Did you read the part where i mentioned 'Jet Blue'?

I am speaking from Experience dude, I have a PPL but opted to do other things, Piloting is for young chaps. Best if you are in your teens , IN the USA all you need is Your High School Cert or SSCE as we know it and above 18 to be eligible to commence the training. If above 30? i dont advise it. I live in the USA dude and i know all there is to know about Piloting.

Nothing is easy? living itself is hard, if you know how many processes your body engages in just for you to stay alive, youd know that life and everything in it is not easy!

Good luck to the boy...let him follow his dreams.

Brother, I have no intentions of being a bad person or to discourage anybody. Am just telling him the bitter and painful truth.

I just laughed when I saw the ppl and US part. Brother u dont know who n who is on NL. Ordinary PPL and u think u know what it is like. Am talking about ppl with Bsc, ppl, cpl with instrument, then frozen atpl (note i seperated them because it wasnt an integrated course), with type rating and hundreds of hrs on log book roaming the streets and looking something else to do and ur here talking about PPL.

Hello Nairalanders,
I am an undergraduate in a Nigerian university and I totally dislike my course of study. I never picked it anyways.

My passion is to become a pilot, and I'm ready to give it up here to pursue the dream. But I currently don't know how to go about this.

I need help about aviation schools I can apply to, both in nigeria and abroad, when thier application opens and insight about how friendly the fees are.

Please, I'll be grateful if anyone can give me insight of those that gives scholarships or loan to students, that can be paid back when once starts practising.

I'll greatly appreciate if the Mods can let this grace the front page.

Go to flying school!!! There are a lot of flying schools (many of them are private schools) in Nigeria. The most common option is to go to Nigerian College of Aviation in Zaria (it is cheaper but admission for pilot students is for science students only).

Can you please expantiate on this?
...the number of unemployed pilots surpass the gainfully employed ones,so much so that majority are taxi drivers and that's a fact
Once you are only pilot with no degree you are in a fixed hence the need for a degree(plan B)
Nigeria general aviation is non existent so new pilots do not have a ready system to be absorbed and build their hours
In other climes new CPL holders do not go staight to airlines, because of the legislature that prevent such but we do not have such system the Nigerian system hence a glut of pliots so do not waste your hard earn money

Becoming a pilot is all about time. How much time do you have considering your present age. If you are still in your early 20's, it's still ok to start now. Below are the factors you must consider before you consider a career as a pilot.
Age : 18 - 20 (Not compulsory but necessary).
Type of aircraft you wish to fly. Fixed wings (aeroplane) or Rotary wings (helicopter).
Rotary wings is not as competitive as Fixed wings but more expensive.
Cost of Type Rating. Most airlines in Nigeria operate on Boeing aircrafts. So be ready for any of the B series if you are sponsoring yourself to work in Nigeria.
Building your flight time is very important. No airline will employ you as a second officer if you don't have up to 2000 flight hours. This is the darkest stage for any potential pilot.

TRAINING
You begin with the ground school training for Private Pilot License (PPL) or HPPL for Helicopter. You will learn the basics on gound before the flight training which is the practical section with your flight instructor. Night Rating and Instrument Ratings is included at this stage. The Night Rating give you permit to fly before and after sunrise and sunset. You will learn more of rating during your PPL Training.
After your PPL, then you start Commercial Pilot License training (CPL / HCPL) and Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL).

TYPE RATING
As a pilot, you expected to specialize on one particular type of aircraft. That is where type rating comes in. We don't have a type rating training school in Nigeria, so you will have to travel abroad for this. Getting your Type Rating is a separate journey entirely (Forget about the 7 - 10 million naira that you spent during the first stage) You have to travel out of the country for this. Example of type ratings include, B747, B777, A320 etc with different price range.
please note: If you want to fly in Nigeria as a pilot, I will advice you get your PPL,IR, ME, CPL and ATPL in Nigeria before traveling abroad for your Type Rating.
I hope this will be helpful. Wishing you all the best.

If only they know what's going on, nobody will even entertain the idea of becoming a pilot in Nigeria at the moment.

Its not that easy brother. Frankly i would advice him to kill that dream of becoming a pilot. Except he has the money to burn, or he just wants to bear the name and not to earn from it. U would be amazed at the number of unemployed pilots in Nigeria. Speaking from experience...

Responses like yours is what deters well meaning people from commenting on here, My advise was not to you, it was for that boy that needed a push, where others have failed he may succeed, why do you have such a local view to things/ have a global view and help yourself, PPL is ordinary , but it still gives me the right to fly?

That little boy needs at least a CPL and Must be instrument rated for starters to be considered a commercial Pilot, this is just the beginning as he will still do many Simulations, Type Ratings etc. why shred his dreams because you have none?

That little boy needs a push and there you go shredding the little hope he sought to find on here. Show it from your words and stop being a Douchebag!!

Actually u dont need up to 2000hrs as a 2nd officer, they will employ u with even 300hrs or less, then they will have u on line training while u build up to 500hrs with them. Where do u intend to get money to build 2000hrs on ur own. Except u become an instructor....

You have to go to South Africa or America for your PPL and CPL which you will spend around 12 million naira or more. Then make sure you have money for aircraft type rating i.e specialization, commonly Boeing in this part of the world. If not you will be useless ooo, and type rating will cost you another like 7 million or above.

Firstly, You will need a college degree in Engineering filed such as Mechanical, Aeronautical, Physics, or even Computer Science.
Upon completing your 1st degree, you need to be enrolled in a flight school and gain about 300 flying hours experience on board. Then proceed to apply for a pilot licence...these will be followed by series of exams.

Take one step at a time. When you complete one of the above, you'll be one step closer to your dream career
