Because it was the day Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice for atonement of sin and eternal salvation of humanity.

Prior to that time, animals were offered for atonement of sin, but only for a season.

Jesus' sacrifice was eternal.

The sacrifice wasn't easy though, as Jesus asked the father if He was willing, to take away the cup from Him.

So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him
