u don't even have to.. Its not a big deal. It means you are accepted into d family... Its a compliment sort of.

For any marriage to take place in most African settings, the family of the groom actually goes to the bride's family to seek their daughter's hand. That might not have been in your case but you are welcomed to the family non the less.
