I beg to differ, Lexus certainly has more pedigree than Acura, considering the fact that it's older and has a wider model range. Technologically too, Lexus has the edge. Also, Toyota (Lexus' parent company) will forever be known for being the first Asian automaker to directly challenge the German marques. Others followed suit Honda (Acura), Nissan (Infiniti), and Mazda with the Amati (which never survived and died off)

You cannot compare Lexus that is a recent offshoot of Toyota to 91 years of continuous breakthrough, improvement and pace setting of Mercedes na.

Lexus should seek to grab more market share of young upwardly mobile people. Who will hopefully remain loyal for decades. So that 30 years from now, moneyed people in their 60s and above will consider it a genuine alternative to Benz.

But BMW, Audi, Nissan Infinity, Honda Acura and others are seriously making that young upwardly mobile segment difficult.

In reality there are no secrets anywhere. The level of improvement in the industry are across board There is nothing Mercedes knows that others do not know or cannot buy. In terms of actual quality measured objectively each year Lexus have topped in some surveys and only this year we hear that Mercedes is recalling 1 million vehicles because of "fire risk". That would still not change the perception.

The issue here is one of perception and that is what the speaker talked about.
Audi have been very clever in their marketiing and so no one or very few people make the association between Audi and Volkswagen. People's perception would be very different if they were marketed as "Volkswagen Audis" which bythe way,, d how it wad first marketed in Nigeria.

People think of "Toyota Lexus" and so when they buy a Lexus they always think they are buying a Toyota. It is hard to shake of that perception. Lexus needs to separate the two.
How any people know that Volkswagen owns the Porsche brand?. Maybe they should also consider a Formula One entry

I agree that many people grew up with the idea that "when I grow up I am going to buy a Benz" and that can be hard to shift no matter what and so Lexus should target kids who have not even learnt how to drive yet

True regarding across the board improvement.

Many young people I know using Lexus think it is the best car they have ever used. Only because that group are more adventurous & likely to try new things.

We all feel comfortable with what we know. If dad used his Benz for 15 years with minimal problems, that stays with you.

No matter how swanky a Skoda SUV might look, most will still prefer Toyata Prado, ML and such.

Hard earned reputation over time it is.

These days there are objective measures and rankings every year for reliability and safety e.g Most reliable car,Safest car etc. The Toyota Camry was top for many years in many measures.
If you ask people to make a list list of 5 thing which they use to compare cars they will struggle.You will find most people do not know anything about cars AT ALL.

Ultimately the idea for most people is; what will people think of me in this car? This is particularly the case for first time drivers.After over 20 years driving you are no longer taken in by appearances.

Even within a brand e.g Mercedes or Audi. Some models are Great and others are actually terrible.They are not all the same.

I am not sure whether the reputation is indeed "hard earned" it is more one of First entrant advantage and marketing. Mercedes has always been the mark favored by Heads of State when we were kids and that placed it in a certain space from a time when there was no competition .

Generally Toyota and Honda have consistently produced better quality than European marks
