it depends. A big engine Peugeot is 20litres my dad has it, he changes car but not that particular one. Honda Odyssey is 15litres I tink. my friend drives one.
last last it all depends on the product

I doubt the 20liters reserve for Peugeot.

Even the Toyota Prado and landcruiser that have two 90L tanks does not have reserve level of 20litres.

I think what causes the difference is the fuel efficiency of the car. A very fuel efficient car will travel more distance on a 5L reserve than a bad fuel efficient car with 10L reserve. For example, a diesel car with a reserve of 10L will travel almost twice as much distance as the same car with 10L reserve petrol.

Reserve is a percentage of the tank. Also, there is a very small percentage of the tank that is totally unusable to prevent pulling up dirt and water that might have settled in the button.

My car shows yellow light when low on fuel and with that it can even run 4d whole day... meanwhile my car consumption rate is very high coz on a normal basis i use more than 20 litres a day hence the question
Even on V6 engines still too high.Better buy a new car

I don't know but Honda Accord of ALL cars travels the longest distance (75km/hr) as soon as the low fuel indicator light comes on.

I have tried it with my '03 Accord. I travelled a distance of 90km and then drove into a filling station and put off the engine, the car refused to start until after a while.

My speed never exceeded 100km/hr, I wind up all my mirrors to eliminate drag, did not use AC, was alone in the car, no heavy loads in my trunk, maintained one gear and never braked hard. Well, the road was good - Abuja to Kaduna.

Since I bought a new fuel pump 2 yrs ago, I've never allowed the fuel indicator to show any light before topping up.

You mean you did Abuja to Kaduna starting from reserve? Wow!

Anyway, I believe it because I use like 2k fuel from Zuba to Kad. My normal speed is 140km/hr. I usually buy 2.5k fuel and will get to any location in Kad. I have never emptied my tank.

Technically, a car has no reserve tank. As in a separate tank to reserve fuel. However, what obtains is a reserve level.

This is the level you know approximately how much fuel you have and how far it could take you while finding a solution to your low fuel level.

Mine doesn't show any lights at all. Could that be the design or do you think something isn't right?

Kaduna to Abuja is 185km
Kaduna to Zuba is 165km.
The Low fuel indicator came on about 60km into the journey.

By my calculations, Zuba to Kaduna all things being equal should consume at best N1,650 - 11.4L of fuel and N2,350 16.2L at worst.

2003 Honda accord is stated to have a 67L tank. Usually, the pumps clicks for me at the range of 50-55L depending on how low on fuel the car is. By my assumption, 10L should be the reserve.

10L should get you 90 miles at very best and 64 for worst case. Usually it cuts it somewhere above mid way so 80miles would be probably it. If you add the 60miles you traveled before the light came on, you will get 140 which should get you around Abj junction in Kad.

That makes your estimates right. You make me wanna take the risk sometime.

it has never dropped to red cus you quickly top up

next time ignore the yellow until it turns to red which can still take you up to 2 kilometres
.

try this experiment by keeping 5 liters of petrol by your side in case the car stops
.

some big cars also have a bleeping alarm when the red warning must have been overstretched
Ok, thanks. But I hope driving on yellow does not pose any serious harm to the car.

It took me to Total Filling Station in Kawo where it stopped and refused to start for a while.

It's not even a good habit to allow the yellow light to warn you before you buy petrol in your car

I drove with petrol red signal till it got exhausted while having 5 liters of petrol by my side

I did that to ascertain the distance it could take me especially in a fuel scarcity period

As it's said that experience is the best teacher, I've to go through experiment to understand how it works

That's farther than I expected. That's Zaria road. Should be up to 155miles from Abj. Guess ur cat is well and your car fuel trim is running on closed loop.

Mine is on open loop with bad cat and bad O2 sensor. It used to be well until the cat got blocked and the mechanic killed the O2 by hitting it.

Anyways, not a good thing to do though you weren't on high speed. You know fuel pump cools itself with the fuel it sits inside, such low fuel for that distance would reduce the life span of your pump considerably.

U have made lot of sense thou

the said car is a 70 litre vehicle. I have forgotten the size of the engine but it's a big one.if I do I will tell you, maybe you may acknowledge it.

The car starts giving warning ones it's 20 litres
I may be wrong but that's what I can remember my dad telling me.

Mind you, my dad is a mechanical Engineer. so has massive knowledge about mechanical appliances.

Like I said,I may have forgotten his teachings
All same tanx for ur contribution
