Obiano Signs Anambra Airport MOU (Pictures) by viviangist(op): 10:02am On Apr 11, 2017
Today, Anambra State under Governor Willie Obiano signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would ensure the immediate commencement of work on the proposed Umueri International Cargo Airport with a view to having the airport ready for use in three years.

The agreement was between the Government of Anambra State, China Aviation, Orient Petroleum Resources Ltd and Elite International Investment Holdings Ltd.

Following the successful agreement signing ceremony, Governor Obiano will flag off construction work on the site designated for the airport tomorrow in Umueri.
Quick Facts about the Umueri International Cargo Airport -

1. The project is actually an Airport City Model which will be developed as an integrated city comprising of an Airport with two standard runways, a shopping Mall, Industrial and Business parks and an Airport Motel
2. The Airport will be located on 1500 hectares of land with enough headroom for expansion.
3. The Airport will be constructed under the Build-Operate-Manage-and-Transfer (BOMT) model.
4. 3% of the profit made from the Airport will be reserved for the host (Umueri) community
4. When completed the airport will create 1200 direct jobs.
5. The airport is estimated to cost something in the region of $2bn.

Great, I hope they sincere and serious in the execution of the project and not another political project just to hoodwink the electorate into voting for them in the upcoming elections. Only time will tell!

Why is it that every state wants to have an airport when most of the existing airports are not functioning. Asaba and Enugu airports are close-by, why not invest in a rail system for mass transit in Anambra then the airport can come later, but this is better than donating Hiluxes to the Army which already has huge annual defense budget by Gov Ganduje

Nice one, this is how huge investments are done, make sure that everyone contributes to the payment inform of joint partnership, as such the fund will easily be sourced for and it will be easier for government to finance.

Seaport is what we need more but all the same it is a welcome development.
Re: Obiano Signs Anambra Airport MOU (Pictures) by PapaBrowne(m):
While I will commend whoever is responsible for trying, I like to be realistic.
Come on, aren't we all tired of seeing photo ops of MOU's that never get off the ground?
I am typically an optimist, hardly ever a skeptic. But I know this is just political showmanship.

First, no reasonable private entity would spend $2 billion to build an airport facility in Onitsha which is sandwiched by 3 airports all less than 100km away with combined passenger numbers of less than 200,000 yearly.
Asaba Airport= 18km. Owerri Airport: 78km. Enugu Airport= About 100km. It wouldn't make economic sense in the next 15 years.

This splintering into states is one of the biggest problems we are having as Nigerians. I'd rather Ndigbo champion as a collective, on a regional basis, real projects that would transform the entire South East region into one massive economic behemoth.

A high speed 350km/hr rail line from Enugu-Awka-Onitsha-Nnewi-Owerri-Aba-Port Harourt-Onne is barely 300 km and would make 10 times more sense than building another airport with shopping mall and hotels for $2 Billion.
At $10 million per KM, Spain built the Madrid-Albacete high speed line. China can do it for less. That means with $3billion you can build an Enugu - Onne high speed rail line of 350km/hr.

Build numerous industry specific industrial clusters with 24hr independent power plants along the rail pathway. Focus on the potential to move manufactured goods from these clusters to the Onne port for onward transport to the rest of Africa. And you will see the speedy transformation of the south east into Africa's greatest economic hubs.

Imagine being able to move from Enugu to PH in 1 hour? Enugu to Onitsha in 20 mins? Onitsha to Aba in 30 mins? Imagine.

And the money is easy to come by. The Ndigbo private sector would raise this money in a second. Just 20 Ndigbo business men putting up 10 billion Naira and this project is already half funded. Another 100 putting up 2 Billion and the project is already completed! The rest can come from loans. And the south East changes for ever!!

Once again I repeat, Anambra doesn't need another airport not in the next 15 years. A collective regional plan that would seek to transform the entire region is better off.
