President Donald Trump hinted at stipulations for the US deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system that is being activated in South Korea. Trump said that he wanted South Korea to pay for the anti-missile defense system, which he estimates to cost $1 billion, and also intended to renegotiate or terminate a free-trade pact with the country because of a "deep trade decificit," Reuters reported. When asked when he planned on renegotiating the "horrible" trade agreement, he said, "Very soon. I'm announcing it now." However, South Korea's defense ministry rebuffed Trump's remarks, saying that there was no shift in the "basic position" and that the US should pay the cost of installing and operating the THAAD, as stated in the Status of Forces Agreement, Yonhap News reported on Friday. bigtt76:The US military has an agreement to defend south korea long before Trump came in. He is just asking them to pay more because their mortal enemies have gotten stronger and it will cost the US tax payers more money to defend south korea. That is smart. |

If war breaks out, both parties with surely lose and THAAD can't protect everything. South Koreans recently protested about this THAAD thing. ollah2:No, they are not. The US is the reason why south korea is prosperous today with strategic and deliberate outflow of investments from the united states into south korea sanctioned by the white house over the decades. They should be very grateful to America. They owe their existence to the united states even in the face of the mortal threat from North korea. And besides, they can definitely afford to pay. Access to the full military assets of the greatest nation in the world should not come cheap. It is going to cost them trillions and trillions of dollars to upgrade their own military to a standard where they can actually defend themselves against North korea and possibly china. Joining North korea is stupid. Kim jong un will not relinguish power and they will never be free. And they will giving up a lot of economic benefits for nothing. |

vantage001:SERIOUSLY?! U.S. is charging for "protection" now? Sounds ALMOST like extortion to me. How does paying for THAAD means they have access to full military? Next, Trump should demand that America's allies pay tax to the US government. The US puts military bases in other countries to occupy them, and instead of paying rent for the land, he wants them to pay for the occupation. So the THAAD system is a poisoned gift for South Korea. First, with the THAAD, South Korea has become a military target not only for North Korea but, more importantly, for China and Russia. The built-up of Chinese forces close to North Korea is directed not against North Korea but against South Korea. Second, South Korea has become an economic target for China. The Chinese will boycott South Korean companies and businesses in China and they will shun South Korea as a tourist destination. And now, the head of the mafia is asking South Korea one billion dollars as protection money. Can you imagine a world where each country only has military bases within their own borders? I am sure it would be more peaceful than this current situation? The cooperation in charge of that, UNSC is an extension of Pentagon and the only language Pentagon understands in war. Does it mean that every country that house US military will pay tax or levy to the American government . Or is there an agreement somewhere. Somebody should explain better |
