Episode 23

Mama instructed Obioma to invite Austin on Sunday. She also pleaded with Ejike to come down to the village that same day so that they will start making arrangements.
Anna never wanted to reveal to her sister what was on ground, she wanted Austin to accept her first before blowing the whistle.
........................................................
Onyinye was getting her mind off from Austin, she accepted it as her fate and learnt from her mistake. And wished for Austin to grant her a second chance. Austin barred her number from reaching his phone. When she called him with another person's number. He didn't sound harsh nor angry with her. All he told her was to forget everything about him, that trust had been deleted from his dictionary.
She cried the last, consoled herself and moved on because she was not the type of person who fight for love, she believed in the principles of "what is mine, is mine and nothing can stop it".

"What is happening to Anna? For five days now, I have not seen her around, and she has not even called me, her number keeps giving unavailability tone" Onyinye said worrying about her sister's whereabouts.
And she continued"Let me call her number again, I pray it rings this time" she said reaching for her phone.

When she called the number, it rang, but she did not answer. She called severally, nobody answered. Then she sent a message, asking her to call her back once she sees her message. But she waited for hours, Anna's call did not rang her phone.

"What is wrong with my sister? This type of thing has never happened before. I hope she is OK, let me call home and tell them what is happening.............Hmm, it won't be a good idea to break such thing to them now to avoid putting them in absolute state of confusion and worries.
"The best thing to do now is to go to her hostel and ask her roommate, she might have a clue as to her whereabout" she said dressing up.

She headed straight to her hostel without calling her roommate on phone, because she does not have her number.
She knocked on the door, and fortunately Stella was around.

"Hey... Onyi. How are you?

"I'm fine my dear, see how you are shining, you don't even look like somebody who is preparing for exams, you are enjoying oo" Onyi teased

Stella laughed and said:"Onyi my dear, I have been reading since morning, i just decided to take a rest now, what about you, hope you are preparing hard?" Stella asked.

"My dear, that's the only reason I came to this school naa?" Onyi replied

"That's it oo my dear, and your sister, hope she is preparing too?"Stella asked

"My sister? It was because of her that I came here, I have not seen nor hear from her for five day now. I thought you might have a clue of where she went to"

"Ah ah, this is serious, then call her on phone" Stella suggested

"Stella, do you think I have not been calling, do you know how many times I have called her today, I even stylishly, called my younger brother to know if she went home, but he said no . Now, I'm beginning to feel scared. And I don't want to inform my mother yet."

"Has this type of thing happened before? I mean going somewhere without letting you know where she was going?"

"No oo, she used to inform me before going anywhere, this is why I'm suspecting that something is wrong, I'm now feeling scared, I hope she is OK wherever she is. I have to lodge a compliant to the school authority and to the Police" Onyi said

"This is exactly what I was trying to tell her the other day she came back looking tattered, wearing a bathroom slippers. She was restive throughout that day, when I asked her what happened, the kind of look she gave me eeh! So I decided to avoid her trouble, and minded my own business before somebody accuse me of poke-nosing." Stella said.

The bathroom slippers Stella mentioned rang loudly in Onyi's ear, her mind traveled down lane to the day she saw a slippers looking exactly like that of Anna's at Austin's place.

"Please can you still remember the day this thing you just told me now happened" Anna asked hoping for her response to fall off from the exact day she had in mind, because she can't stand her sister's betrayal.

"Erm, I don't think I can still remember oo.....hmm.....No.....I can't remember?"

"OK let me help you out....was it that day I came to look for her one morning like that?"

"Hmm, Yes! Exactly! That was the day she returned looking so worried and unhappy." Stella replied.

"Oh no, oh no, oh no, this can not be true, does it mean Anna "stabbed me at the back"?"

"This can't be happening, I have to be very sure, I have to." Onyi said in her heart.

"But Stella do you know where she kept the slippers she returned that day with?" Onyi asked looking so calm.

"I don't know oo, I think she has returned it to the owner"

"No need for further enquiries, it was her slippers that I saw that very day, Anna! Anna!! Anna!!! Is this how you are? Your own sister oo! Oh God, why is life playing me like this? First, it was Austin, now Anna! I can't believe this yet" She said in her heart weeping silently, acting not to be noticed by Stella.

"Alright dear, I have to start going now"

"OK, so what next now? I mean laying the complaint like you said" Stella asked

"OK, I will do that later, but I still have somebody else to call to know if she is with him" Onyi replied

"OK, always keep me posted on any decision you make, but I know she is in safe place." Stella wished

"Alright dear, thanks for your concern" Onyi said and left heartbroken.

"Heyi!! Is this how this world is." Onyi said trying to regain her sanity from the shock.
She continued: What should I do now? Does it mean she is at Austin's place? I have to storm there and catch them by surprise Nobody messes with me and go free. No wonder, is this why my spirit was not happy with her the day she said she had been reunited with her lost love? I must see to the end of this" she said getting ready to leave for Onitsha.

When she reached Onitsha, she met Austin driving out.
He wound down and asked her what she is doing at his place.

"Austin, so this is your plan with you and Anna, right?" Onyi asked looking so mean, burning with anger.

Onyinye, you have come with another strategy now, right? He asked laughing softly and continued: "I have told you to consider me dead in your life. Well, as you can see, I was driving out when you came, I am travelling to the village now"

When Onyinye wanted to utter another word, he wound up and drove out leaving Onyinye who was standing there confused, hurt, heartbroken and betrayed. The way he zoomed off reminisced her once again the day he broke up with her and drove away.

Episode 24

"But his house looks completely locked, which means nobody is inside." Anna sighed a relief and continued:"I think its time I call home and tell them what is happening, Anna is nowhere to be found. I hope she is OK wherever she is"

Immediately she pressed her phone to call her mother, Anna called.

"Anna! Oh my goodness!! Where are you? Worried Onyinye asked.

"I saw your calls now, I followed a friend to her village in Delta. The day we were leaving, I checked your place, but you were not around" Anna said

"But you should have called me on phone".

"We were in a hurry that very day, so I forgot to call, and my phone has been developing series of problems, sometimes I will not know that somebody is calling me "she lied.

"OK, try and repair it because, it feels bad when someone calls and nobody answers.... So when are you returning?"

"I'm returning tomorrow, and hopefully, I'm returning with good news"

"Wow, goodnews? Please gist me"

"Not yet, when I return"

"Hmm, Ok, I can't wait to hear it, and while returning, get something for me oo" Onyi requested.

"Yes, I will. What would you like me to get for you?"

"Hmm, anything you know I will like".

"Alright, tomorrow then" Anna said and disconnected the call and said to herself: "I know you must be getting yourself worried unnecessarily, that's why I called.

"What was I even thinking, I must be very crazy for doubting my sister's love. She is in Delta State and not in Austin's place, I have wasted my money for rubbish reason. Let me use this opportunity to branch home, since nothing is happening in school" Onyi said and headed home.
...........................................................

When Austin arrived his village, he never knew the reason Mama asked him to come and see her, the only thing she told him was that it was urgent. He rushed home thinking she was critically sick. But when he found her in good health, he relieved from the worries and started fighting his mind on why Mama called him.

"My son, how is the city? See how slim and shabby you look, you are not looking fresh, are you eating at all?" Mama worries.

He chuckled and said:"Mama, slim people are healthy people, so you want me to get fat and have a pot belly?"

"Don't you see how Ejike your brother is, that's why you need a wife to be cooking for you"

"Ma..ma! Don't worry, when the time comes, I will marry a good wife for you, who will also love you like I do, oo Nnem oma oo(Sweet mother) Agbara nwanyi!(Great woman)" Austin said praising his mother.

Her head swelled, laughing and watching her favourite son praising her, wishing for his child to be born soon so that she can carry him before 'kicking the bucket'.

"Mama, where is Obioma?"

"She went to the market to buy some food stuffs with her friend" Mama said

"Which of her friend, because I know some of her friends? Austin asked.

"Nwam, this her new friend is an ideal woman for marriage. Ever since Obioma came with her, she has been taking care of the whole house, cooking meals, washing my clothes, sweeping the whole compound. She is a cultured girl from a very humble background.
"She is the kind of woman I would love you to marry. In fact, i have chosen her already for you. Above all, she is beautiful and knows how to cook very well" Mama said eyeing him to know if he is buying what she is saying.

Austin laughed out loudly and called: Ma...ma! and laughed again:"This girl you are praising like this, she must be an extraordinary lady o. Seriously, I must see her, if she satisfy my eyes, then I will marry her for you?"
"Nwa ma obi Nne ya(son that knows the heart of his mother) but promise me you will not get angry when you see her?

"No Mama, and why should I?" Austin asked wondering why she asked him not to be angry." Or does she have any physical deformity".

"No, my son, don't worry, you will see her soon. Did your brother tell you anything on phone? Mama asked.

"The last time he called me was day before yesterday, he said we needed to see, that we have something serious to discuss"

"OK, he is supposed to be here, I don't know what is still holding him" Mama said looking at the compound entrance.

"Mama, is there any problem? You called me and Ejike as same time" Austin worries.

"No no my son, or is it a bad thing to see my two sons at same time? You know, very soon my journey will end. The other day I saw your father sitting at that his favorite chair waving at me, smiling"

"Stop it Mama, Papa died many years ago, you don't know what you saw" Austin shunned her.

"My son, when you attain my age, you will understand me better"

As they were still discussing, Ejike arrived, and Mama stood up to welcome him. After 7 minutes Ejike arrived, Anna and Obioma returned.
As soon as Austin saw her, his heart rumbled, boiling in anger that Anna wanted to use his mother to gain a space in his life.

"Mama, what is the meaning of this?"

"The meaning of what?" Mama asked.

"I mean her" Austin said pointing at Anna who was standing behind Obioma pretending to be shivering in fear, twisting her knuckles.

"What about her?" Mama asked disguising her gestures, so that Austin will not leave in anger because she can always predict what her son can do in any situation.

"Please sit down my son, you saw a woman and jumped out of your sit as if you saw a ghost" Mama said laughing, giving Ejike sign to sit beside him.

Anna and Obioma were asked to go inside to bring food for them.

"Mama, I don't want that witch to touch my food, infact I'm not eating" he raked.

"Nwam(son), will you reject your mother's food?"

"Mama, you will not understand, to tell you the truth, you will not understand"

"What is it my son? Tell your mother what happened, tell me"

Mama said pleading warmly in order to calm him down, convincing him to pour out his anger.

Ejike was just watching, waiting for the right time to throw in his own words.
Austin kept quiet for some minutes and told his mother what happened.
After recounting his pains. Mama who was listening very attentively said:"I was busy listening to know if you will mention a particular wrong Ebere committed, but none was mentioned, and from my years of experience, I can only understand you transferred your anger to this innocent girl whom you impregnated. I have observed her closely, and discovered she is a humble girl."

"So Mama, you are suggesting I marry her, do you understand I dont have any single love for her"

"My son, love builds with time, when I got married to the man your grandfather arranged for me, I never loved him, but with time, I discovered he was the best gift my father had ever given to me."

When Austin wanted to say something, mama interrupted:"Chijioke my son, that woman is pregnant with your child, don't abandon her or else any curse she lay on you will follow you forever, and I don't want to be in my grave crying, watching my son suffering in agony. Ebere is a nice girl, why not marry her for the sake of your child. Do this for me, I want to carry your child before I die"

"But Mama, things have changed, things are no longer done like they used to during your time. I will take responsibility of the child. When she delivers, i will bring my child home and.."

Mama cut in: "Without the mother? No, our God in heaven will never accept that, I don't want to have my grandchild, my own blood outside his father's land, please do this for your mother, give me this happiness before I die" Mama said shedding tears.

Ejike was watching them, he doesn't like the way Mama was forcing Austin to accept a marriage that might ruin his happiness, but he decided to keep quiet for the sake of their mother.
He only managed to advice him to do whatever he felt was right, but that was later that he told him this, not in the presence of the mother.

After watching how his mother was melting because of the issue, and all the persuasion, Austin decided to accept Anna but only to divorce her later.

"It shall be well with you my son" Mama said blessing her son

"Mama, I am only doing this because of you oo, not that I love her"

"Chijioke my son, with time you will come to appreciate making this decision. Now she is already pregnant, we need to be very fast before her pregnancy starts becoming noticeable. We need to see her people for introduction, then collect list for the traditional marriage requirements. I want everything to be done under two weeks."

"Mama, you did not even ask if I have that kind of money now"

"It's not stipulated you must do everything once. The main step is for us to declare your intention to the family, pay the dowry, the rest can be done in the upper months."

"OK mama, if you say" Austin said

Mama said yes, jubilating that her second son will be getting married. And soon she will carry her grandchild on her arms.
Seeing how joy and happiness were radiating on his mother's face, Austin was glad, atleast for the sake of his mother, he accepted the marriage.
Later they called Anna out, and broke the goodnews to her. But before then, she had already had the knowledge because she and Obioma had been eavesdropping. They went into wild jubilation that Austin had accepted her into the family.
She knelt down thanking them, promising to be a good wife, daughter Inlaw, sister inlaw to the family.

"It's OK my daughter, sit down, we called you to know about your family, your village, and to tell you the time we will be coming to see your people"

Anna said "Ok Mama" and sat down, rejoicing loudly in her heart.
"Oh my God, I can't believe this is happening, so finally, I'm getting married to my Cyko....wow"
When she remembered her sister, fear gripped her.
"How am I going to handle this? Onyinye does not need to find out until the wedding is over?" As she was still contemplating on what to do, Mama called.

"Ebby, seems you are lost in your world of happiness"
"Mama, I am the most happiest woman in the world today" Anna said

Mama was happy when she noticed the deep love she had for her son.
So after everything, Anna had to return home to inform her people about her suitor who will be coming with his family for introduction.
But her problem was Onyinye, she doesn't need to find out.
"How do I handle this now. Definitely, she will love to be at home the day they will come. What do I do now?" Anna asked himself contemplating on the best way to handle the situation.
Suddenly, an idea popped up. So she headed to school to check the exam time table to know the days Onyi have exams.
Luckily for her, Onyi had two exams on Friday, the day they picked to come and see her people.

"Yes! yes!! yes!!! She screamed in joy and said:"everything seems to be working in my favour, this explains it all, Cyko and I are match made in heaven, if not, God wouldn't be favouring me like this, God I thank you oo" she said bringing her phone to call Onyi.
"Onyi where are you?"
"I am at home" Onyi answered.
"Alright, I will be coming home in the evening"

Later in the evening, Anna returned home, met her siblings and handed them the things she bought for them.
Anna was the eldest child of her parents, Onyi was the second, and their third daughter was Nonye, the most stubborn of them all. And she had two younger brothers.
When she broke the news to Onyinye, she couldn't contain her joy. The news brought wider jubilation among the siblings. They started planning already on the colours for the Aso-ebis, colour of the day, and who will be the chief bridesmaid and all that.
She laughed listening to her siblings, but having a little fear in her heart of what will be Onyi's reaction when she finds out, would she continue loving her like she used to?
Onyi and Anna grew up to be like friends. People mistook them as best friends due to the kind of relationship they share. Only few knew they were sisters. Their type of relationship emanated when they were in boarding school. They share everything to each other without hiding anything.

Later in the night, she informed her parents the reason she returned home.
Her father kept quiet for a while and asked:
"Ebere, this man you said that will be coming to marry you, where is he from?
What does he do? And where does he live?

As Anna was answering the questions her father asked her, her mother who was suspecting some changes in her was observing her body.

After their discussion that night, her mother brought her inside her room and sat her down.

"Eberechukwu, tell me the truth, are you pregnant"
"Noo Mama, I am not." Anna denied.

"Shut up! I am your mother and with my years of experience, I can detect pregnancy, even as early as 3 weeks. Tell me the truth now" Mama ordered

She kept quiet for a while, and told her mother the truth.
"Mummy, it was a mistake oo, the devil's handwork. I have been a very good girl oo, I don't know how the devil dragged me into this" Anna said hiding her face in shame from her mother.
The mother was down in disappointment.

"Eberechukwu, you are the child who opened my womb, I never failed in my duties into bringing you to the ways of Christ and now you want to bring shame to this family so that I will become a laughing stock among my church people and the whole street." Her mother said sitting down in bewilderment.
"Mummy, I am sorry, its the devil's work........"
"Come on shut up your mouth" Mummy snapped in anger.
"Pray that man marries you or else, this house will not contain you and I. Come on, get out from here, useless child.
Anna rose up and left. And decided to inform Onyi since her mother is already aware. When she told her, she was surprised.

"How did it happen? You never told me you had a thing with him that day."

"I am sorry about that, just that I never had the month to tell you because you will scold me for it"
"Scold you, how? Since when did you start hiding things from me? This is so unlike of you oo"
"I am sorry, it will never happen again"

Onyi said OK and blurted:"But to tell you the truth, you bleeped up oo, somebody you just met, you dont even know if he is a HIV/AIDS patient, go and get yourself tested oo " Onyi asked laughing..
"Now you see why I never told you, because I know I bleeped up big time"
The two sisters laughed out and later slept off.

On the day of the introduction, Onyi was in school writing her exams. She felt so bad that she was not around, but it was not the big day, it was just for the introduction.

Anna had pleaded with her younger sister Nonye to give her her phone to snap the event, that her own had fault. Her reason was to prevent any means Onyi will findout that Austin was the man who came to marry her.

"Sister, this my phone is a gift oo, I don't give it to people anyhow, you might press something into it. Don't worry, I am here, I will do the snapping myself. And besides, you shouldn't be the one taking pictures. I will capture every moment." Nonye refused.

"Nonye, are you now saying I don't know how to handle a phone. Have you forgotten i started using phone before you?"

"Sister, you are not even understanding me" Nonye said and walked out from her.

"You stubborn child!" Anna said.

"I will snap the video for Sister Onyinye to watch when she returns, since her exams prevented her from witnessing the event. And she will be happy when I show her the photos plus the video. She will not miss much." Nonye said in her heart

To be continued............. Tomorrow is the D.DAY.........What happens.........? Its gonna be hot...between the two sisters...

Episode 26

Finally, Austin arrived Anna's family house for the introduction. Anna's parents who already knew she was pregnant accepted the traditional marriage ceremony to be done in two weeks time but only in a low key, an infamily ceremony, the rest will be completed in money form, so that people will not notice what actually happened.

Anna accepted, for the fact it went inline of becoming Austin's wife.
But Onyi was not happy. She wanted it to be a big traditional wedding celebrated in their compound atleast as the Ada(first daughter) of the family, it should be a big ceremony. She expected Anna to react, but she kept mute, so she decided to accept their decision.

On the day of the introduction, Nonye was busy taking pictures. Anna saw her but kept quiet, and targeted the time she will be sleeping. Things went smoothly. Partially, Anna was already Austin's wife, but not fully until the final marriage rite is completed.
Later in the night when Nonye was sleeping, Anna took her phone and deleted all the videos and pictures. In the morning, she was so confused on what happened, on how all the videos and photos in her phone got deleted.
"Sister Ebere, I don't know what happened to all the videos and pictures in my phone..... Wait oo....... its like the memory card got wiped out, there is nothing in my phone again" Nonye said looking confused, pressing her phone.
When Onyi requested for photos, none was given to her. Nonye explained what happened.
She said no problem, that the big day was coming, she will witness it.
The wedding preparations were ongoing, everybody was happy. Anna already had her plans of sending Onyi away.
On the day of the wedding, Anna and Austin had not started speaking to each other freely. Sometimes, he reject her calls when he is not in the mood to speak to her.

Meanwhile, Anna arranged with some gangs to kidnap Onyi for 7 hours in order to prevent her from witnessing the event.

About 2:0pm, Obioma called Anna and told her they are about coming.
Anna went to where Onyi was, pretending to be nervous.

"Onyi, Cyko and his family will soon be here, and my cake has not arrived"
"You made cake, what for? The ceremony is just a family thing, the cake won't be necessary" Onyi replied.
"But, Onyi I have paid for it already"
"OK, what do you want me to do now?"
"The woman said she can't come, that she suddenly started feeling sick, that she can't make it, that I should send somebody to come and carry it"
"But Anna, its already late now, forget it, and besides, I don't want to miss my big sister's trad, even though, its not the way I envisaged it to be"
"Onyi please, Austin...... I meant Cyko, and his people still have like 3 hours to be here, before they arrive, you must have returned, please sis, please, I will show you the shortcut to follow" Anna said pleading.
"Hmm.... Anna.......OK, give me the woman's address"
"Yea, I love you sis, you are the best....." Anna thanked her.

When she was leaving, Anna showed her the shortcut to follow, that the main road was closer if she follow that route. She said Ok and left, not knowing that the guys Anna paid to kidnap her were already mounted on the path waiting for her to pass.

On her way, she met an old woman who knew her father. She greeted her and passed.
"My daughter, where are you going?" The woman called her back.
"Mama, I want to follow this shortcut to get to the main road."
"Don't follow that road my daughter. I met some young men when I went to the bush to get something, they look dangerous and I have not seen their faces before in this village"
The woman instilled fear in Onyinye who did a u-turn immediately and followed the other part she knew.
Fortunately, the old woman saved her from falling into the hands of the kidnappers.
When she reached the main road, she boarded a bus going to town. As the bus was moving, a passenger tapped her from behind. When she looked, it was Kingsley, one of Anna's friends whom she had a drink with the day Austin accused her of leaving Onitsha to spend a night with her school boyfriend, blocking his number from reaching her
"Haa, Kingsley, oh my world! What are you doing in this village?"
"This is my village" Kingsley answered.
"Are you serious? Wow, this is a small world oo" Onyi said.
"That's it my sister. So, you, what are you doing in the village? Because, according to Anna, you guys live in the city." Kingsley asked.
"Anna is having her traditional marriage today"
"What! you don't mean it! She didn't care to invite her friends?"
"No, its just a family thing, the big event will be in the white wedding"
"But it doesn't mean anything"
As they were still discussing, their vehicle reached the final bus-stop and they alighted.
"And that reminds me, what happened to you that night?" Kingsley asked
"Which night?"
"That night we went to........."
"Ook.....Onyi cut in:"I remembered now. But what happened?"
"I meant, you got us all worried that night, you only took juice and started feeling tipsy, like somebody who took alcohol. I had to carry you to one of the rooms Anna paid for."
As he was still talking, her mind flashed back to Austin, on how he was accusing her of sleeping with her school boyfriend in the hotel, and how he held her that night.
"I don't think I have a vivid idea of what happened to me that night. Please I want to ask you something" Onyi asked
"Go on"
"That day, you held me on my waist, right?"
"Yes, but nothing attached to it oo, I was only helping you get to the hotel room as Anna requested"he replied laughing.
"OK, did any man come looking for me or Anna that day?"
"Yes, I saw her with one man that night, he rides one ash car like that. But why all the questions?"
Onyi laughed and said:"nothing. just wanted to confirm something." She said acting cool. Everything was now clear to her. And later they bid farewell.
"Anna... Anna... Anna...Anna..Anna.. Eberechukwu.. Anna..Anna"
Onyi kept callin her name, searching for the words to describe what her sister did to her.

"Is this why she kept calling Austin each time she wants to refer to Cyko. I should have known all this while. Should I rush back home now, or should I get the cake she sent me to get?.......Let me complete the message and return home" Onyi said crying bitterly in her heart.

When she reached town, she found out the address she gave her does not exist, she asked many people, but she couldn't find the address

"This explains everything...Anna, you are a demon inform of a woman. Anyway, let me reach home first, just to be sure."

1hr30mins later, Onyi stormed home, and saw Austin in their compound...... He was the one who came to marry her sister......
