You say these are the Youth of tomorrow? Majority are yet to even read what the policy is all about and they are commenting as if they reviewed it.
Educated but illiterates all I see above. With these youth, the future is in trouble

I can tell you for a fact that none of those SUV's those senators drive has custom papers, but then punishing innocent car users who have been driving their cars for several years and asking them to pay for customs duty which might have been underpaid by the agent in the first instance is uncalled for.
The customs also have a way of undervaluing your car only to harass you on the way and impounding your car to pay again for their deliberate action in order to make more money.
to me, it's all about revenue generation and not proper records of duty paid.

Silly policy Anyone against this policy is an Economic Saboteur!

Illegal importations is not good for our economy... they should pay their import duties.
do your import tarrif in the same level with the neighbouring countries. ,very simple. And thus nation will stop looking all this revenue. I wonder why small neighbouring countries to Nigeria will be better organised than Us. Every day we are there speaking one grammar or the other.

Making sure all vehicles coming in to Nigeria are duly paid for is one of the simplest thing on earth to do, with technology in 2017, this shouldn't even be an issue.

You don't even need any serious border monitoring!

I reject very spirit of backwardness plaguing this slow m0f0s.

I think what is wrong with the policy is the time frame the implementation will cover.
Since there is another policy that says Vehicle registration will be bound with custom duty, i think they should forget about any registered vehicle on the road and concentrate on the newly imported ones and those with car dealers without reg. number with effective from deadline given.
Otherwise our security agent e.g police, Frsc, Vio will just open another business venture aside from there usual "wey your particular"

Round 1.....NASS wins!

But, what is bad about this policy Why will some people enjoy ripping off government of proper dues You want importation to be free or what
that's not the point.

Motor vehicles already on our roads do not come with duty documents because the importer would have paid in bulk for all the cars he/she must have imported into the country. Hence only one document may cover that. How do you expect each of these vehicles to each have duty payment documents then?. Or how do you expect people to pay duty for something the importer has already paid for??

Doesn't make any sense.
that's exactly the point

THE Nigeria Customs Service has “put on hold” the controversial motor duty payment that has generated tension between it and Nigerians.

The decision to put the implementation on hold was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Joseph Attah, on Wednesday morning.

Attah said this was the outcome of the meeting between the Controller General of the NCS, retired Colonel Hameed Ali, and the leadership of the Senate.

As reported on Tuesday, Ali had after telling the Senate he would not honour the invitation extended to him to appear at plenary on Wednesday over the issue, rushed to the National Assembly where he held a closed door meeting with the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

In a statement issued based on the outcome of the meeting on Wednesday morning, Attah described the tension generated over the issue as “unnecessary”.

He said in the statement: “Following the unnecessary tension generated as a result of misconception and misrepresentation of the Nigeria Customs Service planned motor duty payment, the leadership of the National Assembly and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) met with a view to resolving the impasse.

“They both agreed that the proposed motor duty payment, though in line with the provision of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap C.45, LFN 2004 should be put on hold while the Senate Committee on Customs & Excise interfaces with the NCS for further discussions.

“While payment of duty on vehicles or indeed any dutiable imported item remains a civic responsibility of every patriotic Nigerian, NCS Management has directed that the exercise be put on hold while expressing readiness to engage the Senate Committee on further discussions to bring them on board to understand the importance of the exercise to national security and economy.”

Put on hold? The ill-informed decision to make motorists pay custom duty on vehicles they purchased from car dealers should be suspended indefinitely and not put on hold.

Proper planning, thoughtfulness, deep insight, scenarios evaluation etc. are all necessary for successful implementation of ideas, agenda or vision. Sadly these are usually absent in some if not most of our governments programs targeted at redressing the rot that has almost crippled our promising country.

Highlight me on the policy please

It was a policy that planned to punish car owners for many years of corruption and bad decisions by the Federal govt .. So here is how car dealership business works and let's use a big dealer like Elizade motors as example .. Motors imports 5000 units of Toyota corrolla and when his consignment arrives he uses his influence to get someone in the presidency or even the minister of finance in conjunction with the customs boss to get a blanket waiver or declares just 10 percent of the cars ...Around 3 am when Lagos is asleep they drive these cars out of the port at break neck speeds to various ware houses around Lagos (if you are a night crawler like me you would have run into such movts many time ) ..Some weeks later a hard working guy like after years of saving finally has his 5 million naira to buy a brand new corrolla and you approach Əlizadə motors who sells one nice piece to you with an arranged custom duty clearance and Elizadə sticker for effect...Note that while buying the car you have paid for any cost Elizade must incurred in bringing it in .... So here is what the new policy from Hammeed is saying :: that despite the fact that you were not privy to what ever arrangement the car dealer and the govt officials had in the past to sneak cars in, you will be the one to pay for the customs duty (a duty you already paid for as the cost of the car4 years ago) .. so here are question begging for answers

1 : why should the innocent car owner be made to pay failures of the Federal govt to enforce it's customs duty honestly?

2: Why are those who gave this blanket waivers not the the one paying for their mistakes

3: Why should the custom want to eat it's cake and also have it at the expense of the innocent car buyer

4 : Since many of the cars that would definitely default were bought many years ago at what value is the new illegal in country duty going to be paid ..

Please forgive my lack of paragraphs

Its obvious that this was for revenue generation, they tried it through the ncc with the data tariff hike and now this with the ncs, it's not over yet, they are gonna try again, let's just hope that we can once again dodge the next one, whatever it may be

I was stopped by Custom agents a few months ago and they demanded for my papers which i gladly handed to them. One of the youngest officers told me that I had made short payment and I told him NO since I had cleared the vehicle in 2014 when govt Xchange rate was N126 based on govt evaluation as at that time.
He went to his boss and he told i was right and the young man still insisted that I part with money and i told him no and he started raining abuses on me.. that i was disrespecting him by complaining to his boss, saying things like we no be mate and i'm several older than him because he had revealed his age. He rejected N500 by telling me that others were begging with 5k-10k. I had to give them 1k just for no reason.
They will finish innocent Naija with this policy
