You cannot compare Lexus that is a recent offshoot of Toyota to 91 years of continuous breakthrough, improvement and pace setting by Mercedes na.

Lexus should seek to grab more market share of young upwardly mobile people. Who will hopefully remain loyal for decades. So that 30 years from now, moneyed people in their 60s and above will consider it a genuine alternative to Benz.

But BMW, Audi, Nissan Infinity, Honda Acura and others are seriously making that young upwardly mobile segment difficult.

Lexus is very good in SUVs. The RX 330 and 350 are super hits/must drive. The success with those 2 cars can only be likened to the successes of Toyota Camry and Corolla in the past.

Now the Lexus LX570 monster costs like N60m. Is that a chicken change ? Some Nigerians tend to belittle the Toyota and Lexus brands yet they pray in their closet to afford them.

Talking of quality, service and delivery, Lexus and toyota are world best. They just need to remodel the body kits of their Lexus sedans. They are nothing to reckon with...

I don't think we should make too much about the interior or cars these days. Those things are available to all manufacturers and often are outsourced to other firms it all comes down to money and pricing. They are easy to imitate

The question is what if anything can any car manufacturer do that others cannot copy.This comes down to issues like quality and the Japanese companies appear to have a slight edge.

The next question is in the luxury segment of the market do the customers know this and are they prepared to pay for it.The answer is No!! That is the problem Lexus have that has triggered this lament. If you take a pair of jeans ,the same jeans and put the Gucci Tag on it you can charge more that Hugo Boss. Why? That is the problem Lexus have. Not a lack of quality but a perception that it is not quite the best
Toyota needs to stop cannibalizing itself . I do not see why it is making SUVs that are Toyotas that are very similar to the Lexus jeeps .This weakens the Lexus brand. They should learn from Audi

I beg to differ, Lexus certainly has more pedigree than Acura, considering the fact that it's older and has a wider model range. Technologically too, Lexus has the edge. Also, Toyota (Lexus' parent company) will forever be known for being the first Asian automaker to directly challenge the German marques. Others followed suit Honda (Acura), Nissan (Infiniti), and Mazda with the Amati (which never survived and died off)

You have not driven a Honda before. Toyota Is way behind in their tech designs.

Some cars that are sold as Skodas in poorer countries are badged as VW Passat in Europe and marked up in price by up to 50%

But still, most only came under one roof later, as you mentioned. The reputation or rather perception from the past is hard to shake off.

Sure, most countries now have minimum safety standards cars must attain to be allowed on the roads.

But only very few bother about details of safety test results.

Agreed. In addition, their problem can be narrowed down to the body kit for their Lexus sedans.

Lexus SUVs sell well. Eg. The GX 470 is legendary and very costly.

Merscedes has this problematic SUV model called GL series. That car is always stopping on the highway for trivial issues no matter how new it is. I just assisted one driver last week. I think reliability should be the first point to consider when choosing a car.

Reliability isn't always the top priority as reason for car choices are sometimes subjective and personal. car buying for me is like a relationship.

Think the guy is correct..... Lexus is no longer a stand out.... almost always like a rebadged Toyota. At first, it was a stand out. ..the Lexus LS 400 really upstaged the Benz and was the car to have. They lost their way after. Nissan was the same... upstaging the luxury segment with the very quick and nimble Infinity Q45.... a yatch looking speedboat! They too lost their way until a new boss made a similar confession. ... Nissan would be refocusing on what gave their cars reputation... speed...and out came he Nissan Altima in 2002.. and others..making any cars in their class eat dust. Acura made waves in the luxury department with the legendary Acura Legend ....1991 to 1995. They lost their way since then and been losing reputation since...except for the earlier Acura MDX SUV. Lexus is still a major player .... reliability is wayyy above image... they are now trying to capture image. German 3?...German machines?...unreliable...shut down at any time ...just like that. A friend's 2 yr old BMW shut down on him... just like that.... faulty fuel pump... still waiting for replacement by dealer.Waiting for Lexus to be Lexus and not luxury Toyota!
