Sunday is always a really busy day for me. I'll drop an update before heading to church. I can't promise another one just yet
Re: Hidden Diamonds by EvaJael(f): 5:55am On Apr 30, 2017
"Mille, how are you doing?" I asked her. She just kept mute and stared hard at my face. I was shocked. Mille would never ignore me even when she was mad at me. I asked her a dozen more questions but she just kept staring. Next thing I knew, tears started gliding down her cheeks. As I carried my hand to wipe them off,the door flung open.
I opened my mouth to speak to the figure at the door but no words came out.
He came close to us,his face bearing both an expression of anger and sorrow at the same time.
We looked at ourselves for close to twenty minutes. Neither of us could utter a word.
"I really don't know what to tell you kids",the bass voice of my dad filled the room.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there when this happened. I'm as pained as you are right now. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would lose my wife;your mother like this." He was interrupted by a loud scream from Jamille.
He raised his head for the first time since he started talking. His eyes were bloodshot.
"I took the first flight from Abuja down here to Uyo this morning." He continued.
"I'm really sorry guys. We must never forget that the Lord gives and takes away" A tear rolled down as he said this.
By this time,Mille and I were sobbing really loud. He pecked Mille on her forehead. He gave me a pat on the shoulder before walking out.
Later that day,Mille was discharged and we went home. It was a Sunday but none of us thought of appearing in church. We were worse than broken.
Throughout that week,we rarely spoke at home. And when Dad and I spoke, Jamille never contributed. The highest she would reply was a nod. Dad didn't want to keep my mum too long so he fixed her burial on the next Friday. He didn't plan the regular Nigerian burial. He just wanted a small burial with family and close friends knowing that mother never liked elaborate ceremonies.
The burial day came. We went to church for the service. Jamille cried till she was red all over. She was clad in a black knee-length gown with a pair of black fancy slippers. She covered her face with a black transparent veil all through the service. Dad and I wore black suits with black shirts. I didn't listen to a single word from the preacher's lips. I was just staring at the pulpit, thinking about my lost gem. Finally, the service was over and we proceeded to the house for the burial.
Sympathisers went on with their condolences till it became annoying. Their "sorry" wouldn't bring my mother back to me. I had to keep mute and accept their condolences out of courtesy and respect for my late mum.
Mother was buried at the backyard,at a spot close to the garden she cherished a lot. Dad and I were the only one who witnessed the lowering into the earth. Jamille couldn't stand it. She ran past everyone standing around the grave. I heard the door of her room slam shut. At least,I was sure she was safe inside the house. I remained there till the grave was covered up. Dad had to leave so as to escort the visitors out and thank them properly. When my legs started aching,I went inside.

I went to Jamille's room but the door was locked. I went back to my room. My Infinix Note 2 started ringing on the dresser. I picked it up. It was my best buddy,Judah. He was the closest person to me apart from Jamille. We had been best friends since JSS1.
"Hello" I answered in a sullen tone.
"What's up buddy? Tomorrow's graduation o. Any new plans?" He bombarded me with questions.
"None at all, we may not be there tomorrow". I replied him.
"Wait...why are you sounding so down? What's wrong?"he asked.
"I lost my mum on our prom night" I replied him.
"You have got to be kidding me. How come you never called to inform me?"
"Apparently, I was too broken to even know where my phone was till yesterday"
"OK man,I'm coming over with dad this minute" He said and cut the call. He didn't even give me time to protest.
I just dropped my phone on the floor and held my head in both hands. I was still feeling her everywhere. Her voice was ringing loud in my head. Her face was just everywhere I turned. I thought I was finally gonna go crazy with pain.
True to his words,Judah arrived with his dad in about an hour's time. I heard his footsteps as he came upstairs to my room. He barged in without knocking as was his way of life. On a normal day, I would feign anger, but today, I was in no mood for such. I didn't even acknowledge his presence. He began talking the usual blah blah about taking heart. He was also close to my mother. Soon, the tears started dropping from his eyes. I had always known him to be the emotional one. He finally realised how life would change without my mum. Him,my sister and I were always talking with her after school everyday.
At a point,I couldn't take it anymore. I got up and punched the wall. I screamed "why?". I yelled at the top of my lungs.
Dad and Judah's dad came rushing upstairs. Daddy held my hand, pulling me gently from the wall to the bed. Jamille came in and left almost immediately. I hugged dad tightly and I wept my eyes out. He patted me on my back along with Judah's dad. Judah's dad announced that he had to leave because he had matters to attend to. He asked Judah to stay behind. I thanked him and he took his leave. Dad left after sometime, leaving Judah and I alone to our thoughts.

Its not fate now oooo. Its what you hold for them because you are the one deciding their life for them the pen is in your hands, you write the story , you decide their fate.

Jamille

I was awakened by a knock on my door on Saturday morning. I mentally cursed the human who would not let me be. I walked over to the door and opened it . Judah stood there smiling. "Good morning Jamille". He waited for my usual nod before continuing. "I have to head home now, today's our graduation. Jason said you guys aren't coming so I thought I should come say goodbye."
I hugged him briefly and waved him goodbye.
Since the sleep had disappeared,I decided to wash up and surprise dad and Jason with breakfast. For a whole week,we'd been feeding on snacks only since nobody had a head clear enough to cook.
I had my bath and wore a black and white, polka dotted gown that stopped few inches below my knee.
Luckily, I found eggs and tomatoes in the fridge. I searched for sardine and found it. There was light so I decided to prepare toast bread with egg sauce. Jason came down when I was almost through. He waved a greeting and I waved back.
As soon as I had set the table,I went to the guest room to call dad. He moved there earlier in the week when he couldn't bear the memories his real bedroom brought. I knocked on the door and he asked me to come in. He was seated on the floor with his long legs stretched out in front of him.
"I made breakfast dad, I was wondering if you'd like to join us."
"Alright baby,I'll be down in a few minutes".
I turned to leave when I heard my name.
"Jamille, I'm glad you're as strong as this. I couldn't be more proud of you than I am now".
I nodded and walked out of the room.
Soon,he was downstairs with us.
"Jason, would you please pray over the food?"
Jason nodded and we joined our hands together.
Mummy taught us to pray over our food. She always emphasised on blessing the people that would eat the food after praying for the food itself. She made us call each person's name on the dining table. Over time, we got used to it.
Jason started the prayer "Lord we thank you for this meal before us,bless it for us. Bless Mille and I and dad and mu....."he trailed off. "In thy name we ask,Amen." He managed to complete.
Dad and I said our Amens.
We ate our meal in silence. When everyone was done,I packed the plates to the kitchen and washed them. I thought Dad and Jason would have retired to their bedrooms by the time I was through. I was shocked to step out of the kitchen to meet them still on the dining table.
"Come sit here baby" daddy said.
I obeyed. "We've not really talked since we lost the one that meant a lot to us" he swallowed before continuing. "I'll try my best to be both father and mother to you. Managing the company hasn't been easy. I know I travel a lot and you're a lot more used to your mum but things have changed. I'll cut down on the trips now. I'll try my best to be there for you two. You're all I have left now. No matter what happens, know I love you very much".
He turned to Jason and said "I won't hold you back if you want to let it all out, you're free. Same goes for you Jamille".
Neither Jason nor I had the courage to meet his gaze.
"Now if you'll excuse me,I need to find out some things from the gateman." He said and walked out with his characteristic long strides.
"Jason, let's go watch from the window" I dragged him up from the chair".
We watched silently as dad called the gateman from his lodge.
"Edet,I haven't had the time to ask you what really happened that night"
"Ok sir, abeg make I start by saying sorry for the thing wey happen for your wife. I know sey...." he was cut short by dad.
"Thanks for your condolence, please go straight to the point"
"Sir I been dey do normal waka for night o. Your pikin dem been don comot. As I just wan pass kitchen side,I see madam for net side. I greet am but she no answer. Light been dey inside kitchen so I see as her chest dey go up and dan. She dey breathe like person wey run finish. I knock door taya sey make I enter see wetin happen. Before I know wetin dey happen, she don fall down."
"Edet, so why didn't you call someone eh?" Daddy yelled with anger evident in his voice.
"Sir,I...."
It was at this moment everything that everything became clear to me. I remembered when Edet called me at the party.
I snapped out of my thoughts to continue watching the drama before me.
Dad had already seized him by the collar, lifting him from the floor.
"Nooooooo" I yelled from inside the house
