This is the most insensitive government Nigeria has ever had. You've not created an enabling environment for manufacturers to thrive but you find solace in banning commodities that you don't have the local capacity to produce.

This form of harsh economic ideology cannot jumpstart the mirage of eldorado those idiots in Aso Rock think will happen. You cannot put the cart before the horse and expect to move forward. Provide the electricity and necessary infrastructures to an appreciable level before all these ban. For pete sakes, you are not producing anything yet and you expect manufacturing to start out of the blues cos of some BAN.

I don't know how they think in Aso Rock. It is obvious we have some bunch of dumboes in power who thought process is far off their behind.
Actually you are the one who is not conversant with the ways in which major economies of the word grow. Between the 19th and late 20th century USA engaged in heavy protectionism and this enabled local industry to grow at it's own pace in absence of established international competition this same method was adopted by Germany post world war, China untile recently , Korea also used this policy to protect local industry.

Any of the several acclaimed millionaires bin Nigeria hi doesn't see the obvious opportunity of a decent cut of $170million/year is not deserving of being called a business man. If I had access to capital I'd invest in a small processing plant myself

They are stupid.

If they really want to reduce the demand for dollar, why not deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry, privatise the refineries and kickstart this their modular refinery plan. In fact if they really wanted to reduce the dollar demand, this administration would've done this eons ago (on 30 - 5 - 2015).

Even a toddler knows that petroleum products are the main things that places a major demand on our forex reserves.

This is just to appease a few powerful men
patience, And they are enough tomato paste factory to supply Nigerians. well i only used fresh tomatoes over here in the north. But there are still some tomato paste we people dey sell for shop. though diffrent companies but all made in Nigeria. i Belive they deserve a chance

FG has just said that they would allow illegal refineries to continue operating if they can produce quality petroleum product... Dangote has said his refinery is likely to be ready by 2018.... As per privatise refinery... we don't know if that would happen they way the did with electricity GenCos and DisCos.

nigeria would never grow with your kind of mentality. Do you think there is good quality anywhere in the world. I have worked in production here in CA for years. All this oyinbo ppl do is hype. Their stuff is shit.
Who Told You We Don't Have Quality Bro? The Problem Is People Trying To Enrich Themselves By Giving The Company The Quality The Want There By Reducing Cost Of Production And Making More Profit. Am Speaking From Experience As A Mini Importer,Ask Those Who Import You Will Know More.

Exactly the problem I have with your lots, Did you read the caveat I put up there?

What was the infrastructural level of the USA in the period you mentioned? That was the period of the industrial revolution. Young man, you can built something on nothing and expect any meaningful development.

These knee-jerk approaches to issues won't solve anything. Try solving the basics of power to a considerable level and the value-chain will naturally act out.

I don't think you own a business in Nigeria and how frustrating it is when the cost of production overheads skyrockets on you and eats your capital.

Brainless leaders, how many tomato factories do we have in Nigeria?..... If u weren't brainless u would taken care of that first ...nigeria is known for their substanded product, do we have competent regulatory agencies to check mate its operations
Government has already taken care of that by this ban. Now more individuals would start setting up tomato plants... We cannot keep importing everything and this is the only way to discourage the import craze.

Nigeria currently has 2 major tomato paste producers, even if they dont have the capacity to produce all we need, with the current import ban, foreign tomato paste would become more expensive, Nigerians would begin to patronise Nigerian tomato paste and that will encourage more investors to set up new tomato plants. There os nothing brainless about this policy.

And you didn't analyse the situation to know that govt policy somersaulting is responsible for this?

Govt says no forex so he goes to China since cost of production would be cheaper. Now govt turns around to say there is forex and importation banned. I wouldn't blame him if he sees it as witch hunt or someone in govt trying to run him down.

That's how they banned importation of rice that we normally buy @7,500-9000 for home grown rice that we now have to thank the government after buying substandard rice @13000. Now its tomatoe paste. No problem, I just discovered cooking jollof rice or spaghetti with correct ingredients no need tomato paste so far you don get dry pepper, before I can't do without it, and I don't need tomato to make egusi or draw soup. And to make real soup, I use real tomato. So using tomato paste now, for me, is not by force.
using tomatoes for egusi n draw soup?what are u trying to cook??

There would never be an enabling environment for businessmen to set up tomato plants in Nigeria as long as foreign/china made tomato paste remains far cheaper and sweeter (in the mouth of most people) than made in Nigeria tomato.

We are npt producing enough tomato paste yes! But this is the only way to ensure we start producing more. This is the best policy ever to drive the tomato business.

Most of those foreign foods we consume affect us indirectly, Do you know what they use in production over there? we see the plastic rice and other stuffs.. Importation should be BAN to give local production more power..

It's a good move though but has the government made provisions on ground to meet local demand of tomato?
Since them don BAN rice have you not been eating rice?

I hope cost of production is not high? Because I trust Nigerians, high cost of production coupled with higher demand is a recipe for disaster.

Most of these companies import Tomatoe concentrate and the taxes have been increased from 5% - 50%.

Our government have no atom of sympathy for the poor.

Soon now Tomatoes will be expensive because it'll be out of season soon and the few ones will be mopped up by tomatoe paste manufacturers ( Erisco and Dangote).

Infact i don weak for naija matter aswear

Well, cost of productjon will definitely be higher, remember we have no light, poor transportation, poor govt policy, high interest rates etc. But that's the reason why the locally produced goods are more expensive than the imported counterparts. But then, we have to staty from somewhere.
