I think one of the major factors is when a student already has the mindset that mathematics is a "no go" area right from primary school.
Qualified teaching and standardisation of school also matters a lot (80℅) of a students performance.Students are not even given the incentive to motivate them to have positive behaviours towards mathematics. The high rate of exam malpractice has made students lazy knowing that expos will be provided.Inadequate teaching really made our educational standard to go rapidly down.JAMB is the only sure test of intelligence but unfortunately, the teaching standard of Nigerian schools is too low to meet up with the standards set by various exam bodies.

prof, you are right but a lot of students detest attaining mathematics classes.,this is the major cause
They detest maths because many maths teachers are very poor in methodology and teaching techniques. They are uncreative in their job therefore boring students off.
Some male maths teachers in my secondary school days always wanted to create the impression that maths was a tough subject for geniuses, they appear haggard, unkept and uncut hair as if it's the maths that made look like that.

Hahaha I feel you my brother.

You and I are two opposites.

I understand things better when they are put in mathematical terms.

I never had less than 'A' in maths from my SS1 down to Mat 101 and 102 in the University.

The problem for people who do not know maths starts from they running from the science class.
Then next they'll see maths as a subject that should only be taken serious by the science students.
Next also they hate the period for mathematics.
They also dislike the maths teacher added with the already lost interest in the subject they perform woefully.

We that were 'good' in maths then we're like Kings amongst our mates in school. Some hated us for it.

I was not the best maths student in my secondary school but I was among the best 10. We were just collecting A1 in maths like any how.

I took that even to University level where I also flogged maximum As.

I read Geology as first degree but Economics as Masters(Petroleum Economic).

My lecturer at MSc would say heaven and earth, I would just be waiting for him to put what he is saying in mathematical equation form. With that I will understand better and it sticks.
If you stopped studying maths in level 100 then you've not done any mathematics. Truth be told, the subject is tough though at secondary school level, it only requires concentration and hard work. But when you go higher to study pure mathematics even prof will admit say no be beans at all

Prof Onah Taught me in federal university of Agriculture mkd years ago and he love me maths a lot and free style without using book even when I be president of NAS(Non Academic Student) I love his classes.

I strongly agree with Prof.
I've been in teaching profesion for few years. The major factor behind poor performace of students in Mathematics is lack of qualified teachers to teacher 2 train d subject. It is my strong belief dat if qualified teachers are appointed by govt and proprietors of private schools, and also if student are admited or promoted to their respective clases base on merit, then, we will have record of good performances in maths exams conducted by either Neco or WAEC

I don't agree with this submission of unqualified teachers. We have brains that can do the work but we regard certificates more than anything else in Nigeria. Let them deal with the hydra-headed monster they have created along the years.

How do you determine a qualified teacher?

I don't agree with you on the emboldened part of your comment, albeit it's your opinion. What happened to continuous assessment?

Our pattern of education is also not encouraging. If something is not working, change it.
I've been hearing that pass rates in UTME/UME (whatever they call it these days) is not encouraging but every year they keep selling forms. Only after their greedy pockets and not concerned with the educational status of the nation.

The reason why i said so is because JAMB has completely reduced malpractice because its computer based test.

Reduce malpractice at individual level but increased it at syndicate level.

I learnt more of maths when doing business or trying out a business strategy or even when making strategic betting decisions (lol).

In school, I was terrible. I basically paid my way to pass maths subjects! I was really bad. Any maths day was a bad school day for me. But English, wow. Government? Sweet. Even Accounting? Loved it. And our Maths teachers did like they were the forth members of the Trinity. Aside from the fact they were the teachers that knew how to flog, You dare not asked silly questions else you would either be flogged for stretching the class or jeered for being a dull brain.

And I ask... Why am I knowing it now when I'm through with schooling in business field and not when in school?

Many Maths teachers are blessed mathematicians but are not practical with their teaching. Everyday situations and decisions of life teach maths better than genius maths teachers in our schools! Any dullard will understand anything the moment you relate the issue to a personal incident. Eg. finance. All this "find X, find w"...without trying to relate it with something practical, will only make it theory.

We do some form of maths everyday. But I think that just as you develop and study English in practical (even though it's a theory based subject) to be able to communicate with others, rather than being a grammarian, Maths and it's study should be taught practically (and applied to an "off maths" issue) rather learning maths to come to nairaland and say "I sabi maths".
Keep deceiving yourself. What did you learn from your business that is beyond basic arithmetic? Bearing and distances? trigonometric identities? Integral calculus? or perhaps Baye's theoremhuh

Students don't see any incentive in learning mathematics. All of us when sabi maths like me how job market?

Teachers are not motivated to do more, cos oftentimes they're thinking how to make ends meet. I've taught Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, from secondary through, and post-NYSC. So I speak from experience.

Companies prefer to pay millions to 'entertainers' rather than celebrate brains, even in their companies. BBNaija just ended and someone took home a whopping 25m. Imagine putting up a tenth of that amount as price for a national mathematics competition?

I sat for a number of mathematics quizzes in my secondary school days. Till date no results. We were given notebooks for winning in quizzes. The highest price I recieved was an umbrella and some NNPC-branded notebooks for competition at the state level of NNPC national secondary school quiz competition. I even have a friends from my school who won the National competition but never got some of the supposed scholarship money.
Compare that to a person who goes on project fame and bags millions.

Put the blame where it belongs. The whole system needs a hard reset.
True. I have similar experiences.

One was in a school where I taught chemistry some years ago. I noticed the deficiencies in their further mathematics notes (the teacher was a maths teacher - not science inclined!), so I decided to assist. From there, they started begging me to take physics classes, even after I told them it will not be reasonable, since I'm no authority in physics, to now begin to handle even students that were about to take WAEC exams. Work load almost killed me before I left; coupled with the delay in paying salaries. Any incentives you may ask; "hell no" there wasn't any?

Very very true.

I always advice anyone who isn't going into a core art coursre to simply take science.

Our educational system in Nigeria is so ill structured. What is commercial class? You are neither here nor there.

At the end of the day, promising minds that have a dream of pursuing a career in economics and accountancy or related courses end up meeting the same mathematics they ran from. While their science counterparts took the same economics and commerce that is the core of their new found class, and understood it better due to solid background in mathematical theories, equations, calculus and statistical analysis!

Even in JAMB, both science and commercial class students are assessed by the same "further mathematics". Why not simply restructure everything to get simply SCIENCE and ART, so it will be very easy for high school students to choose from a wide variety of options to pursue a career after high school. In most developed countries, students take everything!

I learnt a lot.

At least, the probability of a proud slowpoke responding will be high.

Someone else responded, even disagreed, but very objective with his opinions.

You on the other had, so sad.

See him bragging genius all over.

I've said what I said.

Just saying so jokingly didn't actually mean harm. I'm sorry! That's why at times it's better to express oneself in person than behind the letters of keyboard. Once again, ACCEPT MY APOLOGIES.
