a country that doesn't have Oil is celebrating 300th aircraft while a country that doesn't even have a National airline is closing their runway for repairs...

They certainly carry out maintenance tasks in parallel with running the airport. But Nigerians refuse to think outside the box unfortunately. When the people in power are not even capable in the first place. This is the result. Backward thinking and approaches.

Ahead of the expected closure of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja for the repairs of the runway beginning from 8th of March 2017, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has commenced the upgrading of navigational facilities at the Kaduna airport to absorb the increased volume of traffic to be diverted from Abuja.

The aircraft which will be used for calibration has landed in Kaduna to measure the landing systems....

Dubai airport has two runways and three terminals.

Abuja airport has one runway and one terminal.

Abuja airport runway renovation is also 20 years overdue

I complain because Nigeria always do everything at 11th hour and officials using every opportunity to enrich themselves. You hear the security lapses consigning this diversion. Am a traveller and live in Abuja.

The problem is other airports carry out maintenance as and at when due. The reason why we have tonclose down Abuja is because the runway was not maintained at all over the last 20 years

Maintenance is maintenance, your given reason is not a sufficient excuse to completely close down an International airport in a country which is trying to woo foreign investors. This is not a local airport for goodness sake. People are not ready to endanger their lives by going via Kaduna.

Predictable defender. Everything you must defend even if it doesn't make sense.

Have other countries not done it before? Yes or No?
Is Nigeria not trying to woo foreign investors? Yes or No?
You guys think other nationals don't value their lives, you think they are ready to play kite with their valued lives? Think again.

Lmao. What a country! Who closes down its main airport for refurbishment. How can they not eliminate the single point of failure being the only runway in over 20 years? What kind of useless country is this?

You want to get to Abuja now, you will now fly to kaduna and then take ekenedilichukwu to Abuja. What a shame!

Well....we could leave the airport open....and continue to risk accidents, to say nothing of losing international certification because of bad runways...

(And the runway is bad.....I was in a plane that landed at Abuja Airport last month.)

As I said elsewhere....we are paying the price for not renovating the runway as and at when due AND for not adding a second runway.. A problem which goes back 20 years.

It's not about leaving the airport open and NOT maintaining it. The point is the maintenance can be staggered and done in parallel while keeping the airport running. Other countries have done it, why is it always Nigeria's case that is ridiculously different? Why?

Dubai Airport was closed for runway repairs back in 2013...according to Wikipedia:

In 2013 Dubai Airports announced an 80-day runway refurbishment program which started on 1 May 2014 and was completed on 21 July 2014. The northern runway was resurfaced while lighting upgrades and additional taxiways were built on the southern runway to help boost its capacity. The southern runway was closed from 1 May to 31 May 2014, while the northern runway was closed from 31 May to 20 July 2014. Due to extra congestion on one runway, all freighter, charter and general aviation flights were diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport.Flights at DXB were reduced by 26 percent and 14 airlines moved to Al Maktoum International Airport whilst the runways works were being done. Emirates cut 5000 flights and grounded over 20 aircraft during the period
.

So, what is happening in Abuja is not unusual.
