guest at the Nigerian Music Awards in the late '80s and early '90s. I think this performance was at the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1967 (she had previously appeared on the Tonight Show in 1963). naptu2:Funny enough, this was the first video I viewed on YouTube. I was so glued to her live performance that I kept replaying over and over. I'm still wondering how I never knew of Miriam Makeba till last night, she looked so happy and beautiful. I've been shamelessly humming and dancing to this song all day. I LOVE MAKEBA 1 Like 1 Share |

This is probably the most famous and the best a capella group to come out of Africa (by now, many of you will already know the group I'm referring to). They've won 4 Grammy awards. The South African isicathamiya and mbube styles of singing (a capella) were very popular in Nigeria in the 1970s and '80s. It was believed at that time, that black South Africans were very good singers and that this ability was developed because of their long years of suffering under the apartheid system (just as it was believed that black Americans developed their ability to sing during the era of slavery in the United States). Ladysmith Black Mambazo became the symbol of South African a capella singing in the 1980s. They sang Homeless and Diamonds In The Soles Of Her Shoes with Paul Simon and also provided backing vocals on another Paul Simon song, Bodyguard. These songs became worldwide hits. I'm going to post two videos here. The first is a video of Ladysmith Black Mambazo performing Homeless. The second is a video of Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo performing Homeless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFQ1TSzdpRA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b5B9pOUd4M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBMAXQ28V-w |

Re: 50 Songs By Other Africans That Were Hits In Nigeria by naptu2: 4:58pm On Mar 02, 2017 |
How could I forget this song. It was so popular that many people thought that it was a Nigerian song (I thought so too in the late 1970s and early 1980s). They even included it in the Nigerian section of the musical Kakadu. We are going, Osibisa - Woyaya https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1QM3_fguB8 |

This song was the signature tune of so many shows on radio and tv. It was often played early in the morning on Radio Nigeria (especially on Radio Nigeria 2, the Sunshine Station). Everybody, Osibisa - Sunshine Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeH3OdgGHso |

[quote author=naptu2 post=53886466]There was a thread on the home page yesterday, about how difficult it is for songs from other African countries to break into the Nigerian market. This reminded me of songs from other African countries that have been hits in Nigeria. So I decided to do a list of 50 songs by other Africans that have been hits in Nigeria. Note (1) This is not a list of all the songs by other Africans that have been hits in Nigeria. It's just a list of 50 songs. 2) Eddy Grant is in the honourable mentions section because, although he sang about Africa and arpatheid and he often visited Nigeria, he is actually from Guyana in the Caribbeans/South America (some people think that he is Nigerian). Oliver Mutukudzi's song is also in that section because it wasn't a major hit, despite the fact that it was played a lot on the radio. Song - Artist (Country) 1) Khona - Uhuru (South Africa) 2) Windeck - Cabo Snoop (Angola) 3) Decale Aladji - DJ Ramatoulaye (Ivory Coast) 4) Gweta - Toofan (Togo) 5) Azonto - Fuse ODG (Ghana) 6) Coupe Bibamba - Awilo Longomba (Congo) 7) Agolo - Angelique Kidjo (Benin) 8 ) Voodoo Child - Angelique Kidjo (Benin) 9) Magic System - Premier Gaou (Ivory Coast) 10) Mzbel - 16 Years (Ghana) 11) Umqombothi - Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa) 12) Thank You Mr DJ - Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa) 13) I'm Burning Up - Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa) 14) Winnie Mandela - Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa) 15) I Cry For Freedom - Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa) 16) Hi Life - Wally Badarou (Benin) 17) Wes - Alane (Cameroon) 18) Wes - I Love Football (Cameroon) 19) Ahonka Womu - VIP (Ghana) 20) Jika - Mi Casa (South Africa) 21) It's Your Wedding Day - Brenda Fassie (South Africa) 22) Vulindlela - Brenda Fassie (South Africa) 23) Fefe Nefe - Tic Tac (Ghana) 24) You May Kiss Your Bride - Bollie (Ghana) 25) Via Orlando - Mahoota and Vetkuk (South Africa) 26) Lengoma - DJ Sbu ft Zahara (South Africa) 27) Destiny - Malaika (South Africa) 28) Fanta Diallo - Alpha Blondy (Ivory Coast) 29) Cocody Rock - Alpha Blondy (Ivory Coast) 30) Doo Be Doo - Freshly Ground (South Africa) 31) Kokolioko - Miatta Fahnbulleh (Liberia) 32) Africa - Salif Keita (Mali) 33) Ye Ke Ye Ke - Mory Kante (Guinea) 34) Pata Pata - Miriam Makeba (South Africa) 35) Malaika - Miriam Makeba (South Africa) 36) I've Got You Babe - Lucky Dube (South Africa) 37) Different Colours - Lucky Dube (South Africa) 38) Ipi Ntombia - Ipi Tombi (South Africa) 39) The Warrior- Ipi Ntombi (South Africa) 40) Zamina Mina Zangalewa - Zangalewa (Cameroon) 41) Bring Him Back Home - Hugh Masekela (South Africa) 42) Soul Makossa - Manu Dibango (Cameroon) 43) Wa Jo - Nell Oliver (Benin) 44) Baby Girl - Nell Oliver (Benin) 45) Homeless - Lady Smith Black Mambazo (South Africa) 46) Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes - Lady Smith Black Mambazo (South Africa) 47) Yela - Baaba Maal (Senegal) 48) So Why - Youssou N'dour, Papa Wemba, Lucky Dube, Lagbaja, Jabu Khanyile and Bayete (various African countries) 49) All For You - ET Mensah (Ghana) 50) Wavin' Flag - K'naan (Somalia) Honourable mentions Hello Africa - Eddy Grant (Guyana) Give Me Hope Joanna - Eddy Grant (Guyana) I don't Wanna Dance - Eddy Grant (Guyana) Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant (Guyana) Todii - Oliver Mutukudzi (Zimbabwe) Everybody's Free (To Feel Good) - Rozalla (Zambia) [/quote).hello bros, this no 38 .ipi ntombia (south Africa).could you check with it again?,I seem to know the music way back as a child but the title .....please help with it, really need to download it . what is the title of the track, album name ? |
