Henry240:
Most crime in RSA occur way inland from the seas, that's why you don't have a piracy problem. Pirates are everyday common criminals who operate at shore or in the open waters. The lack of piracy in SADAC is as a result of the fact that SA criminals do not find it to be lucrative. It has nothing to do with the SA navy.
Let's get this straight.......One of the busiest shipping lanes in the world( Cape of good hope being the busiest in SSA) is not lucrative?.......So how can it be that Pirates can thrive in the Nigerian EEZ where there is less ship traffic and thus less income to be made compared to South Africa's EEZ??

Simple fact is we Patrol our waters better than our cousins up in the North.....It's that simple!

I dont think its that logical..... In my opinion, Piracy thrives when coastal town and vilages are remote with few government control......
patrolling is just a deterence to the pirates but not what stops pirates....
Anyway, in anycase there is a difference between having no piracy because you patrol your waters and because simply because there is no piracy 'cause of any otger reason.....
If lack of piracy were because of regular patrol, there would be plenty of examples were pirates have been arrested in SA waters...thats how you would know that its policing the waters thats preventing piracy....

Its like someone saying the reason we don't have terrorism in our country is because we are secured and we have good security systems......... while on the other hand, it could just be bacause no one serious and determined enough hasdeclared jihad on your whole country and persied his goals..... cause if it were because of security, there would be numerous reports of attempted attacks or plots or terror cells that were thwarted. before they could begin..... and thats why one would then conclude that security services have prevented that kind of thing...

So I would ask, how many pirates have been caught with their hands on the cookie jar in SA? How many supected pirates have been arrested with evidence(like weapons) off your EEZ and sorounding? how many potential pirates hideouts have been discoveted by police on mainland ? If you have info on that sort of thing, then that when you can conclude that indeed piracy doesnt exist in SA EEZ because of the goodwork of the coast guard and navy

Henry240:
The waters are very uneasy and rough down south in South-Africa, however i won't go as far as crediting the SA navy for the lack of pirate attacks in those waters. If this was the case, illegal fishing by foreign vessels won't also be an issue, but it is in South-African waters.

The thing with Southern African waters is, Pirates don't exist in those areas. Operation Copper is a good example, there hasn't be any single SA navy pirate take down in Mozambique were the SA navy is deployed in nearly 1 -2 years of deployment.

That's basically the difference.
No piracy because piracy has been pre-empted.

Fishing is a DWAF not SAN issue.

agree to disagree, im quoting @frumentuis " pirates need a permissible environment to base and establish home ports" The Mozambican channel was rife with pirates, just weeks before OP copper commenced there were two major hijackings within days of each other......now if what you're stating above is true, pirates simply disappeared in a matter of days for no reason at all?....as according to you it had nothing to do with a 130m long navy frigate that was all of a sudden patrolling those waters.

fact still remains we have the longest and busiest shipping lane in SSA, without a strong navy presence there will be piracy....the Mozambican channel is proof

as for terrorism....id say its a bit of both, there have however been several instances were they have caught terror plotters .

Got it from the spectators index.

Still this means countries with the best economy in Africa are spending less on military than others.
