Why Don't Nigerians Do Autopsies? by Nobody: 8:40pm On Jun 13, 2015
Why do newspapers report foolish things like "he slumped and died" or "couple dies after marathon sex"?

Does the government employ coroners at all??

Most reasons are sociocultural and religious. Unless a law is passed to make it compulsory and expedited autopsies can be done for those who want to bury their dead within 24hours, it may still be a tall order.

So many crimes have gone unsolved and many criminals at large due to this. But what do we do when the average Nigerian sees things as fate? Or when some religions bury their dead within minutes?

That's a good question for the first page. Lalasticlala and mynd44 this is a good question. Does anyone know the answer.

I guess the answer is that there are not too many well trained doctors to do it.

Brother pls don't make unintelligent guesses. It's soo off!
If I ask you why you opted for a ready made dress instead of a tailor made; or why you preferred a chemist prescription over going to the hospital, would you also spew this putrid stuff?
Think before you speak.

>It largely boils down to our orientation.
Religion and culture has messed us up big time. Even when in life, we don't take the sick to hospitals until he is about to breath his last, we'd rather try out spiritual interventions first. How much less in death?
>Another issue is poverty. Patients who can hardly afford to settle medical bills, are they the ones who'd request for an autopsy?
>Government cannot intervene in all deaths, except those who died under questionable circumstances in which a homicide /crime is suspected. Otherwise any inquest has to come at the instance of the bereaved.

> Lastly many of us would be like "who autopsy wan epp? Person wey don die don go na, would it bring him back to life?" We'd rather use the money to organize a glamorous burial. So much for orientation.
It also follows in the same line about organ donation. How many Nigerians sign up for organ donation?
Many of us simply abhor the idea cos it's not part of our culture.
Personally I have always said that I would donate most of my organs up for transplant, donate my brain for studies and research and the rest of my deceased body be cremated. No way would I allow such an intelligent self be wasted under the ground.
Pls no hating, is it your intelligence? grin grin tongue

The question you should be asking is how many trained doctors do we have in this country? And when I mean trained I mean by world class standards not the ones that can barely do a correct diagnosis And most importantly, how many of this guys do we have per capita? In other words, what is the doctor to population ratio? Show me the numbers then we can have a discussion or else there is nothing else to talk about sir. Have a good day.
