ScanEagle facilitates Kenyan attack in Somalia

Erwan de Cherisey, Paris - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

10 March 2017

Kenya Army units serving with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) used a Boeing Insitu ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to facilitate a successful intelligence-driven attack on the Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen group in southern Somalia, according to a Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) source.

This is the first confirmation that the ScanEagle system that was ordered for Kenya under a USD9.8 million contract announced by the US Department of Defense in September 2015 is operating in Somalia.

The ScanEagle detected a large Al-Shabaab force as it appeared to be preparing for an attack against Afmadow in Lower Juba province on 1 March, the source told Jane's.

Based on this information, the Kenyans in Afmadow assembled a combat group that was supplemented by a company-sized force from the Somali National Army (SNA) and proceeded to move on the evening of 1 March towards a concentration point 6 km from the militants' location, arriving there at midnight, the KDF source said.

The KDF set up artillery positions with 120 mm mortars and 105 mm L118 light guns in preparation for the battle, while infantry supported by Panhard AML-60 and -90 armoured cars and Norinco WZ551 armoured personnel carriers conducted final planning.

At 0600 h local time (0300 h GMT) the following day, Kenya Army Aviation Hughes 500 and Harbin Z9WE attack helicopters attacked the Al-Shabaab camp, targeting armed pickup vehicles, while the artillery fired a barrage. Infantry and armoured vehicles then moved in to mop up the area and suppress the remaining enemy forces.

The attack was concluded at 0845 h local time with no KDF or SNA casualties, while 57 dead Al-Shabaab militants were counted, according to the KDF source.

There are only 20, those are the 20 tracked by Sipri
Wrong Sir. Your own cited SIPRI states 43 total, with none coming post-2015 lipsrsealed undecided

23 modernized T-72 B came from Ukraine between 2014 and 2015
20 T-72 M1 from the Czech Republic in 2015. Check the logs again.

And fellow Naija ppl, edakun, why are all our T-72 used and so few,new thing no dey sweet us?!!

If I am correct we once bought 100+ Vickers MBT without any pressing need, so why all this piecemeal purchases at times of war?

T72's are 20 total

You got the D-30's in 1966

If you want to make assertions, post citations.
There's no point trying to prove anything to you if you don't want to keep and open mind, what citations ? Can your eyes not see the pictures I posted.

All these plenty, plenty comments are not required.

The only area in Nigeria were there is active, large scale military operation ongoing is the N.E.

Nothing of such exists anywhere else in the country apart from soldiers supporting regular police in flash point areas.

Patrols in the South-South are routine naval or military patrols out at sea or in the creeks. In the South-East, nothing of such exists.
Yes I know you havent get ly point, we cant say there is nothing in those area. And the military is always talking about those areas is the focus right now. I was arguing on way we need 100.000 soldiers not less because the military must be present in all those area. And for the way people talk about our current situation we cant blame the military on everything. Ones the civil war ended Dicon almost shootdown because there were nothing going in.... Today we are paying the price so people must stop blaming the military for what is happening but rather support them for wonderful job their are doing right now

I really feel like it's not about having the money, it's about the will to spend that money, Nigerian leaders have this state of mind were they prioritize the wrong things.

Those multi billion dollar arms deals are out of our reach for now as long as this state of mind (were defense is not a priority) is not eliminated.

To me the key to turning things around is a west African arms race, we need one radical leader in our neighborhood, one who understand the real threat terrorism is.

you need a neighbour who is going to threaten you,a serious rival.to tell you the truth most Africa countries don't seems to consider terrorism.the only period Africa was in an arm race was during the cold war, because our leaders feared the neighbour country could be conspiring with the KGB or CIA to overthrow them.i remember back in the 80's,the sound of kenya air force jets wasn't something strange to me

I wonder why the AML-60s are missing their mortars in photos #3 and #4 if they're being deployed for operational purposes.

This is not the first time I've observed KDF AML-60s without their mortars while seemingly on ops.
