IJAW YOUTH COUNCIL (IYC) COMMENDS THE MUHAMMADU BUHARI LED FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR THEIR SHOW OF INTEREST, SPEED, AND ACTION IN TACKLING THE ISSUES OF THE NIGER DELTA REGION Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) World Wide wishes to commend the Federal Government for showing keen interest in issues concerning the Niger Delta Region in recent times and putting in place modalities to ensure the development of the region in line with the demands presented to it in previous interactions with stakeholders of the region. Firstly, the 30days ultimatum given to all contractors in the region by the Federal Government through the Vice President and coordinator of the Niger Delta Region (Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN) on the 21st day of March 2017, to return to site is really commendable; the Vice presidents directive to all contractors including those handling the NDDC projects in the region to within 30days return to site or face prosecution is one way that shows the commitment of the Federal Government to the plight of the region. The IYC lends its voice in support to say that forthwith all erring contractors that refuse to mobilize to site within the stipulated period should be prosecuted without any further delay. As these defaulting contractors have shown negligence and a lack of patriotism with such action. We particularly call on the contractor responsible for the construction of the east-west road to without further delay mobilize to site or face prosecution. All other contractors concerned should note that the IYC will not hesitate to assist in sending a list of all defaulters within the next 20days to the Federal Government. Furthermore, the IYC is pleased to note that the issue of the Maritime University at Okerenkoko in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State is being given top consideration by the Government and it is highly commendable that Ministries and Agencies saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the quick take off of the University have been directed to speed up action to ensure its commencement. The IYC is especially interested in the actualization of this project as it will foster the creation of jobs, bring development, increase economic activities, introduce educational opportunities, craftsman and improve the socio-economic life of the people in the region. Similarly, the IYC expresses its desire to see on sight activities implementing the clean-up of THE HYDROCARBON POLLUTION REMEDIATION PROJECT (HYPREP) IN OGONI land popularly referred to as OGONI CLEAN-UP and other areas adversely affected by the activities of International Oil Companies (IOC’s). The IYC commends the Federal Government for directing the Ministry of Environment to commence plans for engagement in the clean-up of other affected areas and hopes to see such implementation as soon as possible. Finally, the IYC commends the Federal Government for its effort to see the commencement of the Modular Refineries and its desire to enlist individuals in the Niger Delta Region involved in bunker activities to pass through the process of legitimacy from the government, certification, become shareholders in the proposed creation of Modular Refineries. This will go a long way to curb the menace of insecurity, pipe line vandalization, environmental pollution and degradation; and every activity inimical to the economic resources and wellbeing of the Federal Government and the Niger Delta Region in particular. It is our hope that only true Ijaw’s and citizens of the Niger Delta Region will be enlisted and due process will be followed. It would be recalled that there have been series of consultative meetings between the Federal Government and stakeholders in the Niger Delta Region initiated by the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) where a sixteen (16) point agenda was presented. It is therefore our wish to see the implementation of all other points in that agenda to ensure the total peace and development of the region. We call on all Ijaw youths to work together to ensure peace and development in the region for the benefit of us all. Haaaa Izon Barr. Henry Iyalla National Spokesman IYC World Wide. |
